Cocktail Chemistry

Күн бұрын

I grew up on Marvel comics but only recently realized that some Marvel superheroes have good taste when it comes to cocktails. Here we recreate Doctor Strange's Mai Tai, Tony Stark's vodka martini, and Logan's fireball.

I created a couple drinks in my day, though I’ve lost the specifics. The first (since there’s an existing similar down to the name drink) is the Lightning Bug (creative I know). This is based on the Firefly, but uses the juice from a grapefruit frozen in snow, grenadine, vodka, and dry sake. The second is the Tenjou, which I doubt anyone would ever take seriously but I’ll repeat it anyway. 2oz vodka, 2oz triple sec, grenadine (these are the ingredients I had on hand to work with at the time). Shake with ice and pour into a glass containing 3 pineapple rings and 1oz of pineapple juice. I believe that was the recipe. The drink was more or less my idea of an alcoholic fruit cocktail. One of these days I’ll have to experiment again.

I just made the fireball for Christmas. In general, I can't stand cinnamon flavored/scented things. Candies, drinks, decorative brooms. But I really hate fireball. For some reason though, this receipe stuck in my mind since I first watched the video. And I must say, it really is excellent. The cinnamon isn't the predominant flavor. The spice of the red pepper comes through first, with a mild ear warming effect. The cinnamon just kinda peeks through at the end. One of CC's easier recipes, and a wholehearted recommendation.

One question that I have with the homemade fireball could you be able to use an isi whipper to rapidly infuse it? Obviously you'd have to use a smaller amount but is it doable especially with whole cinnamon or would I have to crush it up first? and obviously making a thinner syrup of the honey would help too so it wouldn't clog the mechanism.

would probably need a longer steeping time, since kvass is lower in alcohol promillage (capsaicine dissolves exceptionally well in alcohol and fats) . I've tried something similar with dried chilis and homemade mead, and that needed about two weeks to steep before any heat came through.

Two things: 1) still too much vermouth. Put a bit of vermouth in your glass, then coat the glass in the vermouth and shake out the extra. Then stir your vodka and olive brine and pour into glass. 2) it’s an old bit of bartender lore that an even number of olives is bad luck. 1, 3, 5 or 7 but never 4.
