I would describe Red Dragon a as a re-adaptation of the novel. I think it took one or two things from Manhunter, such as the fakeout scare with Graham’s family in the middle of the movie after they decipher Lecter’s note to Dolarhyde. But it feels to me like they went back to the book for the bulk of the writing. I actually really like this one. I might like it better than Manhunter because of Ralph (pronounced “rafe”) Fiennes’ performance, but that is in no way meant to be a slight against Manhunter. Manhunter is a very stylized take on a very good story, and is hard to say much anything bad about it

I prefer Manhunter, but this is still a good movie, Fiennes is great but overall I think Red Dragon is too polished for me. Great review chaps.

I quite enjoyed Red Dragon… but it was no Silence of the Lambs. I think I prefer Manhunter. So glad you guys reviewed it though. You’re my go-to for rational reviews!!!
@fallingpetunias90464 ай бұрын
I feel like the cast for Manhunter just in total did better with less than the cast from Red Dragon. Which isn't to discount some excellent performances as I think Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson absolutely stole the story. Manhunter also has that slight charm of just being an older movie, though, so I may be biased.
@waynesWyrdWorld4 ай бұрын
@@fallingpetunias9046 no I totally agree. Manhunter is a very stripped back character study with a morbid tone. Whilst Red Dragon is serviceable (and does have some great performances), it feels very glossy. Having said that, maybe with a different director it could’ve been even better.

on the subject of the tattoo, [ im a tattooist ] I can say it's done well and looks very realistic, the whip shading on the tribal elements sitting on his shoulders is spot on in terms of that patchy look you get from average skill artists. it looks like black work with no greys applied to smoothen it out. 10/10

Back in the day this was a great idea, Hanibal Lecter is one the iconic characters of cinema and the concept of prequels was not as prominent or common as it is nowadays, so a history leading to the silence of the lambs and the return of Anthony Hopkins was fascinating, the movie itself has cool things going on and is well made, however, indeed other adaptations of the source material turn out better

I hate to use this very overused term, but Red Dragon is absolutely "mid." It has a lot of the right ingredients, a great scriptwriter, a terrific cast, a bombastic Danny Elfman score and was being billed as a return to form after the divisive reception to Hannibal. But....its kind of dull, unmemorable and workmanlike overall. A serviceable sequel that gets worse with age as you realise just how unremarkable it was.
@RockyRoyale844 ай бұрын
I really like this movie, but even i understand it's got nothing on Manhunter, Silence, and Hannibal.

For me neither movie captured Francis Dolerhyde because he is supposed to be of Schwarzenegger proportions but meek and mild in personality. A complete contradiction. That is a huge aspect of the character in the book. I agree with you guys that a lot of this film seems contrived and that the actors either over played or under performed their parts. I’m still hoping for a version worthy of the book. Great review as always.
@ThreadBomb4 ай бұрын
Red Dragon is not terrible, it's just not as memorable or impactful as it should have been. Norton's performance is very disappointing; I'm not sure what emotion or attitude he thought he was portraying, but he just looks tired all the time! Honestly, this could have been a better movie with a better actor as the hero. I do agree that the film spends a bit too much time with the Tooth Fairy when it could have given Will Graham more development.

2:45 I don't think that's fair. They are both based on the same book. It wasn't strictly remaking the movie it was just doing the book again. 12:56 Because thats how it was it the book. Like its not copying its using the same source material. Its like making lord of the rings then say chaning helms deep battle to be in the middle of the day because itd be to simmilar to peter jacksons. Like its just not a fair criticism 17:34 Where'd you get that from? They are speaking nice together sure in the overtext but the subtext is they hate one another, Will is power playing Lecter because he knows him, and Lecter hates that and hates Will. Lecter enjoyed playing with Clarease and toying with her and leading her to the answer Will and Lecter's relationship is the opposite.

How to ruin a perfectly good story with a great cast of some of the best actors of their time and turn it into a piece of crap. my love of the original movie (manhunter) is more than even The Silence of the lambs and I know it’s a better quality movie but I saw manhunter first and it will always be my favourite.

Surprised you didn’t mention that they used the same person for the cinematography as Manhunter. it looks terrible as they wanted that gothic look of silence of the lambs and the star studded cast are awful and there is too much Hannibal in it and that ending was obvious that he did the switch when you don’t see him dying. I can’t say enough bad things about this movie if I did I would be here all night and day and turn into someone like the Tooth fairy.
