Learn the lingo! I agree that ‘lawyer-ese’ is complicated. But, if an artist is going to be in this business, knowing the business side of it is just as important as the original talent it took that allowed the recording to happen in the first place.

Entering into a pub admin deal allows you to reap all the benefits of a publisher, while still remaining independent! Also, you'll most definitely still need a good lawyer working in your best interest if you are independent. Thanks for the compliment though, made me smile! :)

Have been an ASCAP member - writer & publisher - for many years. Am considering going to BMI - leaving my already released catalog with ASCAP - based on my understanding of how BMI works, doesn't appear that there is any need to establish an entity for publishing with them. Don't publish anyone's work but my own. Any insight appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I have a very important question. I put my music on bmi not realizing that my agreement was between 2017 - 2019. After not receiving any royalties from bmi at all, i saw something you said and went to check it. low and behold this is what i found. so my question is, How do i renew the contract or Agreement and extend it for longer than 2 years?

BMI agreements normally renew themselves if you don't actively terminate them

It's just good to get your music into TV & film period! Whatever way you can get in, that's the way to go. Just don't be stuck on the idea of 1 library or being independent.

They don't put it in plain English because the law is not in plain English & contracts are written to comply with the law. You are so right that it's not easy to get a trust worthy lawyer, which is why you need to do your homework as a musician & don't accept anyone's service who won't clearly answer your questions or talks down to you like you are inferior.

@@tyniacoats Okay cool, so if you think it's a good idea then I know I'm not crazy lol...because I also write songs, and this year I'm gonna learn to produce & make beats, then mix & master my own records, self publish my own music, and be the first artist in any music genre who's independent sound builds up such a buzz (and following), and who's ability to write, produce, mix, master, & self publish, gives him so much leverage that a record label (although at that point I know I won't need one) will allow me to create and draw up my own contract with my own stipulations, in short I'll be the first artist to sign a label as appose to it being the other way around😁...."because an idea that is not dangerous (or a little far-fetched) is not worthy of being called an idea". Good Lord, look what Tynia's videos done done to the kids...got'em imagining the impossible 😉
