This week, Will's stolen Edwin's first ever Project Car, a modified Mazda MX-5 which has been sat abandoned since its turbo blew up 4 years ago. Edwin can have any parts he needs but he's got just 24 hours to get it running again and if he fails the challenge, he has to pay for all of it!

Help I'm confused. Why is the Miata have an "18 Valve" engine but for 18 valves spread across 4 cylinders it would 4.5 valves ;-;. Is there something I'm missing?? Or does it say 16 Valve but it looks like 18. Oh nvm it says 16...

In his defense, he even got short changed on the 24. He said the car needs a "day's work". Not a day's work including the parts overhead he knew he needed beforehand. He could've easily finished, had the clutch been provided for him in advance, as he knew he was going to need it.

Love the video! Can we have an extension to the 24 hours please? Would be good to see it running. In response to the comment that MX5s aren't good: I haven't driven an NA, NB or NC so I can't comment on those but I have owned a 2020 ND2 for 3.5 years and after 31,000 miles, 2 long European road holidays and 17 track days I can say that my MX5 is fantastic, especially when I compare it to the cost of other cars of the same age/mileage. Maybe an idea for a video would be to compare an early MX5 with other cars you could have bought for the same price from the same year as the MX5 when new.

As someone who lives in a desert, here are some tips to keep cool when you're working in a hot garage. Hydrate, you sweat to cool your body down, but it dehydrates the hell out of you super quick so keep yourself hydrated. I've got two insulated bottles filled with cool water whenever I'm in my garage in the summer. Open the garage door. Use whatever breeze you can to get heat out of the garage. Drape a wet tea towel on the intake side of a big box fan so that it pulls air through the towel cooling the air down. Fans normally don't cool you they just blow hot air off of you so you feel cool. Hydrate Cool your neck and hands and wrists. These are essentially your body's cooling vents because you've got a lot of blood flow closer to the skin. If you cool that down you can more efficiently cool down the rest of your body. You can do this by wrapping wet bandanas or evaporative cooling cloths around these parts of your body. For people with long hair like me, put your hair up. Having your hair down is kinda like blocking the cooling vent that is your neck. Hydrate.
@RosaFriend

Also 31°C sounds like a delightful day in a low humidity desert like mine, but in a more humid place like the UK that sounds dreadful.
@Blazi3
@Blazi3 3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately in the UK sweat doesn't cool you down much, it just makes you sticky and horrible adding to the uncomfortable feeling of being hot. It's too humid, even if the breeze feels cool your body struggles to maintain temperature making it feel hotter than it is. Edit: ah I see you addressed that in a reply to yourself already
@RosaFriend

@Blazi3 yeah that's why hydration is important because your body will sweat regardless of whether or not it's helping.

Besides sleeping in a unit, I can relate to most of this at some point working on cars, the fairy liquid lying in coolant, more stuff to do in barely any time. Needing parts we didn't have and all to get a car sorted in time or van and getting filthy somehow tho everyone else stayed clean doing the same jobs. Thi the reward for getting jobs done and seeing vehicles move without issues was the best thing. Vehicles are stressful but so rewarding you feel like you've earned things you have

Edwin, mate, props to you for doing this. You got so much done in that 24 hours and on a more comfortable day, I think you could've done it. Because that's your MX-5 and you love/hate it so much, I think getting it back to functioning condition would tell you what you want to do with it. Get the lads to help you, then go after him with his X5 on the coldest day of the year! The metal would've been a workable temperature for you here, but when its snowing outside? It'd be painful to work with. I don't care what anyone says, 31 is hot to work on a car full stop. Coming from an Australian! Hello. My name is Imbe, i am a hobby mechanic. I found a Honda Civic Fn1 2010 sitting around for... a price and i had to go trough the breaks and suspension.. i also had to do a radiator+AC component swap to it due them being... rot away and punctured.. well after i was done.. i had experienced multiple projects and scenarios where im in a time pich in a place where i must do "the thing" aka work with my car. When people put you in a hurry, you can bet my ass the face is exactly like this dude right here.. 24 hours is a short ass time to work on something.. we mechanics are put on torture and some how it is fun.. poor man, i know how you feel. My soul is with you. i did a break caliper rebuild + front + rear suspension rebuild in a weekend and this dude is dying here in 24h time pinch... my soul... my heart. (thanks for reading - Imbe)

I relate to this so much as someone with a turbo miata with a slipping clutch that I absolutely dread replacing again

Top work lads, I've got an Evo I bought that was my first turbo car 13 years ago. Everyone has told me to sell it over the years but it is still there. It has some periods of down time when things break (3years at one point) and it seems that when you fix one thing the next goes (waiting on a new twin plate clutch now) but like you I will never sell it. Good relatable content much better you guys are your own bosses now.

For all the non brits on here.....31 degrees in the uk is unbearable because of the 90% humidity involved due to the enormous amount of ground water on the island, from a British guy that hates living in Spain because its too bloody hot!
