Far Breton, a French Custard Prune Cake that's traditional in the region of Brittany.

It’s similar to a flan or clafoutis and very popular in that part of France. It’s a classic dessert that’s great served warm with coffee or tea. It’s quite dense with a flan like texture. The rum is optional but I highly recommend it. It’s simple to make, so enjoy Far Breton today.

I made this today, it was super easy. mixed reviews from the family..... my husband thought it needed more sugar, my middle son thought it was good the way it was, and my youngest son ate four pieces and said it was absolutely fantastic. The custard is not sweet but the prunes are very sweet so it is an interesting combination. I used two tablespoons brandy instead of rum as only had Captain Morgan, which I didn't think would work in the recipe.

made this the other day as it reminded me a little of a cake we purchased from the bordeaux region when we were on holiday there...although replaced prunes with dry apricots soaked in rum, it turned out okay...only lasted two days thou....as to many people snacking on it :)

Can you skip the rum? Or any alternative to the alcohol? Update: okay now that I read the recipe, you say we can skip it. But in general, what would be a good alternative to alcohol? (I don’t do alcohol) Btw I love your work (aka art), love the recipes themselves but then you have added so many layers - the photography, sound, editing, music, and just the feel of the video is so relaxing and inspires one to actually try this out. Alternatively, it’s nice to just watch the video. I can tell that you have put a lot of thought into how you make these videos and even your website and recipes (with two systems of measurement) are presented well. This whole endeavor feels like you have put your heart into it and it has integrity. Lots of thanks for sharing your talent and sharing these recipes. Keep up the great work!!
