RED BLUFF CALIFORNIA, (Main Street ) DRIVING DOWNTOWN

Here's our evening in Redbluff Saturday evening, june 2023: There was a bar on the main street that I was told served food. We walked in, there were about only 5 guys in there giving us the stink eye. After 15 minutes sitting at the bar the young girl tending the bar finally acknowledged us: sorry, kitchen's closed as the guys were having their food brought out. We asked if there was any place open... she just shrugged. Clearly they didn't like outsiders and were content with just the 5 customers they had. We looked all over for another restaurant, literally every place was closed, on a Saturday at 7pm? We finally found a Mexican restaurant open and it smelled like a men's room but we had no choice. The next day we looked around, it's like a post-apocalyptic ghost town. probably half the main drag is abandon storefronts. The only people we saw were tweakers. Redbluff sucks, there is no reason to stop here.

This is my narrative of a drive through Red Bluff circa 1970-72. Living west of town, I would drive into the downtown via Walnut Avenue. At the intersection of Walnut and Main, I would turn north and head to Fosters Freeze (I believe it is a vacant lot about 1 block south of Growney Motors). Drive though the parking lot, then turn back on to Main Street and drive south to Creme King (Thai House). Drive through the parking lot, the head back north on Main Street. At the stop light of Main Street and Antelope Blvd. I would turn east and drive to one of the few, at that time, true cloverleaf interchanges in the US (or that was what we believed). Drive around the entire cloverleaf and end up heading back west on Antelope Blvd and back to Main Street. At that point, we had several options 1) do it all again 2) drive to the north end of town and see what was happening at Jenny's Auto Court ( I think there is a mini mart there now), 3) drive to the south end of town and see who was at the Lariat Bowl, 4) go out the Shell Gas Station on Antelope Blvd and see if Dennis Poulton was working. Great fun. Oh, and if there was a Teen Dance head out to the Armory.

@@MR.OWENCALIFORNIA You bet. I wasn't very clear about the cloverleaf. It was a true 4 leaf clover. We could just go around the four clovers over and over again as they fed into each other. Of course Cal Trans has since redone the entire exchange.
