awesome, have fun and for pants, I just do random folds... sometimes I will do a spiral, accordion fold but mostly I just scrunch them.... there is not as much fabric to work with to get too fancy... main thing if they are thick like jeans is to use a lot of dye and open the creases to check for white spot that may nee dye

Thank you and no I do not... you want the dyes in there so they can bond to the cotton fibers .... If I have added too much dyes (meaning there is dye dripping out when I pick it up) ... I will lay the tee on a clean dry rag to soak up some of the excess dyes, then I put it in my tub on a rack to batch... any other excess dyes can drip out ... here is how I batch my tees : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM

So does this Bluebird make the color into a Sapphire just like on your Shirt for doing the Fourth of July simple pattern.
@MrTieDye

the Sapphire is a little darker share of blue than the bluebird in my opinion... if I were to use it for flag designs, I would probably add some Cobalt or Black to darken it up just a little bit.... but I have not done that yet

How do you make a red and black spider tie dye shirt with a yellow spot for a softball?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
I would fold the tee in half and draw the half circle just the front of the tee, or front and back... pleat and tie the circle ...... then pinch the circle that you just folded and twist the rest of the tee around it... this is the twisting for the spider design... once it is twisted, I would pull the circle part up and then tighten the rest of the tee and tie it then you can dye the circle part in yellow and dye the rest of the tee in spider design like normal .... have fun!!

How do you wash the dye out after the 48 hours, so the dyes don't blend and turn the shirt pink?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
I start with a cold rinse in the sink to wash away the soda ash which is what activates the dyes... after a good cold rinse, I turn up to warm and rinse some more, then I toss in the washer which I have filled half way with hot water and have added Synthrapol soap ... it is a pH neutral soap, so it helps to keep the dye particles suspended in the water rather than going into the tees and back staining them ... some dyers use Blue dawn Dish Soap in place of Synthrapol as it to is pH neutral One more thing I have done when I have a lot of white in the tee is to rinse in the sink like I said, then dunk in a pail of cold water which I have added a cup of white vinegar... it is acidic so it neutralizes the soda ash... OR, basically it balances the pH to a middle level (Procion Dyes need a high pH of around 10.6 - 11.0 to activate and bond with the cotton fibers) Here is my wash out process : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you ... I use Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I buy most of mine from Dharma Trading Co. www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html I have also purchased the same kind of dyes from Custom Colours in NC and Grateful Dye in CO. Here is a video on how to mix the dyes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXfNY2tviZt1jMk I start with a tee that has been soaked in Soda ash, that is what activates the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash. Here is how I mix or make soda ash: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWUfoZ4Zdh0j5o I leave my tie-dye tees to batch for a minimum of 24 hours, but I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours. This give the dyes more time to bond with the cotton fibers, which mean less dye is going to be washed away and the tees will be brighter in color. 70F is a nice temp to batch tees, I also like to add some heat during this time. So I batch my tees in tubs/bins with a lid. I stack them next to a heater vent in the winter and put them on the shed roof in the sun in the summer time. The heat helps speed the batch time, but I still leave mine for 48 hours. Here are the bins I batch in: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM and here is how I wash my tees after they batch .... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8

I’m a fan of Spider-man and was wondering if you could give me some ideas that will only show Blue and red with no white
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
I would add the blue dye first and let it settle in for a few minutes and then add the red to the other side ...... and I would open the creases some after the first coat of red to see how far it penetrated and then add a bit more if needed ... you may get some dark purple where the two colors mix some and it may take a few times of doing it to get it just the way you want it, so keep practicing :) and have fun

I’m doing tie dye! I’m going to start selling my creations! I’m currently wearing a shirt that I tie dyed! What’s your advice on pricing? Also can you just give me some basic advice
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
That is Awesome!! as for pricing, that was not my best area of expertise... but what I did was go to tie-dye stores on Etsy or wherever and see what others were pricing their tees at... I tried to find the same quality of tie-dyes as where I felt I was and then used prices similar to those ... When I buy tees, the small - XL all cost the same ... so when I price my tees, I kept it simple... I priced the same design on these sizes the same rather than a different price for each size... then I bumped up 2-3X by $5.00 and 4-5X by $10.00 to cover the cost of the extra cost of the tee and more supplies used, plus time .... if I did a more detailed deign, then I bumped them a little more ... and yes you can ask more questions here, but ask a new one, do not reply as I do not get notified of replies to questions ✌🏻 you can message me through the launchlinks link in the description box of most of my newer videos ... or tag me on FB or IG to ask more questions ✌🏻

How do you keep color from spreading to the white when you rinse?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 5 жыл бұрын
I batch for 48 hours for one thing... allows more time for the dye to bond, but also, the dye is pretty much spent after 48 hours ...... I start with rinsing in the sink in cold water with the tee still tied .... after a minute or two, I removed the ties and turn water up to warm, then when water starts to run clear, I put in washer with hot water and synthrapol, which is a pH neutral soap ...... so with this process ... when I start rinsing, I can see the color spreading into my white areas, but it is about dead because I batched for 48 hours... and I have rinsed away the soda ash with the color water .... hope this helps

How do you keep you white spaces so white? Do you still soak them in a cold bath or just rinse to clear before you untie?
@MrTieDye

Part of it is how much dye I apply, takes some practice to not use too much or it will fill all of the white ... so I will use plain or thickened water to hold some white space.... NEXT, I batch my tees for 48 hours with heat .... this allows more time for the dyes to bond, BUT... by the time I start rinsing, most of the dyes are exhausted, so there is less chance of back staining .... then I start with a cold water rinse while the tee is still tied up, this washes away the soda sh, which is what activates the dyes, ... then I remove the ties and turn the water up to warm and continue to rinse... during this time I can see the red and blue spread into the white.... but no worries, just keep going.... once the water starts to run semi clear, I toss the tee into the washer, which I have fill half way with hot water and Synthrapol soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they to are pH neutral) ... I rinse the rest of my tees and toss them in.... once I am done, then I fill the rest of the way with hot water and run a short cycle.... once this is complete... I drain, do a quick rinse and then I do two long soak cycle washes in hot water, this time with less Synthrapol soap since there is less dye particles to keep suspended in the water ... this should help keep you white area white here is my washing video to see the process : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8 and one other tip I can give when I have a lot of white space on my tee .... during my rinse time, before I remove the ties... I sometimes will fill a basin with cold water and dump in about a cup of white vinegar ... then I will rinse the tee, dunk it in the vinegar water and then go back to rinsing..... the vinegar helps to neutralize the soda ash 😉✌🏻

Question... I make tie-dye myself and have had a lot of request for these colors, or other designs that have white in them. How do you keep them from bleeding during wash out? I find that the blue especially, will tinge the white areas during wash out.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
for me I find that adding water to the white areas helps to hold some space, but I also like to batch my tees with some heat and for a longer time, this way most of the dye is exhausted by the time I start my rinsing/washing process Here are the tubs I batch in, I stack then near a heat vent, or out in the sun depending on the season : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM and here is my rinse/wash process... I start with a cold water rinse while they are still tied to wash away the soda ash : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8

I have done it both ways, but yes this was just plain water here... it just helps to hold space .... when there are dry areas, then the liquid is going to try and spread in that direction .... so the water becomes my 'white dye' so to speak

I use Gildan Ultra tees or Port & Company tees and buy them wholesale from sanmar.com but you can also find them at jiffyshirts.com and alphabroder.com I like these as they are heavier weight tees and I felt they would last longer.... but I have seen some discussion on FB where people talk about the softness of the tee or like lighter weight tees, so you may check out eh tie-dye pages on FB for more info on why people select which tees and then find the ones that work best for you ✌🏻

i loved the designs! i just did this for the 4th of july but when i went to wash out the dye, all of the color was coming out. i did not soak it in soda ash before starting, but i did not think i had to. Do you have a solution to prevent all the dye from coming out of my shirts?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
thank you. as for the dye all coming out... if you are using fiber reactive Procion dyes, then you need soda ash, it is what activates the dyes.... so I soak my tees in soda sh to start, and then tie and dye them, as soon as the dyes come in contact with the soda sh an cotton, they activate and start to bond with the cotton fibers ... then I leave them to sit for a minimum of 24 hours, but I prefer 48 hours to give the dyes more time to bond with the cotton... also, I add heat to them also, I batch my tees in tubs with lids ..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM then I placed these tubs near a heater vent, or out in the sun, the heat also helps speed up the dye bonding time. Then after 48 hours, I start the rinsing and washing process ..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8 Also, these dyes work on cotton tees, but will not work on poly tees

How do. You keep the white parts white? I find when I go to rinse the shirts after the white parts don’t stay white.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
As for keeping the white parts white on something like this, first of all, I use Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, and in this case I use Fire Red from Dharma, I have found it does not bleed much........ I soak the tee in soda ash, tie it and dye it.... then I batch my tee for 48 hours (this gives the dyes more time to bond) with heat in a tub with a lid so it stay damp while batching... if it dries out, then the dye bonding stops : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM The reason I do this is the dye is almost exhausted after the 48 hours with heat, so there is less of a chance of the dyes back staining at this point.... BUT, I do a cold water rinse while it is still tied up, this washes away the soda ash, which is what activates the dyes, so you want that gone so you do not re activate the dyes ...... then I turn the water up to warm and remove the ties while I continue to rinse.... then I toss it in the washer which I pre filled halfway with hot water and Synthrapol Soap (this is a pH neutral soap I buy from dharma, but some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap, or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they are both pH neutral soaps as well) ..... you do not want to rinse and then let it sit as the dye will start cross staining, so rinse and then directly into the washer.... I finish rinsing everything and then I do three hot washes and check the water on the last cycle and run a forth if needed. Here is my rinsing process video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8 I hope this helps, have fun creating!!

I rinse in cold water to start with to rinse away the soda ash since it is what activates the dyes... then up to warm until it starts to run clear, then I wash in hot water with synthrapol ... it is a pH neutral soap, which is what you want so that any of the excess dyes in the water to do not get activated and stick to your tee .... I'm new to this, do you always soak the garment in soak ash before dying it?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
Soda ash is what is needed to activate the Procion Dyes that I use ..... so yes it is always used ..... BUT, it is not required that you soak before hand... some dyers prefer to do a prewash and then tie the tee while it is just damp with plain water... once tied, then they soak the tee and squeeze out or spin out the excess and then dye as long as you have cotton or other natural fabric, dye and soda sh together before you batch it, then you are good... so sometimes I will wash a tee, tie while it is damp with plain water, dye it and then I will squirt soda ash over top like I am adding a coat of dye, I flip and do the other side and then batch OR, if you are doing Ice dyeing or HWI... then you can mix the dry soda sh with the dry powders and then add them to the tee/tap at the same time ... I hope this helps 😉 and since you are new, here is my Beginner's Playlist : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo lots of tips of tie-dye in here as well as videos on how to mix the dyes and the soda ash

Soda ash is a white powder, also called Sodium Carbonate.... it is used to raise the pH level of the cotton, which then causes the dye to activate and bond with the cotton .... you can buy from a dye house... or you can buy it at pool supply store ..... also, if you have problems finding soda ash, it can be made from baking soda, here is a link to how that is done, scroll down to the bottom of this page ........ www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/bakingsoda.shtml as for pH neutral soap, I know the other thing dyers use is Blue Dawn dish soap, but you can read more about the soap here ..... www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/synthrapol.shtml

it is not required ... but the reasons I do it : 1. when centering a tee or folding it in half, I can match up the seams better : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJvHe4p_fMmmjMk 2. sometimes I used washable markers and a couple times I have had a few marks that did not wash out, this way they are on the inside of the tee 3. Sometimes not all of the dye particles dissolve and they can leave tiny spots of darker color, if the tee is inside out, then the spots are mostly on the inside of the tee those are my reasons for turning inside out ... but I encourage everyone to make their own choices of what works best for them ... have fun!!

How do you keep the white white when rinsing?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
Part of that comes from a longer batch time with heat, which allows more dye to bond with the cotton ... and the heat helps speed up the setting of the dyes, ..... but after 48 hours, the dyes are mostly exhausted, so there is less chance of back staining.... once they are rinsed, I drop them directly into the washer which I already have half full of hot water and synthrapol soap.... if they sit too long after the rinse, they can back stain... so I do not pile up a couple in the sink, I walk each tee back to the washer as soon as I rinse it PLUS, I use Synthrapol soap from Dharma, (that has been discontinued, so Dharma now makes a Textiles Soap, which I will try as soon as I run out of Synthrapol ... some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap, or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral soaps ...... I DO NOT use regular laundry detergent for the initial rinse out as many of them contain soda ash, which can re activate the dyes that get rinsed out of the tees and then back stain in the washer... this is why I use a pH neutral soap. After batching, I start by doing a cold water rinse while the tee is still tied up, this will wash away the soda ash, which is what activates these dyes ... here is my washing video to show my process : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8

Yes, I tie almost all of my tees inside out... sometimes there are little specks of dye that do not dissolve all the way and then they will leave tin spots of color on the tie-dye, but with the tee inside out they will be on the inside of the tee. Also, I use washable markers and pencils to draw designs on and every now and then a mark will not wash out for some reason, so once again they will be on the inside of the tee..... and when I fold a tapestry, I will fold the front of the tapestry to the inside for the same reason. But when you are doing a non-symmetrical design on a tee, you have to remember to flip the image or it will be backwards on the tee.
