I did a very similar late 1960s Triumph step-thru skip-find restoration last year. That was the first rod braked bike I'd worked on so was a learning experience, but turned out great. These old bikes are built like tanks (and not Russian tanks ;-) ).

Yes, rod brakes are definitely a pain to set up compared to pretty much anything else. I’m glad that @Velocipedium did a series on how to set them up - on a Raleigh Dawn coincidentally! A previous owner has painted all the rod brake parts in black or silver paint, which I need to strip in order to take things apart and be able to adjust them properly. Hopefully I can polish up the metal like it was originally.

Very informative video. I have the exact same front hub as this on my 80s Superbe and the cones need replacing. Any idea where to find cones for this particular hub?
@RichsRidesandRestorations Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I get most of my spares online from SJS Cycles, who carry a lot of spares for Sturmey Archer and others. I’ve not ordered any cones from them before so it may be worth calling or emailing them to see if they know what is compatible. Another good source of information is the Raleigh Roadster and Superbe Owners Group on Facebook who are a treasure trove of information - and some members may have the parts you need!

My crank sprocket has 44 teeth, I noticed today. Was 48 the norm? Probably for the 3-speeds. My single gear in back is 18. Sure hope I can make the AW, I have, fit the rear drop outs. This bike is sure looking good.

Very nice video....is there an online catalog for rudge bikes made in 1952?.....the problem is that in my country there is very little data on bicycles made by Raleigh industries even though there are lots of bicycles here, many of which are bicycles made in the Netherlands from the colonial era

Thanks for watching and for the question. Is this Rudge catalogue from 1953 any good to you? www.icenicam.org.uk/library/Rudge_Whitworth/Bicycles_catalogue_1953.pdf

Thanks for the feedback. It’s definitely better than what it was, if you look at the first video in the playlist you can see its condition when I got it. I was aiming to preserve the patina and history of the bike, while also preserving it from rust.
