Whilst I hated Howard's character with a passion (he's such a creep, even after marrying Bernadette and he continued to hit on Penny after she started dating Leonard), I do think the show's creators did an excellent job portraying all four of the main clichéd nerdy archetypes. There's the narcissistic, low EQ nerd that thinks he's better than everyone else (Sheldon), the one that understands "normal" society but knows that he's too abnormal to fit in because of his likes/dislikes/IQ (Leonard). The shy nerd terrified of non-nerds, most especially girls (Raj) and the creepy one (Howard).
