My mom would remove skin and bones from 4 cans. She would add diced onion, 4 eggs, 2 sleeves crushed saltines. She would form the patties and fry in vegetable oil til golden. We ate them a few times per month with cubed potatoes and canned spinach. Loved them then, love them now. Our family of 7 was thankful

4 cans, wow but that's a big family. I use 2 eggs, a little milk stirred together, 2/3 sleeve of crushed saltines, with one can. I think I'll try some Yogurt/sour cream, onion and garlic powder and lemon juice. I use lid to squeeze out excess juice but will try leaving in bones & skin.

My daddy was from Louisiana and he made the best salmon croquettes. They only called for a can of drained salmon, some diced bell pepper and onion a little yellow cornmeal and an egg. He'd fry them in a big cast iron skillet. I can still taste them. Your recipe is a little fancy for me, but different strokes for different folks. Thanks for sharing.

@shrimpymuscles8413

My mother made this occasionally in the 1950s. I loved her salmon patties. She was a simple cook. Her idea of seasoning was salt pepper, and maybe some bacon grease. She kept the canned liquid with the salmon. She crushed the soft bones and broke up the skin and left that in also. Only thing added was 1 egg, flour, and some crushed soda crackers. The crackers still had a variety of sizes ranging from crumbs to dime sized. She used her hands to mix all of it. She fried the patties in a cast iron skillet with hot melted Crisco. I think she made fresh mustard greens cooked with bacon strips, and cornbread ( never sweetened) to eat with the salmon. When I grew up I added yellow onion or green onion. I tried fresh dill, and had to be careful to add a small amount. My children loved the patties served along side of fresh collard greens, and buttered rice that was peppered and had a little salt. I am going to make some today, its been a long time. Ty for the vid.

@@joebb0831 I forgot all about bell peppers, I didn't add them bc one of my children hated them. These days I rarely buy the peppers bc I rarely can finish one. If I plan ahead I will make several things that contain the peppers: spaghetti sauce, macaroni salad, stir fry, seafood salad. Also, I think that by using the entire contents of the can of salmon that you get more calcium and omega 3 fatty acids. I can't understand why ppl remove the skin and bones. Recently I noticed that the grocery store has sardines with the bones removed! I have to wonder what does the industry do with skin and bones. Does it become some expensive food supplement or costly pet food? I wouldn't be surprised.

My salmon patties combine your potatoes in the salmon patty. I boil then mash potatoes coarsely, and mix in with the salmon. It changes the texture of the patties, but I've come to like it. I developed that recipe when I tried to recall how my mom made them, and took my best guess. I don't remember if she used mashed potatoes in her salmon patties or not!

I agree mashed potatoes go perfectly with them. my mom also made a milk gravy using some of the liquid from the can and also she would crumble either 1/2- 1 patty into the gravy while making it, that made it even better. She also crushed the bones and mixed them and the skin into the salmon because of the nutritional value. My patties,, I add which ever I have on hand, crackers or the heal of a loaf of bread or breadcrumbs. Salt and pepper onion powder, garlic powder, splash of hot sauce, 2-3 splashes of worcestershire sauce and an egg.

I just have to tell you I made these 2 nights in a row precisely according to your recipe. I used the second option you gave, mayo, instead of Greek yogurt. The only other exception is that I went a little easier on the cayenne. I just put in a few dashes, I'm very sensitive to heat. They turned out amazing. The second night I made them I used a 1/4 measuring cup to scoop out the mix instead of 1/3 so that the smaller patties would be a little bit easier to handle without them falling apart on me. That helped me a lot, my patties stayed together much better being smaller. My brother who is a very picky eater ate a ton of them and even ate some the following morning, and he NEVER eats leftovers! Tysm for the yummy and easy recipe.

Born and raised in Oklahoma. My mom used to make this all the time when I was growing up. Here is what I do now as an adult. Make two large salmon patties, top with mashed potatoes, corn and butter. Kind of like a shepards pie/kfc bowl.

Canned salmon, bread crumbs, flour, eggs, onions, green peppers, salt and pepper. Mom made these for us in northern Minnesota, 60 miles north of Duluth, in the 1950's. It was a food desert, especially in the winter. I could barely choke them down, because I don't eat fish, but I was very hungry.

My Mom used to make her own bread crumbs by putting bread in the toaster and running it 2-3 times until it was almost burned. Then she would pulverize it in a bowl. We tried your method exactly and it worked out great……the kids ate it all up and they wanted more!!!!! Thank you kindly for your wonderful recipe video.

I too grew up eating these. My grandma lived through the depression and had all kinds of depression era recipes. Instead of mayo or yogurt I add ranch dressing. It gives them a nice tanginess. If I feel I want them really crispy I pat them in bread crumbs for frying.

I loved seeing this video. I grew up with my mother making basic salmon patties. Sher was Irish and French extraction. My husband is Jewish and his mother made them, also. He thought they were a Jewish food; I thought they were Irish. I guess salmon patties are an American melting pot tradition. I still make them today now that we are retired although I rarely made them for the kids when they were growing up and I don't know why. The same with meatloaf. I love the old "comfort foods" of the 50's and 60's and these fit that for me.

How does it smell? Can you please be as specific as you can? I would love to do this because I know the taste already but it didn't smell bad when I had it. If it smells bad I think I'd have my husband cook it while I leave the house lol

@MY ASMR ADDICTION, my mother always used white cornmeal for cornbread, and coating catfish. The cornmeal now is mostly self-rising and seems too salty. I won't buy it. She always used cast iron skillets to fry everything or bake cornbread in. We never had grits with salmon patties. We ate grits every morning with bacon, eggs, and homemade buttermilk biscuits. Whenever there was leftover cornbread, my father would crumble it up in a glass and pour buttermilk in and eat it with a spoon.

When this vid got recommended, I immediately clicked it. My mind flew straight to my childhood when a distant relative would cook these for New Year's Day as a staple item. We'd all gather at her house & enjoy the heck out out of her simple, but delicious spread. I've got more than a few cans of salmon just waiting for this opportunity. Genuinely glad I found it. I never knew how to actually cook it ( or even tried), until now. Thanks! 😊

Almost mother-in-law served them with creamed peas and potatoes. The sauce from the new potatoes (from her garden, not a can!) and peas was shared with the salmon patties. I've been threatening to make these for my sister for years. We grew up with a lot of ham and creamed peas and potatoes. The salmon patties were new to me. And, YUM, btw!

So glad to find your channel. We grew up on pink salmon patties and they are always delicious! Mom had to feed 10 of us and let me tell you...it wasn't easy. We planted food gardens and raised chickens. But we so appreciated dinner! I now have a husband who fishes in the ocean bringing home massive amounts of salmon, cod and halibut. I've pressure cooked smoked and regular salmon. I will definitely be trying this recipe!

Casual Cooking, I made these patties today, and they're delicious! I added some other ingredients. I used 2 small cans of salmon, an egg, garlic salt, onion salt, blackpepper, breadcrumbs, lime juice, La Grille spicy pepper medley, carrots, red and green bell peppers, coriander, oregano, mayonnaise, yogurt, mustard, and some of my homemade hot sauce. I had these patties on a bed of lettuce and some cole slaw for my dinner this evening, and it was delicious! Thank you for this recipe; may God bless you🙏

These look almost exactly like the salmon patties my grandmother made. They were great any time of day, but often we ate them on a biscuit for breakfast. (I can assure the skeptics out there that the bones really *are* soft! If they've been left in, you may not even realize that you're biting into one.) God rest my grandparents.

I still love these. My wife isn't on board but I'll make them just for me. 1 egg, maybe a few saltines for a binder if I don't have breadcrumbs and I like to toss in diced onion and green peppers...maybe jalapeno too. A little tartar sauce or remoulade on the side and that's some good eating.

An excellent pantry recipe, made of stuff you don't have to buy fresh. I make similar fish cakes with tuna and sardines, but I have also made them with fresh fish, just pan-fried and crumbled in the place of the canned salmon. I also like to add grated potato and peas, to give it a nicer presentation.

We ate a lot of these when I was young. Soak 2 slices of white bread in milk. Remove bones and skin from salmon. Add the bread, leftover milk, a large spoon of pickle relish, and enough mayo so it isn’t too loose. Fry in bacon grease, that makes it taste much better…
