Jesse is quite the dedicated teacher isn’t he? I loved the description of the fall crops; the teepees of corn, the glistening, golden straw. I can just smell it thinking about it. It’s been a busy, busy week, I’m behind on videos, lol. Congratulations on new baby Woodrow ❤. TeresaSue

Hey Tipper, I can't get over what a great teacher and educator you are to me. I am not much of a reader. I tend to only read in complete solitude, with no distractions. Otherwise, I don't obsorb what I'm reading. But I like being read to. I have some real fond memories of the smells of books and being inside of libraries in my school years. God bless you.

My grandparents told wonderful stories of their fox hunting days. I was surprised my grandmother rode in the hunt. So sorry I didn’t write down the stories of those days and many others. My grandmother was born in Owsley County Ky. The house is still there and I go back to visit the area occasionally, usually for genealogy research. Like you I started reading very early and to this day (I’m 76) my family is amazed at how fast I can read a book. A real book in the hand is so much better than reading online. That’s not enjoyable to me at all. Normally have something with me to read wherever I go. I rarely miss your program. God bless you.

Such a change that Jesse at this school was so welcomed to come and join all the activities the whole area young and old joined in to do together. I could almost feel the happiness of everybody staying late to enjoy hours of old time music under the moon and tasting the foam of sorghum with a carved willow wood paddle.

Oh my… Jessie what were you thinking??? Lol I felt anxious as you read about him walking home. I can’t imagine how cold and tired he was. It would have been hard even if it was good weather but heavy deep snow would have been awful. I can imagine that he must have felt overwhelmed being too far to go back and still having so far to go. I can’t wait to hear more next Friday night. Thank you Tippper. You have a very nice reading voice.😃

Tipper, this story is so interesting and special to me! Years ago (in the late eighties), I was substituting in a small Christian school in Southwestern Virginia for a math and science teacher. I too had to do the same homework as my students, especially for the Geometry class, which I had to work hard at in high school in the late sixties!!! That was a challenge to substitute for 6 weeks in subjects that were not my favorite subjects but studied very hard in high school in order to stay on the Honor Roll every year!😅 So I know GOD HAS HIS WAY OF TEACHING ME MANY THINGS!!!!!!😂 Thank you so much for reading to us! It’s a blessing and one of my favorite things of the week!❤

What a wonderful portion of his story. I lived where his student took on and solved the algebra problem. The way community was solid and not fractured like we live in today was inspiring. The richness and depth of their society seems a place we can only dream of to many of us in these times. ~Patty in Oregon~

I was just thinking how different it might have been if Bud Waters would have been laughing in the classroom of the other community. Spirits are territorial. The writer must know this for his stories really showcase the principal difference between the thirty miles.

In many ways this is a rather progressive community. And what ravenous readers his students are. I can just see the scene of sitting in the moonlight listening to the music. Those trees in autumn must have been stunning. And the sense of community built by fellowshipping as they worked together. Jesse is such a wonderful story teller. Really enjoying this one. Can't wait to see what happens next.

I have early memories of my mother reading to me. Growing up, reading was one of the few things I liked at school. Early on I had a teacher who would read stories to the class. It was wonderful. Later in life, raising three children I enjoyed reading to them for years. Usually bedtime stories. Wonderful memories. I still read a lot, everyday. And I really enjoy you reading stories. Thank you.

I loved hearing you talk about your love of reading, Tipper. Growing up, we didn’t have a TV in our home so we were voracious readers as well. On Christmas we knew that at least one of our gifts would be a book. I continued that tradition with my daughter. Does anyone remember the Thornton Burgess book series? They were about forest creatures with interesting names and personalities-Old Granny Fox, Sammy Jay, Old Mother West Wind, Mr. Toad and so many others. My older brother loved them so much, he would have me check them out for him from the library so he wouldn’t be seen in the children’s section. So many great memories! Thanks!

Yes! I too remember the Thornton Burgess books. Every Saturday the whole family would pile in the car and go into town to go to the local library (and do weekly shopping). I went many places and met many people through books while never leaving my home county! Still love to read!

I used to "eat books" according to my momma. She couldn't keep enough of them. When I was bad she'd ban me from reading and make me write sentences and I hated it 😂😂😂 "I will not lock my brother in a freezer in the field" x100+ I just find it fascinating how he thought about teaching. I've been teaching in my field, aerospace engineering, for about 15 years and I love Jesse's approach. Games, then catching up, then whatever we will learn next. It both humbles the teacher and invites new learning skills on both sides! Thank you, Tipper, for another great reading!

I just like the content of the book. You have history, humor, the juxtaposition or contrast of his two teaching communities/experiences, camaraderie and stubbornness interspersed with bit of fleeting meanness. It's just a well-rounded book thus far.

I really like this story! When I was in grade school, our library was about the size of a small closet, but I dearly loved library day because I loved reading. The school used the same room for the gymnasium, the lunchroom, and the theater. Right beside the stage was a tiny little room that housed the beloved library books.

i like how he describes the land being split as it is passed down to the following generations. I wish things still were that way. It's to bad Jesse could not teach school and do all the other jobs he liked at the same time. Popeye could do it. I am not knowledgable about plants, but the ones to your left look like pictures I have seen of opium. Of course, I know you could not be growing opium. One thing I hope Jesse addresses is the disparity between school and the job market, the failure of the school system to prepare people for a decent job in many cases. Have a blessed evening!
