Most of Florida - a unique ecosystem in the country - should have been left as national park. Pollutants and sewage will run from the flooded vehicles and homes into the ocean, killing more animals and seagrass. "Coastal wetlands act as nature's giant sponges, absorbing floods and wave energy from storms, improving property protection by up to 20 percent. One acre of wetlands can store as much as 1.5 million gallons of floodwater." Meanwhile these folks who could care less are driving up insurance costs for everyone else - building in canyons full of brush, in wetlands, on barrier islands. All these bloated homes with no natural environment left. And they'll just build right back, the same way, and expect Federal tax dollars to do it.

I blame this on local county governments they let developers build where they should have never built in low-lying land.... And they have overdeveloped Florida.... Floods happen in land locked states as well. This storm was a rain maker they happen, these local government needs to stop allowing so much building because it causes problems like flood plains. There needs to be a complete stop to new construction in Florida in most places. Cape Coral, Florida is being so over built right now because the Cape Coral city commissioners do not care and all they see are additional tax dollars they can spend. @@Jacksonzole57 I don't know if that was a new neighborhood or not, but every time they build new communities it can change the flood plain. I would bet that was and older community and the flood plain was altered by newer communities in the area. The ground can only soak up so much water and when you build huge communities on the land it decreases the amount of land capable of soaking up water. The water then runs off and it has to go some place. Sarasota is about 10 hour north of where I live in Cape Coral.

That's not what was said. They don't have flood insurance because they were not in a flood zone. I'm sure they have home insurance, including hurricane insurance. The home insurance policy for that lovely house is probably upward of $4700 a year.

I’m sorry, but the hurricane that demolished Fort Meyers two years ago, even took the houses. The people who lived were grateful to be alive. These people act like they didn’t know there was a tropical storm set to make landfall. I always move my car, take the important papers and favorite things in my car on high ground, and put my furniture and belongings as high up as I can get them…and pray. Always take your jewelry and photo albums. You always expect the worst but pray for the best. Floods can happen anywhere, your old hoses in your house might go, and you come home to water pouring out the door with 2 feet inside. These people behave like it’s supposed to happen to anybody but them!

As much as I feel real bad for these people, This should be another wake up call to everyone, That we all need to make the best choices in our lives in order to protect our property and families. We hear two many times that this type of damage has never happened here and I have been here for all my life. Humanity needs to make informed intelligent choices in life (And that means taking into account all worse case possibilities for the area your want you live and then deciding if it is right for you)

@@sandblast5636 blame Republican developers for building all those properties in the flood zone, and lieing, and paying off county commissioners , and engineers to say it's safe to build there. The insurance agencies took such a loss they started to classify new flood zones. Too late now for the people that already own.🤔
