The original Aeropro (not used here to recreate) weighs in at 305g unstrung. (not 300g, as listed on the frame) The weight strung is 320g with a 328 mm Balance. Add overgrips (Nadal's preferred overgrips), but take away undergrip, add his dampener, add 12g of kead to the head/top and 5g to the butt and end up with 339.7w. The weight strung is actually 339.7g 333.9mm balance and a 359.5 swing weight on the Aeropro Drive of 2004-2005 with Nadal's setup. 55lbs is accurate for Nadal. (Slightly higher in higher attitudes) It's a Syntec Pro Black and a Babalat VS Original White overgrip. (I don't know why you are using a different racket/raquet) His racquet must be extremely HH. (Head heavy) If his Aeropro Drive gets to 339.7, he has to add about 25gr of weight. If it 5gr or 5.5gr on the butt, then it's not 12gr (as thought) but 20gr or so at least in the head. (Probably 18gr., which I'd 36 inches of lead. .5gr per inch = 18gr. His overgrip and dampener can't weigh 10 gr. How is it 333 balance, when it's so HH? That's like 3pts HL. 333.5. The Aeropro starts out at 300gr. (It doesn't) weight and has a 320 balance (unstrung [I doesn't]). So, almost 40gr. has to be added. The strings are maybe 16gr. + 5.5 putty + 11 gr. (lead) That's means the (over) grip weighs 6.5 grams. That is possible but, the undergrip was removed. (No dampener on your re-creation) [his measurements are about .7 grams heavier. .. dampener, I guess and sweat. Maybe Cortex is to blame?!! It is to blame for everything. ;) Probably because the racquet/racket starts out 7pts HL and Nadal makes it 2.5 -about- pts HL. Must be 18gr of lead in the 4 strips, if the frame was accurate. It isn't, so you add 12g plus 5g, like Nadal currently. Huge difference in what Babolat states on the actual frame. You pick up a new Pure Aero or Pure Drive (not Pure Aero Drive) and they are about bang on or 3g underweight from what is stated. That's a minimum of 8g difference from the 2004 to say a 2019 model. You pick up an Aerodrive Pro from 2004 and it feels heavier and head heavier. So, using a Cortex version from a different model is weird. Pick up a Pure Strike 100 retail (current model) and then pick up a retail and they are stated ro weigh the sake with the same 320mm Balance. Not even close.

Just curious, instead of using the Pure Aero, how about using the Pure Aero Tour ? Plus some lead tape at 12 or 10 and 2, I am sure the SW could move up to 360. Anyway for mere mortals like me, SW of 340 is good enough.
@joahlee56523 жыл бұрын
I think it has too much weight in the throat or lower in the hoop to build it up to that swingweight while keeping the weight in check. My experience is that with a racket like the pure areo tour, it will probably be around 345g or more to get it up to the right swingweight with the right balance.

A strategy to get the swing weight spec correct is leave off a couple of grams of total weight and move that weight in lead tape up and down the racquet till you get the exact SW you want.
@adamdixon50513 жыл бұрын
Because you have static weight and balance point you could also get Swingweight. What you should have done is moved the lead around under the bumper because lead driectly (and i mean direcvtly) at 12 gives the biggest swingweight. You could have For Example had no lead at 12 directly but 3 or 4 layers at 11 o clock and 1 o clock (still be hid under the bumper). This wouldnt affect static weight or balance obviously but would bring down swingweight. Roughly 2 grams of lead at 12 is 7points swingweight. (3grams is roughly 10 points). You metnioned you strung it three times already. Try again - you can get it. SW 368. Cut stings and take bumper off. (meausre SW now You need -7 right). So take of the lead and reuse that exact amount. Cut up and use in different locations. I would try and cut 2 inches from the middle of each of the 4 strips and place them ontop of the left lead, That will be really close i think.

This has to be the best online instructional video about racket customization. You even used the awl. It's almost as if you were giving away some ancient Chinese secret. The putty is nice. The only problem I saw is when the over grips were applied. It would have been nice to see the other side of the grip as you were winding. Getting started on the other side is the tricky part. With Nadal's infamous retentiveness, can you imagine how difficult it is being the guy who does the lead tape and stringing?

Great experiment Harry. To get even closer to Rafa spec, I think it is fair to guess that the stock grip weighs around 16.5g and the overgrips weigh 5.5g each installed, so that Rafa gets the frame back to the standard unstrung level of 300g using the 5.5g of putty. (16.5=5.5+5.5+5.5). Hence, if the strings weigh 16g, you must have added about 23g of lead under the bumper to get to the total weight of 339g. Since Rafa's 15-guage strings will be a few grams heavier than the 15L variety, in order to get the swingweight closer to 361 you could remove about 5g from the bumper area and place it (2.5g + 2.5g) at 3 & 9. That should get all specs very close to Rafa's, as moving 5g of lead from the 10-2 region to 3 & 9 will not change the balance greatly and should see about a 6-point SW reduction. I would really like to see what you and coaches Andrew and Chris think of playing with the racket. Can you get Rafa's silly spin levels? Thanks, great analysis.

This is how to customise by shooting from the hip. Any given day, better lucky than good, eh? It does not take three weeks and four attempts to do this. There need not be any “let’s see what we get” moments if one was to plan the customisation methodically using any of a number of easily available online customisation worksheets. It’s not particularly difficult to do. Racquet customisation is not done on the basis of “Rafa has this length of lead from this grommet to that grommet”. This type of arbitrary approach does not account for variable quality control and specs between different sticks. Hence, the excuses about being able to match the weight and balance point, but not the swingweight. 🤦

TennisSpin, does it make a difference to put lead under the head guard VS putting lead on the inner hoop? Thanks
@davidpayumo233 жыл бұрын
If you put lead tape in the inner hoop. The clamp from the stringing machine will damage the tape as the stringer is putting the racquet on the machine. So you need to leave a gap for that part of the inner hoop. Or put the lead tape under the bumper guard.
@a2casius3 жыл бұрын
In terms of numbers, it makes only a slight difference given the thickness of the hoop at the top. Though putting it on the inner hoop is great because you can make quick adjustments, it's also a con because the lead might come off accidentally when you least want it. For example, when it's being restrung or in some cases, when the hoop is so flexible that the lead tape crinkles up and finally comes off (Harry has this trouble with his Clash). In such cases, the only way of stopping it from coming off accidentally is to secure it under the bumper guard.

@adamdixon50513 жыл бұрын
@@malagabee Of course it wont change balance. Balance is head weight vs Handle weight. Moving the lead from once place on head to another place on head has no effect on balance.
@nickschneider48303 жыл бұрын
@@adamdixon5051 you are completely wrong. The balance point is located where there is zero net torque due to the racket’s own weight (ie the racket doesn’t tip in either direction when placed on a balance rod). Torque = force x distance from pivot point (the pivot point is the balance rod). For a racket to remain balanced on the rod, the torque created by the weight on one side of the pivot must be equal and opposite to the torque created by the weight on the other side. Since torque is a linear function of force (ie weight) and DISTANCE... the location of the weighting matters just as much as the weight itself. Imagine two kids, both 100lbs on a see saw, sitting an equal distance from the middle of the see saw. The see saw won’t tip. If you then move one kid forward, cutting his distance from the see saw center in half, the other kid will sink, as he now applies twice the leverage, twice the torque as the kid closer to the middle - in spite of the fact that they both weigh the same. What I am explaining is leverage, and this concept is used all the time in simple tools like crowbars, screwdrivers, etc. the greater the distance a weight is applied from a point of rotation, the more torque it exerts. And so, by changing the location of the weight on a tennis racket relative to the balance point, you will in turn change the balance point.
@nickschneider48303 жыл бұрын
My thoughts are this: the swing weight machine measures swing weight with the pivot point located on the lower section of the handle. If the swing weight machine measured the racket’s resistance to torque at the true balance point, these two rackets would indeed yield identical swing weights, but this is not the case. It can therefore be assumed that Nadal adds more weight in the location where it exerts less influence on the swing weight machine; inside the butt of the racket near where the swing weight machine holds the grip - and less weight at the tip (nadal’s racket has a lower swing weight). This will require some math, because simply removing x grams from the tip and adding the same amount x grams to the location at which the SW machine grips the racket will indeed change the balance point. He must then calculate what fraction of weight x must be removed from the tip such that the net torque on the racket remains 0 when the balance point remains unchanged. This can be tinkered with until the swing weight approaches 361, and the balance points remain almost equal. It is true that doing so will indeed yield slightly less weight in the recreated racket, but this is likely because there is inherent error in the balance board process - the balance points weren’t truly identical as he showed here. In order to create two rackets of identical specs in all 3 categories, one would need to simulate the process using computer software to optimize perfectly the distribution of lead tape - and even then the numbers won’t be truly identical. He can however manage to get the swingweight category much closer while still maintaining close numbers in the other two categories

Of course he wouldn’t. His customisation technique involves eyeballing the length of lead strips from this grommet to that, rather than calculations based on starting and finishing weights and locations to attain an accurate match of weight/BP/SW. Imagine if he had more than one Rafa racquet with identical specs but differing amounts of lead tape under the headguard (as one would expect given manufacturing tolerances and variability between frames). It’d be errr... errr... errr... well, that’s interesting.... errr... errrr... er....not sure we can do anything with that... err... errr... 🤣😂

I rebalanced and reweighted my TF-40 315 to exactly match my first wooden racquet, a Jelineck Canadiana (Laminated Bamboo!). The Canadiana played great at 375 grams and a COB of 13.5 inches, but TF-40 315 played absolutely terrible probably because of the larger surface area.

For the base, the best technique is to go to Home Depot and get expanding foam and screws of different lengths and weights. You then spray the foam inside the handle, and screw the desired weight screws.

It seems competitive people like Rafa and Novak do not like to change their racket. RF went from ps85 to tour90 to ps97rf. And Andy Murray went from Radicalish to Ezone 100. I wonder why they don't demo more rackets. I find demoing rackets a lot of fun. But I suppose I'm not a typical competitive person.
