Do you have a spacing chart for the dogwood and willows? I didn't see it on your website. I'm thinking of doing 2-3 staggered rows for screening access to food plots.
@big_rock_trees2 жыл бұрын
For shrub spacing, we recommend a double staggered row. The two rows are 4 feet apart, and then the cuttings in each row are 4 feet apart. To calculate how many cuttings you would need, take your total footage a divide by 2! We also recommend ground cover if you are planting rows to eliminate weed competition and help you have a high success rate! Thanks for the comment!

I have a flat open bottomland area that is wet year round. It’s not uncommon for there to be a 1/2in of standing water in places. Could I just stick your ROD/Silky cuttings into that wet ground and expect them to thrive?
@big_rock_trees Жыл бұрын
@chadhouser973 That would be a great area to add either of these two shrubs. Now I would protect them the first two growing seasons if possible otherwise the deer will over browse them! I would also recommend using the 2' cuttings to ensure you make good ground contact is the lowland.

When will they be available for order?
@big_rock_trees Жыл бұрын
January 1st, 2024 and they will ship out after your area's last average frost date. End April-Early May

It’s end of April now…. I’m in MN and it’s been colder than normal years. Is it too late to cut and plant the trimmings? Thanks!

Cut those cuttings before the shrub buds out, and plant them once the ground temperature warms up!

Is it ok to have a few branches coming off when making cuttings or do you just want 3-5 buds with no branches?
@big_rock_trees2 жыл бұрын
We limb the cutting, leaving only the buds because that cutting is using stored energy to create leaves and roots. Sometimes that cutting will not have enough energy to create roots if you leave branches on!

Are these planted cultivars? Usually when i see these out in the wild most of the bark is a standard brown, and the new shoots are a darker red. Ive never seen red that vibrant except for in cultivars in nurseries or landscaping
@big_rock_trees Жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, the reason they are so red is because these are new 1-2 year growth. Once the stems/base are reaching years 4-5 they start turning brown on the bark and lose their vibrant colors. If you were to find a young ROD or Silky Dogwood in the wild, then you will see the fresh red colors especially in the winter dormant months! If they are a younger shrub that has darker red stems, they might be Silky Dogwood as they don't show a true red color compared to the Red Osier Dogwood. A new video is dropping next week explaining a colorful screen line using ROD as a "Red Screen". Stay tuned and thanks for watching!-Seth

Does one work better for browse over the other ??
@big_rock_trees2 жыл бұрын
One isn't much better than the other, they both produce tons browsable material for deer. I would suggest planting both to increase the diversity in your browse areas!

If I trim some of the red osier in one area, can I take those pieces I cut off and transplant those in other areas of the property? Or should I only be taking a top shoot with 4 buds about 18" tall to plant somewhere else?
@big_rock_trees2 жыл бұрын
Yes those pieces are a viable shrub to plant. The top shoots have more buds which will sprout earlier. The lower portions of the plants will take a little longer to bud out. Both parts of the plant work great to plant elsewhere!

Great video. I just found silky and red dogwood on my property. Should i be waiting to make cuttings until later spring when i know i can plant them right away? Im in zone 5. (Northeast)
@big_rock_trees2 жыл бұрын
Cut them before leaf out, then store in a refrigerator with water until May 15th or the ground gets warm enough!
@kevinleary52442 жыл бұрын
How long will your cuttings last without being planted once they get delivered?
@big_rock_trees2 жыл бұрын
We recommend getting the cuttings in the ground asap. If you have to wait a couple days, place the cuttings in about 8-9 inches of water until planting. They shouldn't sit in the water for more than a couple days!
@kevinleary52442 жыл бұрын
Okay thank you. Is it possible to delay my order by a few days?
