Old School Cool.. when I was 18, somewhere around 1974, I worked for an auto supply called Pat-Ray.. Pat was the machinist.. His son Renny was his helper, they backed the blocks and heads and shaved them down, all through machines that looked very much like these do.. I used to love to watch them.. I learned how to rebuild brake calipers and Engine heads from them, some years later I rebuilt an 82 Chevy 305.. I used much of that knowledge to do so.. To me, this is super coolness..

People like you are sadly a dying breed. I would give anything to be a young kid back in the 60s or 70s and be able to walk into any machine shop, car mechanics or carpenters shop with absolutely zero experience but the strong desire to learn a trade and say to them that i wanted to learn a trade that would hopefully teach me some skills that would eventually lead to a life long job.

During 60s and early 70s I used to work in a bike shop and a old guy used to do the same on old BSA when they throw rod trough case and barrel; we used to put barrel inside a steel box lined with refractory material heat it and he weld with oxy/ acetylene , after cooling down inside a sore of white cement , than machined it ! I did not believe , but did work incredible ! I have to say for those guys ! Bravo !,!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Now I live in a country where the mechanics in general don’t know that and is a throw away society !👏👏👏👏👏

@a4000t
@a4000t 2 жыл бұрын
Well its just welding with nickel,a standard procedure on cast iron,the block must be quite hot for it to take,and the white powder is flux which gives a cleaning action to the metals as they weld as well as helping it flow and adhere to the cast iron. then it must be cooled slowly as not to stress crack.

The welding here was the way I was taught in 1976. I have never done on a job though as anything cast that is broke is simply thrown away (or brazed). The welding rod I used to play with was also a piece of cast iron (obviously poured) about a 1/4 inch square and 18 inches long (maybe), you always want to match the rod or filler with the base metal as much as possible (they do this on atomic subs I have read, the exact same steel from the same batch). I have seen several electric nickel attempts here and there and they all appeared to have cracks at the edges. Although I suspect Ford filled cast defects with it, as I found these on my 1949; however, I suspect the defects were welded when the castings were still red hot because the metal does not quite match the base but they are great welds. I am old now, but I think the gas welding is the best here but time consuming, I always enjoyed gas welding the most. I suppose there are new rods now for ease, I don't know.

Except for all the people who perform similar work in every other country on Earth. As for by 18, there's a growing issue with kids not having basic mechanical skills. But that is also with every country on Earth. Knowing how to use your mobile phone does not make you tech savvy...just as being able to fry an egg doesn't make you a chef. But for some reason, ability to use a computer based appliance makes you tech smart. In reality, knowing how to use basic tools like screw drivers, hammers, saws, wrenches, and pliers is life changing and frees you from dependence on others for basic repairs and provide a solid foundation upon which to build greater skills.

Really interesting video. The slow heating of the block with charcoal is a more basic version of the process a company in South London (Angell & Williams) carried out to weld a rare old car block for me in the 70s. They used an enclosed furnace for the pre heat and cool down, but the welding process with Oxy Acetylene and cast Iron filler rod was identical. Can't see from the video any reason why that repair would be likely to fail. The block looks like it is a Diesel for agriculture or such -maybe Kubota manufacture- these motors aren't highly stressed, but will probably have a hard working life in a third world country.

Minus the shipping costs to wherever this is looks like you'd save a fortune on having an engine rebuilt. It does make us look bad when most of us throw something away if it's broken yet over there they make do and work their arses off. If the engine goes on my car and it could be fixed i'd have it rebuilt. Sod the cost.

I absolutely love your videos! I understand most of the repairs and I'm amazed at your technique. This one has me puzzled though. The original drilling of the holes and I figured out the sand technique had and still has me questioning. Would it be possible to maybe add captions every so often on what was initially the problem and purpose of the steps? I have seen most of your videos and this is one that I could use help with. If I just need to ask the audience I will. Thank you and please keep them coming!

If you mean why the holes were drilled and what the sand and following welding wasa bout, I suspect teh block had cracked at these spots. The common procedure is then to bore out the crack, so that it cannot grow further, and then when it's cast iron (I suppose that's teh case here), there are two ways: either Nickelbase and low or no preheat, or cast iron filler and high preheat (~650 °C). Cast iron is very susceptible to cracking without proper technique, so that's probably why teh block was stuffed with sand and stone - so that the coal stays where it's needed.
@philipdixon
@philipdixon 2 жыл бұрын
The head studs most likely pulled. First they drill out the old, you need to heat the cast iron before welding which they do. Then the head is Lumsden ground flat and the holes redrilled & tapped. It is then returned and the cylinders bored and honed.

You have the option buying a new, used, or professionally rebuilt engine. Pakistan: "AH YES WE GET SLAVES TO PUT ENGINE BLOCK IN FIRE PIT THAT WILL BE 20 RUPEES FOR THE 5 MEN WHO DIED "REBUILDING" THIS ENGINE"

There’s enough people in Pakistan who need jobs.A few too many I’m afraid.This was an amazing job and saved an engine block from scrap.Labour isn’t as expensive as other countries.So why not?Hundreds of thousands of engines are rebuilt in Pakistan in an ongoing basis.A friend of mine has a rebuild shop in fact.They do amazing work

There are no measurements taken during any part of the milling process. The reason is simple...the tolerances necessary to get the engine running are so broad that it can run on good thoughts. It will get very poor fuel economy, spew massive quantities of fumes, and leak oil. But who cares. No one. As a side point, just two months ago Pakistan issued a new law aimed at requiring all vehicles to be fully registered. Why? Easy. There are about 3 times more unregistered vehicles than registered vehicles. You can see this from one stats. Major cities have massive problems with traffic congestion. Yet, there are only 6 million registered cars in the entire country and only 500,000 registered trucks and busses total. So all those cars trucks and busses that are unregistered are operating without any health safety and operating inspection.
