Q&A Question; With the massive market bubble for vintage pieces, and subsequent recreations and reimagining of old models, are we missing out on creativity in the watch industry in terms of design and functions? If people are so obsessed with buying and selling older designs, do you think we have we missed out on the next big paradigm shift in watch design, like the submariner did in the 60's, and the Royal oak in the 70's?
@Oozywolf
@Oozywolf 5 жыл бұрын
I think we're in that shift. We might focus on the big names, but the average person doesn't care about this. Go to Khols or a jewelry store and you're going to see Bulovas, Citizen, Invicta, Fossil, Timex, Armitron, etc. You're going to see MUCH more wiggle room there. But watch enthusiasts don't care for the watches that push the boundaries. They're too big, too gaudy, too bizarre. But most people like them.
@Gnomosfortheoffice
@Gnomosfortheoffice 5 жыл бұрын
The watches from last century will always be the best ones. They’re from a time where people actually needed a watch. They were modelled after people’s needs. Today’s watches have better movements and construction quality obviously but they lack charm.
@Dylan-xj8tb
@Dylan-xj8tb 5 жыл бұрын
@BackdriftNightfall you seem to be under the impression that people still buy expensive mechanical watches because they actually need them to keep track of the time. Unlike in the 70's and 80's quartz crisis, that isnt the case at all today. Luxury Mechanical watches are clearly here to stay, if they werent, they'd be long gone by now. People arent cross shopping mech and smart watches, they are 2 completely different markets. People buy mechanical watches because they like mechanical watches and all of the features that come along with them. They dont buy them because there isnt another other option available.
@rockon609
@rockon609 5 жыл бұрын
I personally think we will wait and see. I've been reading a lot about the materials modern watches are made with and how most of the parts will not patina or change over time. The lumes won't discolor, ceramic won't scratch or fade, new paint will stay much longer, watches made today in theory will look new for decades. I'm not saying theres one design or one watch that changes the game, but the introduction of new materials and production methods pave the way for new watches .

I agree with some others, we want to see your personal collection!!!! As for MOD going for the non-chronometer version, I doubt it had to do with military being aware of regular Rolex quality and more with the way public tenders work... They go for the cheapest offer that satisfies the requirements. That's one of the reasons I laugh when watch companies market their watches with "military grade this" and "military grade that" as people who had the opportunity to work for the military know it usually means "the cheapest available" 😄

I don't know about how this applies to watches but my time in the Marine Corps and in Iraq proved to me, that for the US military at least, we got superior quality gear. To me when I distill the purpose and uses of the mil sub into a modern watch the diver 1 is on a short list of todays equivalents.

@TheGreatLoco

Same like Toyota, Seiko is very strong in . . . marketing! Somehow trough the infinite repeating of an army of trendsetters a watch introduced in '96, with dubious connections to Seiko's from early 60's that look nothing like the SKX007, became an icon equivalent of the Submariner. Not sure how they got allowed to use the 007 designation, maybe Seiko sponsored some Bond movies. And the watch may have been good in '96 but is terrible now. The movement shared with $60 Seiko 5 watches can't hack of manually wind and takes few hours to switch the date. The markers are printed and often misaligned, also the bezel isn't often well aligned. The bracelet has hollow end links, and the jubilee copy has hollow mid links. Finally, the second hand has the lume on the counter balance. Some would say that for around $200 one can't expect much, but Orient Mako's are even less expensive and of better quality, being Orient an Seiko's subsidiary. Even the Casio Duro has better quality in several aspects, being a $50 diver watch. One could solve several issues with aftermarket parts, but the truth is that Seiko should have updated the SKX long time ago.

Then 2 years later I saw it listed on eBay and sold for 6.5k. If I'm spending 6k+ I'm not buying Tudor. The 58 is the perfect vintage proportion and a good price.
