One con that wasn't mentioned is that these cameras would randomly brick themselves. Like to the point where many productions would keep anywhere from 2-10 extra of them around on set just to be able to hot swap as necessary.

Great video. We were early adopters of the Red cameras and bought an early one, upgrading as each new versions came out. We shot a lot of national television shows with one of these old beasts. As I recall, we replaced a Panasonic Varicam whose body cost us $75,000 and shot in 720 when HD first raised its ugly head. So the Red One was a huge bargain and upgrade to us at the time, and we used the crap out of it. The down side of the camera was that it was clearly designed by engineers and not by production people so there are a lot of design elements that are a fairly big pain in the ass (you mention many of them) and it was difficult to rig because of the body design, though work arounds appeared not too long after its release. If you have a production crew of four or five camera people, then a big heavy camera is no problem. But if you are on your own, this thing will make you work for a living. I wonder how this compares to a Panasonic Gh4 image wise, which shoots 4K and you can buy new now for around $600 and weighs two and half pounds…
@marklondon87933 жыл бұрын
Great question. The GH4 probably still holds up!
@KyleShields3 жыл бұрын
GH4 has about the same low light limitations so I’d say it’s comparable! Great camera, I sold my GH4 a year or so ago. Best hybrid ever made IMO. I have gone back to basics and use old HDV camcorders and get a clean out over HDMI, works great for KZbin content. I’m sure people may see that as dumb, but buying pro level cams at $400 or so is too good to pass up if you can handle the limitations.

We filmed our first feature on a used RED One MX and it’s in post right now. Back when we were looking at camera options, we had an Sony A7S but needed to do a lot of chromakey and other VFX work so we needed RAW. The Blackmagic URSA original was nice but kept hearing about quality control and low light issues so compared to something like the Sony FS700 or FS7 and an early Kinefinity Kinemax, a used RED One MX made the most sense and was completely competitive with the new options. Even today a year after filming, it’s still up there competing with new 4K options!

The reason the manufacturer blocked the 4K option for untested hard drives is because they did not want to get complaigns about camera freezing or skipping frames. Since 4K requires high bandwidth, many poor HDDs would cause stability issues, which the user would interpret as a problem with the camera itself. Hence, the limitation. Like the Sony A6400 is very picky about medai too, esp. if set to 4K 100M.
