Red Dwarf is a British science fiction comedy franchise created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor which primarily consists of a television sitcom that aired on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, and on Dave since 2009, gaining a cult following.[1] The premise of the series follows the low-ranking technician Dave Lister, who awakens after being in suspended animation for three million years to find he is the last living human, with no crew on board the mining spacecraft Red Dwarf other than Arnold Rimmer, a hologram of Lister's deceased bunkmate, and Cat, a life form which evolved from Lister's pregnant cat.
As of 2020, the cast includes Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat, Robert Llewellyn as the sanitation droid Kryten, and Norman Lovett as the ship's computer, Holly.
To date, twelve series of the show have aired, in addition to The Promised Land. Four novels were published from 1989 to 1996. Two pilot episodes of an American version of the show were produced but never aired. The magazine The Red Dwarf Smegazine was published from 1992 to 1994.
One of the series' highest accolades came in 1994 when an episode from the sixth series, "Gunmen of the Apocalypse", won an International Emmy Award in the Popular Arts category. In the same year the series was also awarded "Best BBC Comedy Series" at the British Comedy Awards.[2] The series attracted its highest ratings, of more than eight million viewers, during the eighth series in 1999.[3]
The revived series on Dave has consistently delivered some of the highest ratings for non-Public Service Broadcasting commissions in the UK.[4][5][6] The show has been critically acclaimed, and has a Metacritic score of 84/100.[7] Series XI was voted "Best Returning TV Sitcom" and "Comedy of the Year" for 2016 by readers for the British Comedy Guide.[8] In a 2019 ranking by Empire, Red Dwarf came 80 on a list of the 100 best TV shows of all time.[9]

BBC: Dont make this episode, redo the whole thing Emmys: Have an award for this

And then the BBC doesn’t invite the cast to the award party, for their own Emmy. Pretty pathetic.

My mum isn't a fan but I remember watching Legion when it was first broadcast and she was rolling around the floor laughing for the whole episode. Her biggest laugh was for the "broadcast this on all frequencies and languages, including Welsh" line

I love how they can impersonate each other and sound exactly like whomever it is they are impersonating. That's some amazing skill of working with each other for so long they can all sound like each other in their stories as they impersonate whomever lol

I will never understand why some say Series 6 was where Red Dwarf started to go downhill script wise. Especially as "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" won an International Emmy award and is often competed with "Back to Reality" as the best episode. Plus it was Rob Grant's last series before moving on from the show. Did feel different when Doug Naylor either handled the scripts solo or co-wrote with new writers.

Yeh it gets bungled in with 7 & 8 as "The season they changed stuff and it didn't work" when its honestly one of the strongest series they did

Chris Barrie cracks me up in these documentaries. I can't tell if he's playing a character, he's got this weird almost Rimmer-like pomposity going on sometimes

What always annoyed me in that last episode was: Did Rimmer blow up the time drive and therefore save them all, or did the other ship destroy them and thus save them all. In the next episode, Lister says "they killed us and destroyed everything on the ship, including the time drive", so Rimmer shooting the time drive was pointless then...?

It was one of the best series they ever did, but you could tell that the writing tensions were already there. Emohawk: Polymorph II is a fan service episode, completely shamelessly so. The polymorph, Ace Rimmer, Duane Dibbley, GELFs all come back for a 'hey, remember that?' and it really isn't very good. Danny was right, it's more like something you'd see in an AMERICAN sitcom...

Series five was amazing in every episode. The first three of Series 6 are at the same level. Then about midway through episide 4, you're right, it's like the writers weren't working so well together. The fan service carries the end of episode 4 but it could have been much better. Then the lack of originality continues in ep 5 which is a rehash of Terrorform conceptually. And 6 is just a mess with a few good sequences. None of the last three episodes are bad at all, but you can see the cracks compared to the incredible previous 9 episodes.

Series 6 for me was when Red Dwarf was at it's peak and never really recovered from this point. Everything in this series was classic Red Dwarf. Come Series 7, it seems Doug Naylor had disappeared up his own arse, when he wanted it to look like a movie, no audience, single camera, recorded laugh track and the move to more comedy-drama style. Very pompous attitude.

This was the last series that felt like classic era Red Dwarf. Doug Naylor was the sci-fi brains, Rob Grant was the humour. The show never recovered from losing him and it's just not funny any more.
