What is the difference between red and pink salmon? Which canned salmon should you buy? I open red sockeye salmon and pink salmon and take a close look at both types of canned salmon, and then cook up salmon patties with each type of fish. For more canned salmon recipes check out the links:

Thanks for checking out this canned salmon information. I think pink salmon is the best salmon for making salmon fritters and all kinds of fish recipes, but give both types of salmon a try and let me know what you think.

I used to use pink salmon in my patties. I never minded, but my husband only will eat them made with the red salmon. Actually, he prefers red salmon right out of the can. As for the skin and the bones - I eat the bones right away for the calcium. I remove most of the skin and freeze it in a sandwich bag. After I’ve save the skin from a few cans, I give the frozen bag of skin to my son for his dog. “Salmon skin popsicle.”

Hey Buck, this was a good video. I enjoyed your comparisons. I only ate can sockeye salmon one time. I made a mistake at the grocery store and pick it up instead of the pink salmon. I was eating some without cooking or preparing it and the flavor was so much better than I had ever tasted before when eating pink salmon. For me, there was a big difference in taste. Maybe the pink salmon I was eating than wasn't that good or I got lucky and just got a very good can of red salmon. At any rate, it was the best canned salmon I ever ate. Have you ever put canned salmon on the Panini Grill? I do that with canned fish. I will cook the mackerel and sardines and sometimes even salmon after dipping it in a bowl of Italian dressing and water with onion powder and pepper and Italian seasoning. Or old Bay if I have any. The sardines have so much fat in them they become like fish bacon.

The difference between red and pink salmon is most obvious in the fresh fish. Sockeye (red) salmon is so far superior to pink. I would not eat a fresh pink salmon because the skin has a natural slime I find totally unpleasant, although it does go away after cooking. I prefer the firmer texture and deeper flavor of sockeye, although I do enjoy canned pink salmon, too.

One of my favorite meals is salmon and rice. Either type will work. Only a very slight difference in flavor. It's a quick, easy dish to make. Fry bacon until crispy and onions until soft. Add a can of salmon, liquid, and all. Cook through. It doesn't need much in the way of seasoning. Me? I keep it simple, just a little pepper. Serve over rice. Delish.

I was the seafood specialist for a supermarket chain for many years. We often sold wild caught Alaskan salmon that was labeled as a product of China. If you looked closely, the package said processed in Tacoma, Washington. To explain, the ship was caught by a vessel of Chinese registry - usually by American fishermen. It went down the coast to Washington to be processed in a USDA inspected plant by Americans, in America, never entering Chinese waters at all. But the law says that as soon as it landed on the Chinese vessel it must be labeled "Product of China." Go figure.

There's also occasionally white salmon which I think is delicious. There's very little commercial wild caught Atlantic salmon as the fishery is recovering. Wild caught Pacific salmon is plentiful. Farmed salmon is almost always Atlantic whether it's from Scotland, Norway, or Chile. I don't think salmon is caught in Thailand's waters. A propos of that I bought last year a jar of gefilte fish made of whitefish from the Great Lakes. Fine and dandy, then I noticed on the label Product of Morocco! Isn't modern economics amazing, interesting? But then you read Forbes.

This video must have been done before inflation hit. $7.19 for 14.75 oz and $4.09 for 7.5 oz for Sockeye salmon is a good buy. The beauty of the salmon is not in the looks but in its performance - high in vit D, protein, good calcium and potassium and DHA and EPA oils and fatty acids resulting from their cold water environment. A good plus also is that it is wild caught and not farm raised, not to mention their diet of krill and the extreme exercise these fish get.

Farm raised salmon is usually Atlantic salmon, not a pacific variety at all.

Yeah, the wild caught, red salmon looks better to me, and considering the price compared to fresh, hard to find wild caught, it’s a bargain.

Is there no difference in taste? I would think the additional fat in red salmon would make the taste richer in flavor. No?

My sincere sympathy. This is a senseless tragedy. Nobody deserves to lose their life this way. And friends and family don't deserve to lose someone they love this way.

What is the difference? The price! don't care about anything else. A can of red salmon in the UK is now approaching £5. Pink salmon is £2.30. Go figure. And the cans on sale here are about a third of the size of the ones in the vid'.😭

I could understand buying the red salmon if there was a substantial benefit of the red over the pink, but the differences are so superficial...I can't rationalize regularly paying more for the red
