Yes! A 72-hour mission requires at least 7,200 calories...potentially more for cold weather ops. I saw too many videos ignore basic caloric need, carrying just 2,400 - 3,600 calories. Damn. We need energy as Warriors, folks. Note: Brent is carrying 7 quarts of water for a long-range recon mission. Also...correct, we don't leave trash behind! No, it's not because we're "environmentally responsible" - although that attitude has merit. Instead, we don't leave trash because it tells the enemy far too much information about our patrol - location, activity, size, disposition, discipline, etc. Last point. Notice that Brent used his quick-release tabs to drop his ruck at the end of the video (34:06). He demonstrates this feature for a specific reason. WE DON'T FIGHT IN OUR RUCKS! Yes, we escape with a rucksack, of course. That's our sustainment gear. However, if we have to go toe-to-toe with an enemy before we can escape, then we drop our rucks - IMMEDIATELY. Quick-release.

Back in 2010 my unit was part of Cold Response in Norway we worked with Royal Marines and Norwegian commandos.... If you're worried about canteens freezing, turn them upside down in the carrier. The reason is... water freezes top down so if you carry the canteens normal the water will freeze at the spout. Turn them upside down and they'll at the bottom and you can still drink from it. Same goes if you're using Nalgene bottle instead of canteens.

Brent, I spent 32 years in the Army. I'd like to think I know something about military gear, how it works, and why it works. As you know, there are a lot of people who purport to know OCIE. But of them all, you are just about the only guy who says things that match my experiences. Guys, From boots to pouches to Load Bearing Equipment Brent is the real deal. Take note of his matter of fact delivery and complete explanations why it should be done his way, or some reasonable facsimile thereof. Note that where most are talking product placement and various systems, he is talking about weather and environmental risk factors and ways to mitigate them. That is how you know he is the real deal and has actually done this before. AAA+ (One quibble...if you ruck your camelback in cold weather, it can be your hot water bottle at night. Pay attention to where you put it to absorb heat while walking, and where (next to skin) for keeping warm. You have to be deliberate about what you're doing and why!!!)

I’m 68 but not out of the fight yet. That being said I’m not a young stud who can carry the same load when I was younger. I’ve been out in the woods and mountains most of my life. If I may I’d like to share some things l learned along the way. Down to 32F bring more warmer and lighter layers to wear to keep you warm either during the day or night, and a small summer bag or ranger roll. Be clothes heavy verses bag heavy. I use a SOL mylar double sized blanket which is quiet, low cost, pinned to a poncho liner and mated to a poncho as my ranger roll. A poncho liner alone isn’t enough below 60F. Buy two SOL double sized thermal blankets and two nylon ponchos . One for rain and thermal reduction of your hide and the other for your roll. wiggys poncho liner will work if wet. You won’t be in the bag for that long but you will be stationary long enough to welcome the extra layers you brought to wear until the sun shines. I use a collapsible 16 oz and quart size water bladders to carry clean water and only one canteen/ cup/ natick stove. And a 3 cup thermos. Hot liquid at 3 or 4 am is liquid gold. I use a tough disposable water bottle or drink from a 7-11 or Walmart which is easier to fill and to use with the Sawyer filter to fill my collapsible bladders. Bladders are easier to insulate and to fold up to free up space in your pack or rig. Keep your Sawyer water filter inside your jacket so it doesn’t freeze at night. I find a small day pack to carry water more comfortable, as well as rations, rain gear, extra ammo etc. I use a side by side 556 pouch for quick access, and two or three saw pouches and Alice pouches on my belt for most of my mission gear. They are multipurpose to plus up or down rather than using a buttpack. A buttpack with a shoulder strap can be carried if you are a medic or carrying extra personal or squad ammo, etc. My rifle stock is attached to either my right shoulder of my chest rig or Alice Pack strap, with 1 inch buckle. The less on my neck the better. The small day pack should not be stuffed. It should only carry what you need to fight or patrol or to collect pickup resources, and it can live under the top flap of an Alice pack when not needed. Tritium or red dot sight is very good for night fighting if you don’t have night vision. The lower you are to the ground the easier it is to see movement of individuals. A 36 yard zero is better than a 50 yard zero. Only 3.5 to 4 inch elevation at 200 yards. The Alice Pack is used as logistical support which sits great on top of your rear Saw pouches on the belt to support it’s load. My ifak is on my belt. I carry only 2 mags on my chest rig, third pouch for radio or extra mag. Low profile better for prone position and if ambushed. Been toying with the idea of a 40 rd magpul first contact mag if in a team. Right now running 20 rd for recce in my gun for quick response. Planning on not been seen or showing up where I would be expected to pop up. Just saying.

This video is really helpful when teaching people what is important to pack and why you pack it. Especially in cold/wet weather, the circumstances are different so considerations about food-water-shelter aren’t just things you skip over. I see a lot of gear layouts that miss this important aspect as well as specific mission critical gear; in this case observational equipment.

A good option I found, especially if you have a lot of ALICE pouches lying around, is to use the shoulder harness off of an LBV88, the front tightening straps from a standard ALICE y-harness (or, in my case, the straps from an M1967 h-harness), and a standard ALICE belt, and you wind up with something very similar, albeit slightly antiquated.

Former Canadian Army, when we did winter warfare training and had water bottles for example, to keep them from freezing just put a little vodka in, and the nco wont notice and the water wont freeze. I should also clarify, only a little way less then a shot. That being said, looks like a lot of fun, wish I had the free time to come out.

Couple tricks we use in cold climate for and camel backs. One Use a hot hands warmer near the bladder to keep it from getting too cold. Second, tape your tube under the shoulder strap to use body to keep warm. Third is if you can , place the bladder under your outer layer to again use body temp. We get to 20 to 30 below zero and have no issues.

Those m1950 scissor suspenders are THE BEST. I wear them to support my modern 2 piece belt system ( ferro bison ) . One of the metal hooks ended up breaking and sew I replaced them with sections of one wrap sewn to the suspenders. It’s even better now! It connects on either side of the belt where the most of the weight sits , and now with the one wrap attachments wrapped around each side of the belt it keeps all the hook and loop on the back for better grip against the inner belt.

This is a very good loadout. No nonsense. Practical and near identical to what's used in theatre. A couple things I would add would be 3 sandbags for both hiding/reusing any dug-up dirt and as something to rest weapons or equipment (keeping them out of the dirt). Also, in case the mission gets extended, and water becomes an issue (hydrate or die) a lifestraw. It's good for thousands of gallons of water, small and lightweight. Just wrap the bright blue tube with some 100-MPH tape to keep it low profile.

alright, let's judge your layout. 1. love the RAT boots. i wear them every day. even to work. 2. woodland is still the standard all camos are judged by IMHO. all those who bark about black not being found in nature can KMA. 3. you had me at wooly pully. automatic win. 4. i do question the belt. looks like a riggers belt, which in this case the weight seems superfluous. those things are heavy. standard Marine belt would work fine. all in all your clothing layout was outstanding. no waste. 5. the eagle industries h harness is a close brother to my beloved defensor fortis system. good choice! 6. i like that you have important items on your body in the event you have to di di mau. i would like to see a small E&E kit in one of those pockets. (firemaking, lightmaking, cordage, small multitool, etc.) 7. and my big pet peeve...you didnt weigh your gear. i know that wasnt a requirement of the contest but is a big deal to me. all in all a great entry. i would go on this mission with you anytime.

Would go down range with you anytime as well brother! So here's my thing about my weighing gear, I know to some people that this is a big thing, if it is, great. Me though, in my time in the grunts its been "here is what is needed for the mission, suck it the fuck up and big kick left!". ha I've lived by that my whole career. I've never weighed my shit before a field op. I cut excess where possible, but I've never had a set number poundage that I live by. I can say that wearing all my gear for the 360 it felt good and no different then what I'm used to stepping off for a 3 day FTX at One Shepherd. I'm not the epidemy of male physique but I maintain a 1st class Marine Corps PFT and never skip leg day in the Gym. I've never fell out of a hump and have always carried everything that was prescribed by the mission and then some in cases. @@Brent0331 i cant argue with a thing you say there. but it seems written from the position that both of us have always had in our Marine Corps career. we were always told what we had to carry for the mission...and of course mission always comes first. but i cant count how many times that the required equipment list was overdone and padded and included unnecessary items. despite his failings, S.L.A. Great video totally agree LBE is a great option for mission sets like this chest rigs just really don't cut it. Not enough gear and really require you having the 3 day or assault pack with you and working out of it. Good LBE like this or I personally have the Russian SMERSH which is nearly identical allows you to carry more gear comfortably on your person in the event you need to ditch the bag. Makes alot of sense especially when you look at how even in early gwot the SAS are still running old LBE on their LRRP missions in the deserts of Iraq.

I use the same gaiters. Some times the zipper pull hits on the zipper while you walk and makes unwanted noise. I found that once the gaiters are zipped up, running the tag ends of the draw strings down through the the hole in the zipper pull eliminates any noise.
@mrminiguns
@mrminiguns Жыл бұрын
Pure personal preference, but I run the TQ pouch on the shoulder strap upside down. A downward pull is easier on the shoulder and more ambidextrous. Only real downside is the increased chance of the flap coming undone when you're low crawling, but it should be high up enough to remain largely out of the dirt. Your mileage may vary.

What worries me is how the individual personal load carried by the soldier has doubled since the 1970s. The old idea if you were cold , just put your NBC suit on , which was always carried twenty years ago due to the threat. Problem was partly experienced in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, when the bad guys carried little kit. A good discussion on multi purpose kit, and living off the land might be worthwhile.
@Brent0331
@Brent0331 Жыл бұрын
Gear/kit has definitely increased over the years, I have the same worries. However, generally speaking, its for the better. The individual infantryman of the 70s wasn't equipped with the same kind of night fighting capabilities as the modern infantryman ( ADD + NVG, PEQ, strobes, Night vision IFF, etc.). Navigation equipment, comms, visual detection equipment, etc., all either are new to the individual Infantryman of the 1970s or significantly improved over a 70s era equipment. I have the same concerns though don't get me wrong, but over all the advances in Infantry kit over the last 40-50 years far increase the lethality over the enemy. Living off the land is an important conversation and the Commandant of the Marine Corps himself has discussed this very thing with Marines having to live off the land in a fight against a peer adversary (cough.. cough.. China) due to resupply chains being challenged.

Who goes out without water or trusts their only water to a bladder? Only someone who’ll be back inside the wire at the end of the day or has access to immediate resupply. Those people should not be the example.

An idea for your pioneering tools. Found an old antenna gear bag for the old PRC-77 radio. It has ALICE clips, but, you can use PALS straps for MOLLIE gear. I use this bag as a place to hold a folding saw, pick axe, pruning snips and such. Stays on the outside of my ALICE ruck. Otherwise, it always finds itself at the bottom of the ruck.

Regarding Camelback-style bladder systems. If you fill the bladder with fluid, close the cap, then do this one thing. Upend the bladder and bleed the air out of the bladder via the hose. Yes, suck the collected air via the hose. Pretty sure KZbin is going to have a great time with this statement. Once the air is out, stow the bag. This little action keeps the "sloshing" in the Camelback to a minimum.
