I'm only used to seeing grey squirrels so the first time I saw a red squirrel was in a video game in the background and when I looked it up I was surprised to see they actually do look like that and that they were smaller than a grey squirrel. I see plenty of grey squirrels so I know just how agile they are..and how mean one threw a nut at a friend of mine for passing too close to the tree it was in.

Just pointing out: the species known as "grey squirrel" in the UK is the "eastern gray squirrel" in North America, distinct from the western gray squirrel (which has not crossed the Atlantic).

Yes thats true also, my comment was a rule of thumb. And yes genetics and type of animal do play a big part in it. After all some humans live longer than others as well as giant tortoises who live over 100 years. All in all, poor squirrels!

no you wouldn't expect a clever animal to cheat. in fact it shows it's not cheating or even perceiving the game - it's just sensing a load of structure and food. given it sensed this and still decided to follow the game rules as if it knew all the reasons why humans were doing it etc well then it would practically be as intelligent as the narrator of the documentary.

This level of problem solving seems more than the average cat and dog could manage quite frankly. We tend to think about all rodents like mindless pests like insects, but that definately isn't the case - especially with squirrels.
