@David Lenz They absolutely do! Its so important to be aware of every perspective and not have your mind influenced by other opinions. Its very hard to not get pulled into that trap. Im almost 40 and had a complete 180 on my views about 4 years. I cant see myself becoming more conservative because I blew past the conservative policies in this country. My views would change if certain rules were enacted. Unfortunately with this administration and how they are catering to the rich while so many are starving.......I can't imagine my views to change just because I get older. You're obviously a very smart person by watching this video. Do you know what I'm missing in my viewpoint? I've been trying to relate to conservatives for the past 5 years but to no avail. 🙂

A majority of Americans do seem to live in the middle, just leaning slightly to one side or the other. The ones that the media portray seem to be the growing number of political "extremists" like the far-right or the far-left who both have made their share of controversial laws.
@jimmathers79244 жыл бұрын
I personally hate the two party system. It simplifies political beliefs way too much. Someone who is libertarian right can share views with a libertarian left when it comes to things like limiting the government's interference with everyday life, but completely disagree with each other on economic ideas. Two authoritarian right people could have wildly different views on the cultural axis. There are republicans who don't think trump represents their views and there are democrats that think the same thing about biden. Having only 2 sides creates an "us vs them" mentality. With more political parties, it's easier for people to ally themselves on certain issues with people who have differing views in other areas. It would also lead to candidates that more accurately depict people's political standpoint.
@edwardgucker57904 жыл бұрын
It is notable that political debates and polling tend to express everything as Democrats vs. Republicans or liberals vs. conservatives while the largest political group in the country is Independents. They get divided up and wedged into the other two groups based on how they "lean," but that's a mistake I think. The opinions and positions of this group should be kept separate and given more attention when media discusses the politics of Americans in general. After all, they choose to be Independent for a reason.

True, the blue brain wants to get all the information, but most are not intelligent enough to weigh all that information ... for instance the example of the kid who killed someone explained at 7:09 .... about a person in crisis who robs and stabs an old lady. To me, I am fine to try to understand what happened and why, but if someone has the bad judgement, by whatever reason, to think they need to stab an old lady to survive ... that is a person who cannot be trusted in society. The answer, the blue brain answer to that is to have alternatives for people who need help other than crime, such as a UBI, universal basic income or charity or welfare - not to "feel" sorry for what he has become and ignore his behavior because of that.
@ibrahimalmc18247 жыл бұрын
That was just an example to demonstrate how blue brain can change it's opinion by given new information it doesn't suggest anything about judgement. Calm down nobody is suggesting that blue brain is smarter, no need to be defensive... oh! Of course you are going to be defensive, you are a red brain, right?
@PregnantSausage5 жыл бұрын
@@ibrahimalmc1824 Well, technically, what she is saying and what you have just outlined does suggest the blue brain is smarter -- it is open to new ideas and views the world as complex, which, to understand requires one to appreciate the layers. Intelligence and openness go hand in hand.
@Heligoland3605 жыл бұрын
@@PregnantSausage No, being open requires intelligence to be successful, that does not imply that people who are open are intelligent, merely that they'd better be lest they be swindled and screwed over in life like the vast majority of blue brains are.
@calvin55413 жыл бұрын
@@PregnantSausage intelligence is the ability to learn, remember, and apply what has been learned. Openness helps with the learning part because there is more intake, but does not help with the remembering or application. Strategy and memory are totally different things. And consider this, say a red brain encounters many threats, tries to fight them off, and fails. That red brain can remember how the engagement went, and be better prepared to fight it off next time. Application of knowledge is not a political thing. If your takeaway from the video is that one type of brain is superior, then you’re missing the point.
@calvin55413 жыл бұрын
@@Heligoland360 exactly. If someone was completely blue brain without an ounce of red, they would walk right into a pack of hyenas because it looked new and interesting. There needs to be a balance, some element of fear and self preservation is needed. Humans have those things for a reason.
@McCarthy17766 жыл бұрын
The red brain, blue brain split makes sense if you are only looking at it from one dimension. If someone is higher is trait openness because of their brain structure it may lean them more towards being "blue" in the sense that they are more open to immigration or cultural and religious freedom or change. But then if you look at economic policies for example the parts of the brain that effect your position on taxation and spending in a certain area may be entirely different. There are a huge variety of issues in the political world that it makes no sense to clump them up into 2 categories and say that the human brain genetically clumps those together naturally. Sure genetics probably plays a significant role when determining stances on specific policies, but your overall political stance can technically involve infinite policies. Culture and socio economic class also play a huge part as well. There are too many dimensions involved to have some general concept of "red brain" vs "blue brain"

I think libertarians are a weird mix of both extremes. Some Libertarians are totally open to all kinds of new and weird stuff, and want no restrictions on exploration. Other libertarians believe in absolute liberty because they want no limits on the methods they can employ to defend themselves. Further still, some people are libertarians because they only care about themselves and not a tribe or a territory. It’s a weird mix that might not fit on the spectrum.

It is all fine and well to look at tendencies in the brain, but that is not everything, just as in a differential equation there are initial conditions and different "mathematical terms" that had different effects at different times on the output of a function. There are a lot of people who have the red brain characteristics but who are Liberals because they know through reason that Liberalism works and Conservativism doesn't ... and one way they know that is that they do not just settle for some one-shot resolution of issues by theoretical hand-waving, they look appropriately into history and the facts. Conservatives always want to fire up the aggressive people by using fear to hype up their amygdalas and force them to declare are they going to follow or not? This is the kind of thinking that gave us the financial crisis under Bush ... Goldman Sachs said, we need a billion dollars with no strings attached and if we do not get it you will be responsible for the crash of the world economy. They did not prove anything to anyone, and looking back on things, they were lying and all that money went to a class of people who are very very rich and no have much more money to invest into corrupting our government even more, and this is a increasing feedback loop such that the bad guys find it easier to take over, and easier to get more money to make it easier for them to take over. They see the value in "triggering" the assertive people with lots of money by making it sound like they will benefit, or they will be severely threatened if they do not assent.
@calvin55413 жыл бұрын
Unfettered liberalism does not work though...there has to be a balance. Pure conservatism doesn’t work and pure liberalism won’t work either. With pure conservatism, the country will shrivel up and regress into itself, cease to produce anything or interact with its neighbors, and begin a process of infighting that will lead to its destruction. With pure liberalism, the country will be robbed blind by its neighbors, it’s borders will cease to exist, it will be flooded by opportunists from every corner of the earth, all asking for a piece of the pie by playing off of people’s good nature, and the nation will disintegrate into a cesspool of anarchy. I can give you a laundry list of failed states who tried either of these methods.
