John is still kind of an overgrown kid at this point in the game, John has Abigail in his pocket due to Jack, but it’s not until Chapter 6 where Arthur starts kicking sense into John about being “loyal to what matters” and then finally before they part ways with John pleading with Arthur to stay with him so he can stay comfortable with who he was, but Arthur tells him in desperation to “get the hell out of here and be a goddamn man” and look after his family in a serious manner because that’s all that should’ve mattered to him now, which lead to the rest of the plot of John becoming a real family man and a better man in itself.

Micah is supposed to be the douche in this scene but honestly just John is. He leaves 19 year old Abigail for a year when Jack is still a baby, comes back but still refuses to be a father to him, refuses to marry Abigail, makes jack and Abigail sleep outside under a tarp while he has one of the biggest freaking tents in camp, hits on Karen, but the minute some other guy is like "can I ask her out then?" He acts like he's been threatened and disrespected.

Spoiler Alert: I thought the most redeeming part of him was his effectiveness in combat. He was a deadly shot as we witnessed in Rhodes, and was truly at home within the chaos of combat. He is a hardened individual, and nihilistic about the value of life of others. I think they could have done him more justice with not making him the snitch, but only the power hungry fool that destroys the gang with his reckless planning. I think making him both the poor leader, and the betrayer of the gang which he tried to get influence over, was a bit sloppy writing on RockStars part, and I think they could at least gave him more redeeming, although contradicting, characteristics, instead of making completely unredeemable in the end.

Let's not forget this version of john is a different version from the one in the epilogue and red dead 1. This is a john that isn't that much of a good father until bronte kidnaps his son.
