I really hope the "other guy wants to buy it" thing is real, as I am really fed up with all the fake videos on the internet these days. It was the reality of this show that made me watch it. If it is real then I agree with other comments, talk to the guy that wants to buy it and try and agree to rebuild it together on KZbin. It would make an awesome TV series to see this fly.

Throttle lever and mixture lever need to be forward. I’ve done this so many times at work looking for fuel leaks after component changes. The FCU won’t pass fuel to the fuel divider and injectors if they are not at full RPM and rich mixture position. If you don’t do this the electrical boost pump will run dry and it can damage. Also PB blaster no bueno in the fuel divider, no oil or degreaser should be in there, only fuel. As an A&P I love this series and even the misso is rooting for you to get it started. I hope you can get it done before the repo man turns up. Also an idea would be setting up a patreon or some fundraiser. I’m sure if a quarter of the people who viewed this donated, even just a dollar, you could pay the owner more than what’s he’s been offered, and leftover money can go towards parts. Good luck mate you’re closer than ya think

When you're "priming" the motor, you should see the fuel needle for flow move to the right showing a gph value. normally priming a injected engine is - booster fuel pump on -> mixture full rich -> wait till needle moves showing flow, count three seconds (this is the actual priming), then mixture off. For starting -(after successful prime) mixture off, pump on, crank till it fires, as soon as it fires mixture rich to keep it running, then lean it out (as needed) for taxi so as to prevent fouling plugs. Good luck. Edit: and after it fires set rpm, and watch oil pressure gauge. no oil pressure in 10-15 seconds, shut it down.

I worked on those engines quite a lot from my experience when they have not ran for a while you need to start them flooded especially since you're not 100% sure the fuel to air ratio is right here's how you should do it to get it started. First advance throttle to full power stop along with mixture to full rich position, then with the boost pump ON prime the engine until fuel starts coming out of the overflow on the ground and let it pour out for about 3 seconds. Turn the boost pump off then bring mixture to cut off that way it doesn't get any more fuel in the cylinders once you hit the starter. Leave throttle to max power then start cranking engine with the starter and mag switch ON if engine fires up, quickly bring mixture to full rich and back off throttle but not too much to keep it alive. That procedures floods the cylinders with gas and helps the rings to seal up since on those engines oil do most of the sealing on the rings. As far as oil pressure goes the gauge should start reading in a 30 seconds window if not then no oil pressure or the line is clogged up. It also needs to crank faster idealy to start it up but with the above procedure it should work. Don't abuse the starter, a max of 15 seconds should be enough or you'll burn it up. The turbo not spinning is not giving you any chances. Have someone with a fire extinguisher nearby, fuel on the ground might catch fire. Keep it mind it's got air, fuel and spark there's no reason why it would not start beside a starting procedure or an odd thing going on

Jason: Having reviewed all the comments, it seems to me they fall into one of three categories: 1. Those who know nothing of aircraft and aircraft engines offering dangerous and/or stupid advice, 2. Those who are supportive of your efforts but don't understand the Code of Federal regulations (14 CFR) that applies to aircraft certification/airworthiness and hence the economic unfeasibility of restoring this aircraft to flying status, and 3. Those who know aircraft values and are knowledgeable about this aircraft, it's systems, it's engines etc and are actually trying to offer helpful advice while totally understanding that there is not an economically feasible way to return this aircraft to flying status. If one makes this a labor of love and pours $300,000 into the aircraft it MIGHT fly. Whereupon it will be worth about $150,000 on the market (no-logbooks, AD compliance etc, even with newly overhauled engines and accessories makes this a money looser). That is the type of situation you are looking at. The fact that there are no logbooks automatically discounts the sales price by $40,000-$60,000. Engine overhauls will be $50,000 to $60,000 per side, accessories like turbos etc will be about $10,000 per side, prop overhauls will be about $6,000 per side if all is ok or up to $35,000 per side for new if required due to corrosion (a real possibility). Aircraft stuff isn't cheap and it is escalating every day (along with everything else). Prior A&P/IA comments are spot on for the most part. By the way, A & P = A for Airframe, P for Power plant, hence A & P. It is an FAA license for a holder of two licenses necessary to work on FAA certified aircraft, engine and airframe), whereas the IA license is an FAA Inspection Authorization. An IA is sort of a graduate degree in being an A&P with emphasis on inspecting and returning to service aircraft requiring FAA inspections, major modifications, or major repairs. Some thoughts: 1. Check the compression of the cylinders, even if the engine is cold you will get an idea if there is adequate compression, 2. Verify the ignition system type on this aircraft. Per the typer certificate data sheet (TCDS) for this engine it can have either an impulse coupled magneto or a retard breaker type of magneto that has a starting vibrator associated with the retard breaker. Look at the data tag on the magnetos and get the Part Number, cross reference the PN to readily available references online and you'll know which type of mags you have. I am virtually positive yours will have the "shower of sparks" system with the starting vibrator and retard breaker so you will need to verify that system is working. Merely having a spark isn't enough to start, it must be timed to fire at near top dead center on the compression stroke for this engine to start. That retardment in timing to near TDC for starting is accomplished by either impulse couplings in the mag or by the retard breaker combined with a starting vibrator that puts out a continuous high voltage spark to the spark plugs during the starting process. 3. The fuel appeared to be making it to the flow divider (aka fuel spider, fuel distributor), but not getting through it. There is a poppet valve in that unit as others have mentioned, and I agree, that it is probably not working/opening, hence no fuel flow thru the spider. Once you have fuel output from the spider flush the injector lines and also remove and clean the injectors. There is no "fuel rail" on these 1940s era technology engines. They are continuous fuel injected (i.e. the fuel flows into the intake manifold continuously throughout the 4 cycles of the cylinder). The "fuel flow" gauge in this aircraft is a pressure gauge NOT A FUEL FLOW gauge. You can have a completely blocked fuel system (such as you have) and the gauge will read high "flow" as it is showing the pressure being built. More modern systems actually have fuel flow transducers that truly show fuel flow. 4. The electric fuel pumps are for priming and emergency use if the engine driven fuel pump fails. There is a bypass valve in the engine driven pump that allows fuel to flow thru the pump when the electric fuel pump is on. The prime switch merely activates the electric pump while held at high speed, whereas it should be run in low speed at all other times (at least that is how it is if the aircraft is configured according to Cessna Multi Engine Bulletin MEB 88-3, which most are). 5. Starting procedure for these engines: Mags On, Mixture full rich, Throttle wide open, prime engine for 3-5 seconds or so (if you see fuel dripping out the bottom of the cowl you went just a bit too long, no big deal if it isn't a huge puddle), return throttle to cracked position, "clear prop", crank the engine while advancing the throttle (you are trying to achieve a stoichiometric mixture), as you advance the throttle the air/fuel mixture will reach a combustable mixture and if everything is correct it should start. Notes: I presume this aircraft is fitted with remote oil filters. Before attempting to start the engine remove the outlet hose from the oil pump that goes to the oil pump adapter. Verify there is oil in the pump outlet and the filter hose with oil, and if you changed the filter fill it with oil as well. These engines have been known to loose oil prime in the gear driven oil pump after sitting for long periods. You retrograde fill the oil pump by filling it thru the outlet fitting. Hope these few hints help, and good luck. GSilver FAA Wright Brothers Award Recipient, 54 year pilot, A & P/IA, Owner, Pilot, Mechanic on Cessna 421B for 27 years. Never turned wrenches on a 401 but virtually all twin Cessnas are similar. Big bore Continental engines are all very similar. I note that many comments from some were related to Lycoming engine start procedures and they are usually somewhat different from injected big bore Continentals.

Put the throttle and mixture full forward and use the switches labeled “prime”. If still no fuel there’s an issue with the diaphragm in the flow divider (the fuel manifold you took apart on top of the engine). Fuel flow is a measurement of pressure and not actual flow, it shouldn’t be getting that high, indicative of a blockage.
@alaric_
@alaric_ 2 жыл бұрын
The fuel flow from the mechanical pump to the flow divider seemed good. It was a good amount of fuel considering the small squirts the injectors spray. That's why there is return line (the very rusty one) opposite the red inflow line that he checked, any excess fuel gets returned back to tank. I have a strong feeling that the fuel is just not getting through the injectors via the flow divider.

If you would have had the common decency to hide the number and protect the owner's privacy, would that have happened? Or was that the whole point of making these videos? To advertise the plane, and get it running simply for the content, which now has a higher degree of drama? I foresee you getting it running, then you 'decide' that it is not worth the cost to fight a legal battle and the cost of restoring and storing the thing in the first place. Maybe the new owner will end up 'giving you a little something' for your work. But you will gain X-amount of subscribers, and sooner or later you will be able to buy a mint condition example. Welcome to youtube, people. Perhaps you are starting to learn the game.

Twice in my life I have had a similar offer, "you get it to run and and you can have it for x dollars" I fell for it the first time and put in the time, got it running and was told, "now that it runs the price is 10x". Lesson learned. Years later I was made a similar offer and I said "no, I will buy it broken and take the chance that it may not be fixable". After getting it started the fellow was furious with me that I had "stolen his truck". This generous offer that "it is yours if you get it to run" is usually code for "I am going to con you out of your time and cost of parts to fix my equipment". I think the tail number story is a guise to extort money for your own labor.

A&P here, I've not worked on a 401, but I've worked on a Cessna 340 and 414, which are very similar. For your fuel issue, my money is on the distributor itself being bad. I've seen the seals degrade and clog them up. Usually for me that means removing it and sending it to overhaul. You might try swapping the one from the other engine. If it is the seals in the spider degrading, make sure to clean out the injector lines and injectors. Hoppes No. 9 and/or MEK works for the injectors. GAMI injectors are tunes specifically to the cylinders, so keep track of which one went where. Some of them will have a number on one of the flats where the first number is the cylinder its meant for (6431 for cylinder #6). For the lines, isopropyl alcohol and shop air. Hope you get it running man!

Look dude, Your viewer’s watch your channel because of the quality of the content. In my opinion I dont care if your working on a dump truck that needs repaired and driven all night or an airplane thats been sitting for years. Sure the Cessna brings a certain amount of excitement because of its condition. But 20K for airplane that will need 50-60k in complete engine rebuilds, complete interior and the list goes on. Dont get blinded by the potential awesomeness that this aircraft represents because it will come at an awesome pricetag. If the person was willing to undercut you and offer money for the plane. So be it. Let that guy spend his money on it. If your viewer’s are absolutely drooling over the Cessna and you decide you must rebuild it. Then consider what Jimmy’s world is doing with his Save the 310. Sell stickers, hats shirts. Anything What Im trying to say is dont get emotionally attached to a basket case! It's pretty obvious it isn't financially worth it to rebuild it in it's own right, but based on the success of these videos, views and subscribers the income it's generating from the views might make it worth doing. Imagine the income stream from a series of videos that culminate in getting it flying again. And if the owner sells the plane to somebody, well he has still made money from the videos he has done. Initially I wondered what he wanted with the plane because it doesn't appear financially viable. Initially he said that it would never fly but later said that he wanted it to fly. Maybe the new owner already has a damaged one of these planes and wants to use this one for parts or wants to use his parts on this one. But I thought that the lack of records was another hurdle to fly. If it sells, I hope that the seller negotiates or provides at least 10% to Rebuild Rescue. Absolute minimum 5%, like it was a real estate commission for finding a buyer.

Honestly don't know anything about these planes, so I'm just guessing here. He took the line off what looked like a fuel line regulator/manifold and it had fuel flowing out of it, but yet no fuel going directly into the injector lines. It appears to me, the fuel going into that regulator doesn't have enough pressure to override spring pressure in the regulator, therefore not getting to the injectors. I could of sworn I seen a spring in there when he took that regulator cover off? If it is a regulator it appears mechanical, therefore should have a spring in it that actually regulates the fuel pressure.

Hey bro I love watching this shit because I’m a former mechanic, used to work for the FAA and would love to do what you’re trying to do right now as I’m retired have an excess of free time. Suggestions follow! 1. I feel that you should have cleared the lines going down to that lower screen that you pulled out at about 28 minutes into the video because you are going through a process of elimination and checking the screen was only the first part of a complete diagnosis as for that part of the fuel system. Please blow it out in both direction (coming in and going out). 2. Blowing out this lines and components, you know you really should be wearing eye protection! 3. When you climb into the cockpit you are disturbing all of the dusty bird poop and breathing it in. That nasty stuff often carries viruses that are dormant until they reach the moist interior of your sinuses and of course lungs, Where they will be nice and warm and start to reproduce. Enough said. 3. WHO is trying to “steal” your project plane? I thought you had an agreement! Find out who he is and expose him. Then get one engine running (both if required by the agreement. Figure out your budget to restore the bird then consider a price you’d sell it to the interloper for. You need to get paid for your expenses time and effort. Where is this? If you were within an hour of driving time I’d come and help you myself. I’m in Portland Maine where the weather is much different from what you have there so I won’t get my hopes up. Best of luck in any case!

I was kinda hoping that there was an A&P "behind the scenes" to help guide this rebuild along but I'm afraid that there isn't. Is it even possible to insure this aircraft without log books unless you zero-time everything especially the engines? Add to that the AD is hanging over your head. I like your chutzpah but this kind of rebuild is the kind that can break you down hard

Working on this old and broken down stuff can really break folks down hard…. Normally you come across Multiple failures across many systems. It can and will be maddening. I love it. It’s like a constant puzzle that when finished will be so satisfying. Just to give you a little piece of mind…. I’ve started many mechanically injected airplane engines. While working with this one I’ve followed standard and non standard starting procedures. It’s not as simple as moving a lever this way or that way. It has many major system failures internally and externally. We’ll get one of the engines started to seal the deal and then both eventually. It’ll take a number of new parts and a lot of hours of hard work 💪🏼 Thank you for watching Tom 👍🏼

@@rebuildrescue You can not even legally work on this airplane unless under the direct supervision of an AP/IA. With no log books or airworthiness certificate you may also need an inspection by an FAA DE (designated examiner) The engines and props can only be rebuilt by a licensed A&P/IA or a Part 135 FAA repair shop. With out log books you will be requuiered to rebuild them to prove engine time and airworthiness. Getting them started may be all fun and games but it will never fly without hundreds of thousands of dollars and man hours it is not worth it. I can appreciate the challenge of getting something running good luck.

The manifold valve also known as a flow divider acts as a secondary shut off. There is a plunger on the gasket in the flow divider and when there is low fuel pressure the plunger goes down and keeps fuel from dumping in the cylinders after shut down. When there is enough fuel pressure the plunger opens and allows fuel to flow. If you have fuel to the manifold valve but not out the lines the plunger on the diaphragm is stuck!

Continental engines are not quick to start. Especially cold. I've started them thousands of times in my career as an aircraft mechanic. You need to prime them heavy, then crank the engine, while slowly moving the throttle lever from idle to full to closed and back Combustion only happens when the air, fuel ratio is right, and moving the throttle lever slowly, changes the ratio until you hit the correct ratio.

Fuel injection is high pressure low volume. You won’t see much coming out of an open line. When closed it will spray through the injector enough for that cylinder cycle. It’s not much. Install injectors and test for atomization of the fuel at the injector nozzles. All air must be pumped out of the system before this will work.

I'll throw in my two cents as an automobile mechanic. Prolly got a couple of buckets of advice pennies by now, but, I would use staring fluid to get it going. I know you don't want to use that but that'll get oil flowing, fuel pressure up, and help loosen the rings (which, btw, I'd put some engine oil in the cylinders to aid in sealing). After that, it may start on its own without assistance.

The first thing I'd do was go around the rounded, seized, cross-head screws and soak them, hit them with a hammer, whatever it took to get them off and replace them with stainless steel, hex key (don't round) screws with copper eaze. Prior to working on the plane, you should have had the seller sign the bill of sale form off the FAA website and mailed it into the Oklahoma office. As long you have that, the registration will go under you and it doesn't matter what other "deals" the owner can come up with. I've had to go through a lot to get my FAA paperwork straight and also other planes that I gave away too so I would start there to protect yourself. Also, it takes MONTHS for it to go through. One plane that I currently own took 6 months because of the government shutdown.

I can't see the owner going for that, because the entire deal is he only gets it if he gets it running. Why the owner sign it over when he could just then scrap it? And it doesn't matter about 'protecting' himself, he is already making bank from the video views. If the owner sells it to somebody else instead...well it's a bummer because he can't continue making more videos and therefore more income, but he has still profited from the videos he has done.
