It looks amazing. I told myself the only way I'd ever replace my Komodo would be with another RED camera, and what they've done here pretty much fixes all the issues I have with the Komodo. Better low light performance, more frame rate options, better port selection and the built in v-mount. It's basically the perfect film camera for my needs. I'll be replacing my Komodo with the X in the next year or so 100%.

It's on the roadmap, but not for 2025. Next up are the R5 II and R1 as that is what my audience wants to see. Then after that, showing them what a cinema camera can produce would be a treat.

Hey! Back for a second after what has been a hectic year so far! Been so busy, but I got my DJI I spire 3, MP 3 Cine which I used to film some of the DJI commercials actually. I’ve had my Z8 for like 3 weeks now, pretty much the same as the 9 and I prefer a grip so no change for me but the z8 will go on my cine cam carrying drone easier so that’s actually great for my big wave footage. Just wanted to say that as you know I have a RED V Raptor and Rhino s35 and I have had hands on with the KX and mine will be here next week. Honestly, you can get so much better for the money and you’ll need to spend more than 10k because you need the accessories and RED love to rip you off on those. I got mine pretty cheap (trade price) and it’s a tax right off so no biggie for me, it’s a great cine cam but you can get a better setup for your needs (both studio and run and gun) cheaper albeit without a global shutter which isn’t all that anyway. Still waiting on my RED monochrome which is what I really want to use because the image is incredible. I’ve gotta go away again for 2 months but my dream camera will be mine next month! I have brought an Alexa mini LF and 2 prime lenses! I’ve been using one a lot lately and it’s honestly godly, I love the image and everything about it, it’s a decent investment for me especially as I’ll make half the cost of it back this year alone just from renting out my REDs. If you got any questions just ask and I’ll reply when I peak in again, ow and get ready for Sony this year :) Ow and I’ll be permanently moving to Las Vegas in December so who knows maybe I’ll pop over to Canada next time the UFC is in town!

I wonder how many years before Canon/Sony/Nikon will have affordable cameras that can shoot like this Komodo X. May be not that far away when we consider the incredible progress made with video in still/hybrid cameras in the past few years.

Perhaps. But from what I hear, there is no mention of a global shutter with any of them. Rolling shutter isn't bad with some, but still this is at a level I would like to reach in a few years.

well, affordable I don't know if it is the right word! 😂 I love RED's yes I do! Specially for nature/wildlife! But Komodo X is not cheap! Adding what you need it gets you a price tag of between 12K or 15K! for 1/2 extra dynamic range value??!!! I love the fact that has higher frame rates but.. lets be honest: even though RED colors are a beauty, (no doubt!) You can get very close with a Sony FX3 (external recorder 16 bit color!!!!!) and 4k/120. for under 4k$!!!! Same with the R5C, (a bit more expensive than the FX3 yes.. but still: 8k/60 fps!). I rather get a used Gemini or Dragon.. even a used Helium!!! I think they can get away with it, because the funclub cult following 😂 which is fine though .. as I said; I love RED's but nahhhh a bit too expensive for what it offers... also, if you know what you are doing with exposure and light: the BMPC ^K pro is a little beast shooting 6K Braw for $2500!!!!! ;D. Yes it will.. both ST and Black will be $10k. When OG Komodo came out the white one was 1,000 more.. this time they are the same price.

Excellent question. The answer is simple. The rumours for the R5 II alone will pay for the camera. Coverage of the live event will pay for the camera four times over. Coverage of the camera's capabilities for two months after will pay for the camera again. Simply put, far more people are interested in the R5 II than the Komodo - just look at the views. Fore the channel, the R5 II is a better investment, as is the R1. I could easily generate 50% of the channel's income from the R5 II and R1 and add 10K subscribers ;) The Komodo is for the pure art of cinematography. It's about producing the best I can do with the budget I have.

Seem more like a Komodo mark II upgrade than a tier-above kind of upgrade. The increase in price is $4000. Man. I understand it's Red but logically it's tough to justify. But anyone who buys Red never justifies their purchase logically.

Yeah, its an entry level cine camera, but not still not cheap for the ordinary filmmaker.

It’s a crash cam because it was made to be one. A company that makes 15k, 25k bodies makes a 6k camera with similar color science because it was made to be blown up on set. KZbinrs made it into an A cam because they saw it as an entry into the red ecosystem. This one was made to be more of an A cam, thus the frame rates, improved audio, locking mount, and built in vmount solution.
