Rebuilding Tractor Hydraulic Cylinders

Rebuilding the hydraulic cylinders for the front-end loader on my 1955 Ford 860 tractor. One of the cylinders was leaking pretty bad but they're old so I figured I might as well rebuild both of 'em. I've never rebuilt a hydraulic cylinder before and I was not expecting what I found but it still went pretty smooth. Years ago, I read an article somewhere about repairing pitting on motorcycle fork tubes by filling the pits with epoxy and then leveling and polishing with fine sandpaper. I realize it's not necessary on your single acting cylinders, but it may be a useful trick for a pitted double acting cylinder rod.

That makes sense, it would definitely smooth 'em out. Luckily for me, the rod bottoms out in the cylinder before the pitted portion starts.

What was the name of the rebuild kit? Looks just like mine. I have no idea what to order but after your video I'm gonna try it!

I wasn't able to get a kit. The seals are called "Fabric Reinforced Chevron V-Ring Packing" but I'm not sure about the size. I took the old packing seals and O-rings to my local hydraulic shop and they just sold me a handful of loose parts I needed for the repair. Hopefully that's enough to get you started, let me know how it goes.

Yeah, once I figured out which types of seals I needed, it was pretty easy and straight forward. Getting the rods back in the cylinders was the hardest part.

Would that be the same cylinder as the levelling cylinder on a Ford 2000?

I'm not sure, there were no identifying marks on the cylinders.

@@lewy1 It could have the same type of packing as mine but your local hydraulic shop should be able to tell you exactly what you'll need.

There aren't any numbers or letters printed anywhere on 'em, sorry.
