_H.265/HEVC recording, though hailed as a space-saving marvel, is often the bane of any editor working with large files._ _Sure, it compresses your footage into neat little packages, but the trade-off? Glacial editing speeds and the joy of watching your machine struggle to decode every frame. The compression is so intense that when you try to dive into color grading, you’re met with a lovely mix of blocky color noise and banding that makes subtle shading feel like a crime against humanity._ _The sharpness is less like the smooth, buttery texture you’d expect and more like someone cranked up the digital sharpness to 11-crispy to the point of distraction. On the other hand, log recording, especially in a ProRes format, offers all the flexibility and headroom you could dream of. It’s practically begging for you to manipulate the image, giving you the freedom to push shadows, highlights, and color with finesse-something H.265 could only hope for._ _Now, the notion of using H.265 for anything other than final delivery is laughable in the professional world. If you’re converting your beautifully graded ProRes log footage into H.265 as a final step to save space, great, you’re on track._ _But trying to edit in H.265 from the start? That’s like showing up to a Michelin-starred restaurant with a packet of instant noodles-sure, it’s technically food, but it’s not what the pros use. It’s like Filmic Pro slapping a fake “log” profile on their footage, claiming they’ve cracked the professional market, when in reality, it’s a poor imitation._ _And those who blindly follow advice that H.265 is “just fine for editing” are either blissfully ignorant or painfully misguided. If you’re dishing out such advice, without truly grasping the intricacies of editing and color grading, you might as well be handing out crayons at an art gallery._

So useful!!! Just wondering if it’s worth it to use the codec 'Apple ProRes 422 Proxy' instead of HEVC. Is there any slight difference in quality?

It will probably look great with PR proxy but much larger files.

@@editionpick7717 _Filmic pro offers log recording, but it is a fake log profile and fully compressed (using HEVC/H.265) which means you’re color grading won’t look professionally done, unfortunately, this guy is teaching you the same thing; to use a compressed video data to do color grading, which is absolutely stupid and defeats the purpose of pro Rez log_
