I like the idea of a low-mileage but big view hike. Too many times I try to see just how much distance I can cover and miss the out on just enjoying being out in nature. We're all waiting to see what you decide on for your next two-dog tent. It's always good to see the doggies!

Can’t wait, hitting the gorge again in a few months with my brothers. Only 6.5 hours from where I live in Michigan. And definitely going to check out Hanson’s Point this light. The ridge by Castle Rock has been our favorite so far - close to Double Arch too.

Awesome as always. Loved the morning sunrise shots. Rainy weather is always part of the scene and beautiful to hike in the summer. I feel your pain with a tent malfunction. The last couple of years in late April I've gone to the smoky mountains and hiked to a couple of shelters. Leconte and kephart shelters that are not on the Appalachian trail, so no thru hiker crowds. Its nice not having to carry a tent. The grassy branch, sweat hiefer, and boulevard trails are AWESOME. I may do these same trails in April for as long as I live. Hope to make it to Kentucky some day, if not thanks for sharing your experiences there!!

Another video already! You are really pumping out the great trips! Miguel's makes my mouth water. I did my first Winterish trips last year, including a trip to Goblin Valley Utah where it was in the teens at night. Another trip was a backpacking trip to Canyonlands Needles district in November of 2018, where we were not able to have a fire even with the cold temperatures. Just rolling with the punches and enjoying the trips regardless of inclement weather. Excited for Spring and another slew of great David Gray videos! Safe Trails!

Backpacked and hiked many times in Daniel Boone National Forest with my dog Jessie. The dogs are not required to be on leash there. Only if a ranger asks you to leash them and in campgrounds is it required. The main reason I believe is because national forests allow hunting with dogs so they can't require a leash. That being said, I always leash around cliffs and other people/dogs out of courtesy. Great video! Thanks David:)

That's good to know about the leash regulations at RRG/Boone NF, and also the same 'leash strategy' that I use. My dogs are super-friendly and 'social butterflies' but I do understand that some people are scared of dogs in general for a variety of their own reasons (being bitten in the past, etc.), and I always keep the leashes handy.

In my limited experience with freeze dried food as I have been a car camper but now transitioning to back packing, I have tried several meals from several vendors and I will say I love the Mountain House Granola with Blueberries breakfast and I rarely eat breakfast and when I do its a full country breakfast with bacon, hash browns and eggs but after trying this I'm hooked! Its stinking awesome! Not too much. Not too little. Fast. Convenient. Love it! Oh and yeah I'm also a fan of the Pack it Gourmet dips and spreads! I can make a couple of meals out of the happy hour pack! Love your vids! Thanks so much for sharing!

Awesome tip here: Look for a pocket bellows from Cabelas or somewhere like that. Its a little telescoping metal straw that tapers and forces air as you blow. It fits in my pocket, very lightweight. You just telescope it out and can stand up and blow the fire to hot really fast. The nice thing about it is you don't have to stick your face down in there and get a face full of smoke. When I do fire building contests with the Boy Scouts, I always kick their hineys with this little gadjet.

I've actually looked at those but just haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I think your comment may have prompted me to do so. I'm heading back to the RRG (again!) in two weeks and it would sure be nice to have the pocket bellows. We took a trip to the 'Triple Crown' on the AT in Virginia a couple years back and Bob pulled out one of those to get the fire going - unfortunately whatever straw he was using made a loud noises similar to a bull moose calling for his harem! The straw was effective in the end, and highly entertaining!

That Nemos seen better days ... It’s probably lost it’s PU coating and once it does that there’s not a lot you can to make it fully waterproof again... I had a Sierra designs tent that did exactly the same thing..... I have a Lanshan 2 tent now it’s a similar design to the Nemo but at $90 it’s a bargain.... really enjoyed the video... I was smiling all the way through the campfire banter.... thank you for sharing 👍👍

I know. Finally accepted it on this hike. I had re-waterproofed it with some spray stuff after the 2018 RRG hike, and this was my first experience with it in the rain. It didn't work. But it's sad.... the Nemo was my very first gear purchase back in 2009, and it's like losing a family member, but it was pretty miserable in it both nights. Time to move on to a new tent. Someone else recommended the Lanshan - I plan to check it out.

Oh man, the air pump thing is a revelation. We talked on another video briefly about the Z6 and the "wobble"; I rented one last week for an interview and decided to turn off all the IS and I think you're right, it doesn't seem to do it at all in video, but obviously needs a bit more experimenting to make sure. I hear there's a firmware update coming soon to do more AF stuff, but maybe there will be a fix...

I haven't contacted them because the tent is from 2009 and has lived a very long life, but it probably wouldn't hurt to get in touch with them to see what they say. Maybe a discount on a new tent?!

There is only one type of Endurox R4 that I'm familiar with, but if you're talking about which flavor I drink it has always been lemon-lime. Carl had some grapefruit flavored Endurox on one of our trips, that I tried, and it was (in my less than humble opinion) nasty!

I live in the Cincinnati area and have hiked Red River Gorge a lot of times. I was looking for somewhere different that was still relatively close. I have been researching Lake Monroe in Indiana. Have you ever hiked here or do you recommend a trail here for a weekend hike?

I have hiked out to Lake Monroe. That is in the Charles Deam Wilderness, and there are quite a few good hikes in that area (Google 'Deam Wilderness trail map' or something similar and I'm sure you'll see many options). In fact, the first backpacking trip I ever did in 2010 was on the Peninsula Trail out to Lake Monroe. If you do some digging down to the end of the list of videos on my channel you should find it, to get a better idea of what it's like. It's 5 miles out to the lake from the trailhead, and there are a ton of campsite options (people boating use that area for camping so it is fairly well 'developed').

I have driven to Virginia to hike over a long weekend but it is too far for an overnighter. I'm going to try the Sheltowee Trace trail in Kentucky sometime soon too.

A few other trails in Indiana relatively near Cincinnati that you should look into: (1) Knobstone Trail down by Louisville (awesome - done it multiple times), (2) Adena Trace Trail near Brookville, IN (a loop trail around the Brookville Reservoir - haven't done it yet, but want to), (3) Adventure Hiking Trail - a 20+ mile loop trail in southern Indiana right on the Ohio River, west of Louisville, that I've wanted to do 'forever' but haven't yet, (4) Two Lakes Loop Trail, southern Indiana just west of Louisville- I did this trail with my son, Christian, quite a few years ago (I did a KZbin video of the hike). There are also a ton of trails in Ohio close to Cincinnati that I haven't hiked and am not familiar with, but you should do some google searches.

I plan on doing the Perimeter trail this weekend at Lake Monroe. I meet up and hike with someone I met on the Appalachian Trail and he lives in Louisville. Most of the trails you mentioned would be close enough for both of us. I like the idea of exploring different trails. I do have a couple of backpacking trails near me in Clermont County which is just east of Cincinnati. The trails are good enough but I have hiked them a lot.

The weather app that I captured in the video is the 'MyRadar' app - free version. I think there is a premium version too. I also heavily use the NOAA Hi-Def Radar Plus (premium) app but for 'telling the weather' story on the video the MyRadar app just seems to be a bit more video-friendly, plus it has this cool timeline histogram feature that I really like.

I used my ancient (2009) Nemo Meta2P on this trip, as well as the February 2020 RRG trip, but I have now basically 'retired' the old Nemo. The waterproofing on it has now completely failed, and even though I tried to re-waterproof it with some silicone spray it really didn't help the situation. I've since purchased a Zpacks Triplex as my 'dog tent' and I was hoping/planning to use it on both a March Dolly Sods trip as well as an early-April Appalachian Trail trip but sadly both trips had to be cancelled due to the virus issue that we're all dealing with right now.

It's Nedo instant whole milk powder. Where I live (Indiana) I find it in the Mexican food section of Walmart. Buy the yellow can version, not the white can version - the white can has additional additives to make it baby formula.

Normally, I would say the cheese spread is from Packit Gourmet (www.packitgourmet.com) but on this trip when I went to pack up the food bag I found I had depleted my supply of Packit Gourmet spread (oops!). So we went with a variety of 'pre-fab' spreads, all of which were really good. The Schill Brothers brought in canned Fritos-brand jalapeno cheese dip, and I brought in 'President'-brand horseradish-cheddar pub cheese plus a Meijer-brand 'four alarm' spicy cheese spread. All received rave reviews from the crew, probably helped a bit by the setting!

Yes, I'm very tuned in to the COVID 19 concerns. Just a truly tragic disruption to so many people and events currently. I'm hoping it doesn't turn out to be a 'wrench' in all my 2020 plans but in the general scheme of things, I'm certainly willing to roll with any 'punches' the virus throws my way,. The trails will always be there, so no sense in risking my health or anyone elses.

I actually have another trip planned to RRG in two weeks as well! Maybe we'll meet on the trail. I'm going with 'All Things Outdoors' and 'Backpacking with Jason' and I think we're going to be in the Indian Staircase area. After that I don't have any firm plans, and much will depend on my luck in the various permit 'lotteries'. I'm going to apply for permits for the Enchantment Wilderness (WA), Wonderland Trail (WA), John Muir Trail (CA), and Glacier National Park (MT) - I won't hear back on results until mid-March to mid-April. Travis and I are also talking about a Sierra Nevada hike in July, and I've talked with the Schill Brothers about joining them on a Desolation Wilderness hike in early September. Travis is also planning hikes to Dolly Sods (WV) in March and the Cranberry Wilderness (WV) in April - and I'll likely tag along for at least one of those hikes. Oh, and I always plan on an Appalachian Trail section hike in early to mid-April, and a Colorado hike with my son, Christian, in August. Whew... I'm guessing all those hikes won't happen, but it is starting to look like a pretty full 2020 hiking agenda.

What do you use as milk in you breakfast cereal?

I use Nedo instant milk powder (whole milk powder). It tastes great (a little like half-and-half, pretty 'rich') and you can use it for anything where milk or cream might be good. Where I live in central Indiana I find it in the mexican food section of Walmart. There are two different types - white can and yellow can - make sure you get the yellow can. I think the white can is formulated more as a baby formula powder with various additives for that purpose.

I really like the Flash 55. I actually bought it as a 'stop gap' replacement for my blown-up Zpacks Arc Blast pack, just prior to the 2019 Yellowstone trip (main load bearing shoulder web strap tore through the anchor point - not repairable, at least by me), and I thought it would be a 'one-and-done' pack, but I loved the way it carried the load on that trip plus it has tons of storage space, pockets, etc.. It weighs about 2 pounds more than I prefer, but for now it's going to remain my 'go to' pack.

Any reason you cant just use a bear canister in that area?This was the first place I looked at when I got interested in backpacking. I watched a video by AdventureArchives. They went out to that point on a beautiful sunny day boy oh boy that view... I intend to visit here sometime. You could certainly use a bear canister, but they aren't required and would add 2-3 pounds for just the canister. You will love the Four Pass Loop - at least the scenery, not sure you'll enjoy the crowds! Keep an eye on snow depth reports because June is really early to do that hike - I was concerned we might have snow problems in mid-July! But it all just depends on the snow depth for any particular year (I'm not sure what 2020 has been thus far in Colorado). I have never hiked the Adirondacks, but have always wanted to. I need to do some northeast/New England hikes!

The Zpacks Hexamid Solo Plus is still working like new. I just don't take it with the doggies, for multiple reasons. The Nemo had been great until the 2018 trip, and it has an extra 'pawprint' floor that is fantastic for the dogs, but I finally realized on this trip that it's life expectancy has expired! I'm on the hunt for something new - and dog-friendly.

I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure that guy was wrong about dogs. These are the 2 rules I found.... it is true at a developed campground (ex. Koomer RIdge) they need to be leashed but I don't think that's true on trail or in a back country campsite. DB-02-15. • At developed campgrounds, bringing in or possessing an animal, other than a seeing eye dog, unless it is crated, caged, or upon a leash not longer than six feet, or otherwise under physical restrictive control. 36 CFR 261.16 (j).

HAHAHA You guys meet up, Park, hike for a half mile and then set up camp? Seems like you guys almost get far enough away from civilization to where you can't hear the traffic. Maybe On the next hiking trip you can camp in the parking lot of the Outback Steakhouse. I don't think you're going to have any Deliverance nightmares.
