Right between my emo phase and my artistic phase I was in somewhat of a skater/Avril Lavigne phase where I had the black pants with all the pockets and the borderline fancy style tee shirt that was super tight with the tiny sleeves. And I would have killed to have Perks of being a wallflower in my life during that time. And then my preppier phase where I was all about Aeropostale and doing cute art projects and listening to music with my hair so flat ironed down you could see the exact shape of my skull under it I would have absolutely killed for to all the boys I loved before. But alas, I did not have them, instead around those times I was only just starting to read heavily and was in love with Percy Jackson

God damn it. I'm trying to take a break from booktube, but this is a such a fantastic video idea that I can't resist! I hope everyone turns this into a tag. I'd love to see how people's teenage bookish phases differed/related to one another. One my favorite things about this video is that you acknowledge the problematic aspects of a book like @ 3:00-3:40, but still admit that your teenage self would have loved it. There's a lot of tropes I enjoyed as a teen that I CANT STAND now

Hello Emma ♥ I loved this video, what a great idea! For me Again, But Better is just like Christine said "I wanted someone I could relate on my early 20's" And I relate so much with Shane 'cuz I'm just starting college, and I'm the oldest in the class, and I'm not good on making friends anymore, so Shane is a light trough the darkness hahaha!! ♥ I've been trough a lot of phases in my life, but my one big phase, that still is with me is my kpop phase. Have you ever read “Go Ask Alice”? I ran away from homeat 13. When the cop caught me they put me in cuffs n saw that I had cutts on my wrists. Instead of taking me to the station as they said, they took me to a mental institution where I was held for about a month. One of my Counselors gave me the book and it made me feel like I wasn’t alone it made a big difference.

When is was in high school (closer to grade nine and ten rather than later on) I had a HUGE paranormal phase. Books, movies, even songs that touched on the topics or werewolves or ghosts or vampires was just my cup of tea. My phase was so bad that basically would turn away from anything that wasn't paranormal or close to it. I think the book I'd recommend for that phase is The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong. Not only did it kickstart my love for anything paranormal but it's overall just a read that fits in so well with spooky October/late Fall reads.

In my teens I started exploring living a life without religion. It was the beginning of my acceptance of being an atheist. I would recommend the book "The poisonwood bible" by Barbara Kingsolver to my younger self. I read it a few years later as one of my required college readings and it was one of those books where I had the thought while reading "wow, I wish I would have read this sooner". It is about a missionary family sent down to the Congo. Unfortunately this was a time of great unrest and war in the Congo and they find themselves trapped there with minimal provisions. The father is devout and tries relentlessly to convert the tribe to his beliefs, while the mother and her daughters slowly adopt a more Congolese way of living. This book was a real eye opener. I feel like living in the US we are conditioned to think "well why don't they just do it like this" when hearing about the hardships developing countries face. One great example from the book was when the father went to plant all the different seeds he had brought over from the US. One of the village women who worked for them (cooking, cleaning, etc...) told him he was doing it wrong and to do it like "this". He dismissed her and took it as an insult to his manhood and to God. Later it rains and the beds where the seeds were planted were washed away. He knows they would have been saved had he done it the way the woman told him to but he is too proud to admit it. The gradual departure from religion the wife and children went through (and the difficulty of that transition) was something I resonated with and would love to have explored earlier. P.s. this book is phenomenal as an audiobook!

Becoming obsessed with every new hobby I discover? That’s definitely not me... or is it? Stop calling me out Emma! My only problem is that either the obsession doesn’t stop or the hobby remains anyways as my 5 year long England obsession shows (yup I totally felt your description of it that’s literally me with less union jacks and more posters of British celebrities). But hey technically I still qualify as a teenager... there is still hope. Anyways thank you for your great recommendations as a dancer I always struggle to find books about dancing so I’ll have to check out ‘Tiny Pretty Things’ and who knows I might come around to finally pick up ‘This Song Will Save Your Life’. I really loved the video (you can probably tell by my long comment) and the creativity behind it (:

(This was kinda difficult to decide on bc I’m only 16 and I don’t really feel like roasting my current self sooo) Anyway, I feel like the only book that would sum up my phases perfectly would be Fangirl. For starters, I’d venture to say it’s the main reason I’m a big reader now- me four years ago devoured that book and wanted to keep reading more and more after I finished it. Secondly, if you look at my lovely profile name you can see that I, myself, am very much so a fangirl and have been since I started middle school (which again was right around the time that I read Fangirl)
