I'm 62 years old and I remember watching Red Skelton as a child. I remember laughing and thinking how funny he was. I just watched this show and my memories have not deceived me. Mr. Skelton you are still the funniest man I have ever watched. When I talk about watching him as a child it has never failed that whomever I'm talking to remembers watching and laughing at all his skits. It was one of the highlights of my young life to sit down in front of the TV and get to watch him perform. He was so talented and amazing. I think I've seen every one of the shows but I wish reruns would come back on. I definitely would be excited and honored to get to see them again. I love him so much. I Thank him so much for all the laughs he brought me. He will always be remembered. RIP Red Skelton we love you

Red was a timeless treasure. It warms my heart now to share this with my own children. I came upon this video while trying to figure out how to play King of the Birdies on guitar, and now it will be a permenant addition to my repertoire. It warms my heart to see comments as recent as yours on such a wholesome and genuinely hilarious classic show. May he rest in peace, and may your glass be always full. Cheers.

I was working the front desk at the Holiday Inn in Carbondale, IL. I knew he was due to check in, but he sneaked up on me. I looked up and saw the biggest greenest cigar held in the huge smile of the man himself. When a celebrity checks in in person you always try to get it done asap. So I was fast. He stood at the desk for at least an hour giving me the gifts of his stories. I asked if this story was true, or a skit. He replied it was true. It's time for the next generation to meet the genius of Mr. Red Skelton.

I remember watching "The Red Skelton Show" when I was younger, back in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He and Jack Benny were my favorites. I don't know if you are aware, but he wrote a letter to his wife every day. She collected them and put them into book form. In 1992, she had 1600 leather-bound volumes of his letters, from when he was courting her until that day. He also had to wear metal braces on his legs since the mid-1960's. That may have been his reason to drop weekly television programs from his schedule. He was a wonderful painter, mostly of landscapes and portraits of clowns. In a 1992 interview, he stated that he was still getting Christmas cards addressed to some of his characters, not him personally.

The thing I take away from all the laughter and the joy from Red's performances, is that his humor came out of a very tough Depression-era childhood; he lost a son to leukemia when he was only a small child; and he lost his wife, early, too I believe. He had his share of heart-ache: but he found the funny side of life and he made others laugh. Funny people are NOT people who don't have heart-aches in their life - sometimes they seem to have more. . .but they get their joy, their energy and their zest for life by making other people laugh. I have been going through some hard things in my life for some years (acrimonious divorce, loss of children due to "parental alienation", severe life-threatening illnesses, unemployment). But you know what? As I go through my day, I ask the grocery store cashier or stock person "wanna hear a joke?" or the coffee barista or the person waiting at the bus stop with me, "hey did you hear the one about. . ." or I am waiting in a long line at the store and a great way to pass the time is to tell someone standing near you a joke. . .you just wouldn't believe how happy people are to have someone make them laugh. One time I was at Costco and a man ahead of me was very upset because he didn't have his debit card with him and was struggling with how to pay his bill. I sidled over to him and said, "Looks like you're having a rough time here. . .would you like to hear a joke?". So I told him a joke or two, and he was SO grateful! So I think Red's best lesson for us is to carry on his legacy of trying to lighten other people's loads - THEIR LAUGHTER gives you joy in return -- you BOTH have more joy because you stepped out, wanting to lift them up. When I feel down and I tell a joke to someone and experience their laughter, you can't believe the difference it makes in me. Actually, it's kind of selfish of me, in a roundabout way, because I ALWAYS feel better making people laugh. . .God bless all of you who love Red, may laughter "bounce back" at you, too.

From the incomparable Pio Nock and self made millionaire Capulina to the nearly unknown Tin Tin Lopez and his rival Mario Preciado "Platanazo" each the owner of a small circus.
