When I was in the N.S.W Rural fire service we had to learn a number of knots. The bowline was one of them, but we had to learn how to tie it around ourselves one handed. The hypothetical scenario being than you had slipped down an embankment or small cliff and needed to secure yourself from falling any further by hanging on to something, leaving only one hand free to tie the knot.

*Great video!* *The bowline knot is an ultra-important knot that every outdoors person should be able to tie with both hands, from any direction, around anything or anyone, and regardless of whether they can easily see or if it is pitch black outside. The bowline knot is super important for mariners and climbers alike.* *It was the first knot taught to me when I learned how to rock climb in the military back in 1977.* *Followed in quick succession by the.......* *Double Overhand Stopper knot* *Double Fisherman's knot* *Figure 8 Bend knot* *Directional Figure 8 knot* *Figure 8 Directional Loop knot* *Prussik knot* *Sheepshank knot* *There's probably a couple of other knots that I am forgetting, but I last climbed with a braided climbing rope for security, almost 43 years ago.*

EXCELLENT! The simplest, clearest, & easiest demonstration Ive ever seen! And that dates back to my Scouting days in the early 1950s! Thanks, Corporal! You are the GENERAL of Bushcrafting!

Right on! I learned the first way as make an overhand loop (looks like a six) on the standing end, then with the short end "the rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree then back down the hole". Pull the loop and working end to tighten. The bowline around the tree demonstration is the best one I have seen for that version. Very clear. I love your knot and rope videos.

Grandfather was a Navy officer, few ropes and an old knot/splice book was his idea of keeping the kids busy while babysitting, long before internet. To this day I stll hear, after days of trying .... correct, excellent, now close your eyes and do it again. Perfect, well done, now do it behind your back ..... and yep, my own boy now can tie a bowline. Great vid as always . C.

Corporal K: The bowline was hard for me to "see" during my BSA years, but always advertised as "easy." As a L-handed student standing in front of my R-handed instructor I always saw the step-by-step process upside down and backwards. With only occasional successes I didn't master control of the three lines in the final tensioning process (the working line, loop, AND the free end). It confounded me for all those years. Years later a tug boat deckhand demoed the "inline twist, flip, tuck, thread, pinch, and work (pull) method" during a Red Cross sailing class. That day it all clicked and the bowline became my go-to knot. I use it everywhere as a slip-loop (lariat knot), as a non-slip loop (safety hoist), or as a connecting/attaching knot for radio antennas and heaving-line throw bags. The bowline is a great teaching knot that helps kids achieve mastery of a mysterious thing. Mastery of the bowline mystery can lead to mastering other difficult things like woodland survival, abstract math, musical instruments, relationships, and life in general. Thanks for all you're doing Sean, you're making a difference. I introduce you, "the amazing, humble, and motivated, Corporal Kelly" and your channel to all my students. I appreciate EVERY video, even stern/tired Sean. Grown up life is certainly not a bed of roses, my friend. ...until next time.

There’s an old adage they teach us in rigging school so that we remember how to tie the bowline correctly! It goes like this “ the rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree and then goes back down the hole!! And that’s how you remember to tie a bowline knot !!

there is a mariners version where you wrap it around you arm and do it one handed. I never learned it, but fire chief loved showing off he could. basically so you can tie around yourself if you are in the water after falling overboard.
