Very cool video and what an amazing job you do keeping them! I just recently acquired some rainbows for the first time, and I have fallen in love! I got some pseudomugil furcata and 3 gertrudae. I think you are correct about the coloration - with good husbandry, live plants (especially moss and feathered plants used for breeding), and a proper diet they become MUCH more colorful than any picture I have seen online. My alpha male furcata has become so colorful that he has a vibrant red-tipped dorsal fin which I have never seen in any photo or video. Cannot wait to breed them!

Hey michael, great video. Wanted to ask some question if its alright. I just got 10 luminatus and its already been 3 days but they still refuse to eat? Sometimes they nibble and spit out the food and swim away or they just dont care about the food at all. I have tried pellets, flakes, and frozen bloodworms. Is this behaviour normal? I dripped acclimated them for 1 hour before putting them in my aquarium and my tank is very heavily planted.
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium Жыл бұрын
Sorry about the late answer, William. That is definitively not normal. When I have fish acting like that, live food seems to cheer them up adn start them feeding. Newly hatched brine shrimp is a favourite food for my Luminatus. Cheers, Michael :0)

Hi dshizzle, I said Australia and New Guinea, but it may be imprecise, since I seems that Pseudomugil luminatus is currently only known from south-central New Guinea in the vicinity of Timika, West Papua. At least as it's natural habitat. So Australia is not correct. Thanks for your input. I will correct that in my text (though not in the speak). Cheers Michael :0)

Beautiful little fish. I keep Pseudomugil Furcatus in a 20-gallon high tank with celestial pearl danio, clown killifish, and endler guppies. My tap water is quite hard, so I add some peat moss to the HOB filter. They all eat flake food and baby brine shrimp. I have lots of fry, but I need to wait until they grow out to see if there are anything besides endlers reproducing.

Hi Brian. Sounds like a great combination of cool nano sized fish in that tank. I see the the Celestial Pearl Danios entering my fish room someday soon ;0) They look fantastic. @MichaelJensensAquarium

You can do that, but you will only find a small part of the eggs. Might be better to catch the newly hatched fry in the surface, and move those to another tank. But the most effective way is the one I discribe in the video. Cheers, Michael :0)

Hi Justin and Kelvin, I feel that the most important factor in getting that deep red coloration in this species is lots of small live food, small daphnia, copepods, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp. But that being said, a dark substrate helps a lot. My fish loose some of the glow, when kept over a light substrate. Good water quality and lots of plants doesn't hurt either. Cheers, Michael :0)
