If you have a removable hitch; remove the hitch, put the strap end in the 2" square receiver, and lock it in the receiver with the hitch pin. Those pins are hardened and can take more load than most straps.

Great video Jeff ! I almost ordered a cheap tow strap before I saw your video. Just ordered a snatch rope from ASR , and I made sure they knew it was your video that sold their rope. Keep on truckin' good buddy !

Good video. Thanks for the ASR shout out. I always wanted a recovery rope but felt the " other company " prices were out of line with reality. Now I have what I've been looking for!

Could I make a recommendation! What if you made that video, and in said video had everything someone should have in a "oh shit" container. Recovery, cold gear kits, safety gear etc. That'd be great. :) I'm trying to put one together myself so I can get out one bag or tub and have everything I need instead of digging around and finding random stuff.

Thanks Jeff, questions. Isn't it better to use the strap without the shackle? I ask because of two thing: if there is a breakage, the shackle is worse flying through the air than any strap piece AND second, the shackle--is it not rated for far less weight than the strap? Next, why do trucks like mine have left and right attachment points--after all, without a bridle of some sort, the pull is then off of dead center.

Can someone clarify on the physics? Springs do store energy, sure, but mostly the strap just absorbs the shock of the pulling vehicle until there's enough tension to overcome the friction/whatever other forces on the vehicle behind which then will start moving. They can't store more energy than the truck pulling it provides of course, they just stretch to spread out the shock over time (with some small amount of energy loss). When you see a log, for instance (big object stuck by friction), being tugged it sort of 'springs' out because the strap will stretch until there is just enough tension to break the static friction of the log on the ground. Sliding friction is lower than static, so once overcome it will 'jump' and slide along more freely (like tires with traction vs skidding on pavement). Rolling friction is similarly lower than static. You'll see the same thing pulling with chain without any stretch it will just reach the tension point faster. If I'm not correct here than I'm curious about how this works (with any of the above) but I can't imagine a 20 foot tow strap stretches more than a few inches or so to really give that much 'spring loaded' action. It does do a good job at cushioning and giving you a head start to build of force with the speed of your towing vehicle.

youtubeuser9927 A true kinetic recovery rope will stretch around 30%. If you search around, you'll see videos that show you how much they do stretch and how little tow straps, like lifting straps will not stretch.
@paule_20316 жыл бұрын
The stretch "stored potential energy" in the strap will keep pulling after the peak force is applied to get moving. Where as a chain would transfer 100% of its energy in one instance.

What diameter rope should I get? JKU towing other JK/U's and the odd F150/F250. When PowerModz was reviewing kinetic recovery ropes with FJs and Landcrusiers he was saying that he wasn't getting enough stretch out of the 1" rope and went back down to 7/8". He was saying that their rigs were +/-5000 to 6000lbs with 37" tires. Thanks.

Thanks for this informative video! I am little confused by the terminologies of snatch strap vs recovery strap. I think for less than 40 bucks, you'll only find "recovery" strap like pro comp and smittybilt. For a strap that is labeled as "snatch" strap and it states how much percent it will stretch, they are usually 60 bucks like the ARB. Also Smittybilt makes a cheaper "recovery" strap and a more expensive "snatch" strap, which look totally different. So i think recovery and snatch straps are two different things. So I wonder how much does a typical 40 bucks recovery strap actually stretch? Like can you noticeably stretch it a little by hand? Does it feel very different from a tow strap? I'm about to buy some recovery gears the first time. Thanks for your input!

OK, got it, not looped over your tow-ball....does somebody make a "proper" Attachment point that can be used with your receiver hitch? OR, is that square sliding hitch with the cross-pin a "weak point"?

Nice vid. Thanks for talking about safety. I hoped you would talk about people who (wrongly) say- "straps don't hold any kinetic energy and if they break they will just fall to the ground." As you know these straps can hurt and/or kill.
