Great video Nick, I noticed spending time with you at the shop last week that these were really popular, It's good to see! all the pseudomugil species are really easy to breed like this, it also surprises me that they can be so hard to come by in aquarium stores, people will go for the more high end stuff like L numbers when they see the dollar signs but in my opinion as nice as they are you never really see most of them and you can wait years to breed some of them, I can understand the collectors value in them but to the general public they can be quite boring were with these they continually dance around the tank, they are pretty easy going in the most part with the exception of maybe a couple of the more salt water species like Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis that are also easy to keep but can be a bit more of a challenge to breed for the average keeper that doesn't want to play around with water conditions, most of these still pick up good money in the hobby and basically breed like rabbits, with space being an issue with a lot of people these days these beautiful little nano fish in my opinion are the way to go, some of them can be easier to keep then guppies and some native species can handle a wide range of water conditions and temps, such as the Pseudomugil signifer, Pseudomugil mellis, and some of the southern forms of Pseudomugil gertrudae, I have kept these all in ponds year around in Brisbane, a great little fish! 🙂

I just found my first dozen free swimming Gertrudae Aru IV in my 40 breeder. Added 20 adults on 8/17 so I was a little surprised to find these guys already. 5 of them are big enough that I watched them eat bbs using a 30x magnifying glass yesterday. Adorable how they have those little blue eyes right from the get-go.
@MrJinngers Жыл бұрын
I've been trying to breed fish for some time with a little success but even if I do succeed and get few dozens of fry to sellable size, nobody wants to buy them... fish shops have their suppliers and its really hard to sell to them. And to sell a bunch of them on local market site is almost impossible in reasonable time. I'm glad I didn't jump head in into fishbreeding because it would've been a disaster
@jjdawg9918 Жыл бұрын
If they are easy to mate then they wont be profitable for long(just like the tropical houseplant boom). I always suggest breed fish that you like and others will like long term. Rarity in the fish and plant hobby is short lived unless they are TRULY difficult to breed/propagate in captivity or sadly short lived...for whatever reason.

Profitablity is separate from rarity. A profitable fish sells out rather than selling high.
@fredgandolfi2356 Жыл бұрын
Well he did say profit. A discus that costs big money to raise and you sell fur big money after waiting fur a customer for months is not profitable. His point is that these little fish cost less to raise, sell faster and in more volume. More people can afford a tank a discus would not fit into, and these little fish are likely less of a pain to keep, feed and medicate. I agree that there is no way the price he quoted is going to hold up. At some point, like guppies, good luck selling them for $5, but even then it's not a bad thing. I would not raise a family on this, it is a hobby :)
@MaybeTiberius9 ай бұрын
you cant really compare houseplants to fish tho. if you are serious about making money with houseplants, you will not grow them yourself because it takes too long, but you buy them in from people growing them with trader conditions and you then flip them as fast as possible and buy new ones. that way plants for sale wont stay with you for long and price changes wont affect you too much. only the leftover plants you cant sell quickly are the ones you grow out yourself as stock. and here is the thing: it doesnt even matter if prices on plants drop. if you pay attention to trends, especially all the new species coming all the time from indonesia and alike, there is ALLWAYS that new hype plant that people pay crazy prices on. you simply switch plants and buy in those that are hyped up until they are not anymore and then you buy the next hyped up plant. however working with living animals and breeding those is a alot more of a slow process and you cant treat a living being the same as you would a plant.

Hey I'm trying with them as well, I've watched somewhere that they in general got low hatch rate, like 50% or so. And in bit lower temps egs got better rates. But I can't confirm it. Once I've hatched 1 egg by axcident putting java moss from those to CPD and in that lower temp tank it hatched and grown up to 2cm before putting it back to furcatus.

Treated 2x with fluke m which is better than prazi as flukes havent built up a resistance to it. Also treated with fritz paracleanse. It didn't help. They continued to poop white. All have died except one female. She is constantly hiding and goes to eat but spits it out, must be eating a little cuz when she does poop its long and white. Ive tried many different foods, still just spits it out. My tank is a 55g planted tank. I have 2 hillstream loaches, 3 otos and 5 chili rasboras and 2 clown killifish and the one last guppy. According to my water teats, everything is spot on. Other fish are doing great. Any advice for my last expensive guppy would be appreciated.
