That looks like a big heavy bowl. I have had tenons break. Those bowls are sitting over in the corner waiting for me to rescue them. I think you helped.

Thank you Dennis! I am glad it was useful. That blank originally weighed over 40 pounds, but I think when the tenon failed it was down to around 20... I appreciate the encouragement!

Why not use a face plate? You could have used a small drill to save your center. .

Luckily, all three bowls were saved! I rarely use a faceplate anymore, I hate the time it takes drilling out broken screws if one breaks. If I use a faceplate it is to rough out the bowl outside and add a tenon. I have never tried to core while a bowl is attached to a faceplate? Does that work well?

@@tonyturnswood It Depends on several things, The thickness and the depth of the coring. I usually use a sacrificial tenon when I use a face plate. When you are about to loose your center then use a very small drill and just go deep enough to mark the center.
