Perhaps the larger sail gap is to accommodate vertical batons? Definately a multiple grease clean towel project. Well presented. Amel would do well to use this for their customers to watch.

I don't think that the original sails on the Amel Super Maramu had vertical batons. Thanks for the comment John!

Hi Aquarius ....very good plan how to maintain the furler,1 thing I would like to commend,the oilseal springs are almost always of steel zincplated,what I do is: take the original spring out of the new oil seal and replace it with a stainless steel spring which you get at a good bearing shop per meter,(I have always some meter on board ) you cut it to length and wind it together like the orig.one.I do this on all the oil seals .the biggest advantage you will find on the bow thruster oil seal ! My oilseals on this are watertight at least 10 years because the spring does not corrode.Of course you have to lubricate the shaft now and then. I invest a lot of work in my Super Maramu----,result is ,everything is working fine and you can depend on and that´s worth it. SV Gigue of Skipper Wolfgang Bitschnau Austria --Amel Super Maramu no.143
@SailingAquarius4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the good comment and the SS spring suggestion. When I buy the seals with springs, I try to find ones that have the Stainless Steel springs already. I believe the marine grade should have SS springs. But good idea to have some extra springs onboard, because you can't always find marine grade parts. Nice to hear that your Super Maramu is being maintained properly!! Ken

Love Tech Tuesday👍 I always grease the o-rings. Helps them seal and they won’t dry out and crack as early compared to installing them dry.

Ken, thank you so much for breaking the furling system down in a way I can understand. My wife and I are currently in the market to buy a Super Maramu. Before watching your video I was a little apprehensive with Amel’s reliance on gearboxes and in mast furler for sail handling systems. Now I feel much more comfortable and confident in maintaining these semi complex systems. Let me know if you know of any good condition 1999-2001 era Amels in the US.

Hello Kevin, It's not rocket science. Amel made boats that are easy to maintain, though it might look complicated at first glance, it's not. Hope you watched all four videos in the series, as each shows different control features of the main sail. When sailing Aquarius, if the apparent wind is over 20 kts I put the main away unless I am trying to point as high as possible. I try to deploy the main sparingly, and use the mizzen anytime there is good wind. The goal of cruising is not to get somewhere as fast as possible, it's to get to the destination quickly without breaking something. Not sure of any good boats out there right now for sale, but if I see a good one I will let you know. Best, and Fair Winds.. Ken

Sailing Aquarius Around The World , well the country make would put you off but Mexico , ours have 15 thousand miles with out a hiccup , they don’t have a halyard to hold the sail up the halyard returns to the deck , different but easy once fitted no spindal at the top to go wrong , good luck

@SailingAquarius4 жыл бұрын
No, but at 7:19 minutes I show the paperwork that came with the rebuild kit. Shows the measurements. If you have a specific part number I will try to locate it. Probably should have taken a photo of each bag that the seals came in!

@@SailingAquarius yeah.. all seals has parts numbers written on them.. makes it easier to source them. Also taking measurements of the different oring grooves does the same...

I am curious to know if the Covid-19 has hindered your mobility? Are there any restrictions to sailing from one point to another or finding suitable moorage?
@SailingAquarius4 жыл бұрын
Hello Philip, First Thailand put a ban on travel between Provinces. But a few days before the ban we moved from Krabi Province to Phuket Province. We thought there might be a travel ban, and we wanted to be anchored somewhere that's FREE, we can swim, fuel is available, and access to lots of stores. And, would be nice to be close to a few people that live in Thailand that we know. So we moved to Phuket and anchored at Ao Yon beach. We stayed there for about 2 weeks, then filled up our tanks with fuel at Chalong Pier, then dropped the hook close to Cloud 19 Panwa. And we are still there. We can still move to Ao Yon if we want, but not sure if we could go back to Chalong Pier to get more fuel because about a week ago travel between Districts in Phuket was made illegal. So, now we are stuck here, but yes we can move as long as we stay within the district.

@@SailingAquarius thanks for answering my question. I had a feeling that's probably what would be typical. It seemed easier to ask some of you that are out there traveling now. We had planned on leaving Portland Oregon in February 2021 on our way to Uruguay and have been trying to get a handle on whether or not that trip is going to be possible now. Thank you again for your input.
