Huge haul Michael. Excess baggage fees on your way home 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ll need to get Rob to drive me around SoCal on my next visit 😎 btw, I know it doesn’t get a lot of love but Wings Wild Life is amongst my McCartney favorites. It’s beautifully recorded and the UK version is great. 🎸🥁🎶🌸

So glad to see a new video up and running - we've missed you! What a fantastic haul - I am so jealous. I have hardly any early Mercurys/Living Stereos beyond the various reissues, and it's an area I so want to explore. But prices are ridiculous. I am definitely going to check out this wonderful store in San Pedro.

I love your videos, please do more! I’m an American ex-Pat living in London and your classical videos have really helped to educate me. I found a blue/silver SAX for £7, my very first (Giulini - Dvorak’s New World Symphony). In terms of McCartney, find a UK press of Ram - a wonderful album musically and sonically.

Missed your videos, glad your back. I have always liked classical music, but just started buying them on vinyl in March and I now have about 400-500 . I find great stuff at the thrifts super cheap. I hit the DG mother load last summer on Vacation. I would like to see a video by you or someone else about high value classicals that you can find in the wild. Thanks!

So many great records here, thanks for the information on those pressings/labels: white dog and shaded dog etc. I always avoid digitally recorded vinyl of classical music due to one bad experience I had years ago. In the late 80's I bought an album of digitally recorded classical and it sounded just horrible. So, I have been avoiding them ever since. I will look for the TELARC label and try it out one more time. Thanks for the video!

Hi Michael, Great acquisitions! If you end up enjoying Bauhaus, check out Tones on Tail - a Bauhaus spin off with Daniel Ash and the drummer from Bauhaus. Love and Rockets gets alot of attention, but not TOT for some reason. Also, a great but somewhat cheesy J city pop / fusion is "New York" from 1978. Great Tracks did a reissue cut by Bernie Grundman. Really good stuff . Thanks for sharing!

What a great trip! I'm going down to L.A. (four hour drive) on Saturday for shopping. Did you leave some good London bluebacks at the San Pedro store (I'm interested because that would add an hour to the trip)? Good catch on the Mercury Fennell repackaged record. Fred was my conducting mentor, and I collect EVERYTHING by him. Those records were repackaged in so many ways. I have about 3 linear feet of his Mercury/Telarc/Japanese/other records, each one a treasure. Cheers. Keep your reeds wet! :-)

Wow, that is one BIG tour of LA! I notice the Degritter machine in the background. Did you by chance write a review of its performance? I purchased one recently, and it's awesome, with the one exception that I've found sometimes it works best to pre-clean really old or dirty records with a heavy duty fluid and brush, or even a vacuum cleaner, and then finish the cleaning with a cycle in the Degritter. It doesn't seem to remove finger/food oils or really stuck on dirt as well as more brut force methods, but it absolutely makes for a much quieter record when they are already in pretty good shape. Love you channel -- such a wealth of information!

Regarding that Japanese album that you're saying sounds harsh, etc, at 3:20 , go and rip a harsh-sounding part of it at any decent rate (4416, 2496) and look at its waveform on an audio editor (Audacity, Audition, RX). If the wave is clipped, brick-walled, and/or compressed, then there's your reason for the harshness. Love from Italia.

Currently I'm using: Pure Fidelity Horizon TT, Allnic H1202 phono preamp, Oppo 105D transport, Denafrips Pontus II DAC, Hegel H390 integrated amp, Harbeth 30.2 XD speakers, and a REL T5x sub.

I’m curious about your opinion on the LSO Beethoven symphonies conducted by Krips/ recorded for Everest records? It was one of their audiophile grade 35mm 3 track recordings back when they were experimenting with such things. I recently came into possession of several very old 1/4” 15IPS master copies of the recordings and I believe them to be 2 track mixdowns directly off the edited 3 track originals. Sadly not all 9 symphonies are present or complete and there is some damage within some of the tapes as well, but what *is* there sounds astoundingly good. Classic Records did a reissue back in the day with Bernie Grundman cutting directly off the original 3 tracks, but I think the tapes were in poor shape already (a big problem with older 35mm recordings, which have tended to deteriorate very badly due to shrinking base material) and so the reissue was not particularly well received. I have not heard the reissue for myself (nor original LP issues for that matter) but it would be very hard to imagine them comparing to what I heard coming off these “conventional” 1/4” tape copies, and I have to wonder if these 2 track mixdowns are some of the best sources still extant if the 3 tracks truly are shot by this point in time.
@poetryonplastic
@poetryonplastic 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not super familiar with the Krips Beethoven cycle, but I think generally people seem to like it. I know with those old everest recordings, the recording quality was outstanding, but they were poorly pressed, and sometimes the performers/performances were mediocre (Goossens Rite of Spring is practically unlistenable). I though the classic records reissues were quite good despite the age and damage of the tapes, but Im sure those tape copies would sound much better. No idea about the 2-track vs 3-track, could be a fun shootout!
@MrRom92DAW
@MrRom92DAW 2 жыл бұрын
@@poetryonplastic thank you, I value your opinion on “golden age” classical recordings more than most others so If you think they’re worthwhile I may have to pick up the Grundman/Classic set afterall, if anything just to A/B them! I think there are hi-res versions available too from the current owners of the Everest catalog, but no idea what they would have been sourced from… it’s possible they have conventional 2 track mixdowns in the vault as well. Will have to investigate further!

My guess about the tinny sound on that first album you showed… someone mastered it from an old CD source and forgot that pre-emphasis was a thing on most (all?) Japanese releases in the early 80’s
@thomosburn8740
@thomosburn8740 2 жыл бұрын
Any digitally sourced, direct metal mastered record will be brutally treble-heavy. Probably not the pre-emphasis issue you speculated.
@MrRom92DAW
@MrRom92DAW 2 жыл бұрын
@@thomosburn8740 DMM can pretty treble forward but if this was pressed in Japan for Japan release then I have to assume that DMM was not involved, unless I missed something. The stuff getting pressed at GZ and getting cut in-house there are pretty much the only DMM releases anymore, since they own and operate a large majority of the very small handful of extant/functional DMM lathes left in the world. I’m not aware of any in Japan at the moment, all seem to be in Europe. Abbey Road had one in recent years but I’m pretty certain they converted it to lacquer.
@thomosburn8740
@thomosburn8740 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrRom92DAW I've tripped over both Japanese and Korean DMM pressings. I guess they got the cutting and plating done in Europe and then pressed them locally.
