Restoration one of the first Rolex watch ever made - antique/historical military silver case

Red Dead Restoration

Күн бұрын

This time I´m restoring an old vintage Rolex.
It has a 0.925 silver-cushion case and is powered by the Rolex 600 handwind-movement. The Rolex 600 movement was introduced in 1922. Based on the stamps on the caseback this watch should have been made between 1923 and 1925. Giving the fact, Rolex was born in 1920, it can be said that this watch is one of their first model ever made.
The watch is in a really bad condition. The silvercase is scratched, the glass is broken, the watch isn´t running and the movement is wobbling.
The hands are not original, the minute hand was cutted roughly to fit in the case. I´m removing the old luminous paint on the hour-hand, polish both of them and re-blue them at 300°C. This was my first attempt on re-bluing hands, so please allow that little uneven result ;)
I need to replace the glass, so I need my little flux-capacitor again.
I´m fitting a new crown and crown-tube, this is preventing the movement from wobbling in the case and adds some waterproofness to the watch.
The bridle of the mainspring is broken, so I´m replacing the mainspring. After everything is cleaned and polished, I can re-assemble the movement with some fresh oil. After that, this watch is in a fantastic beat (+8 seconds per day) again.
I hope you liked this restoration, if so, like, comment and subscribe ;)

Nice bit of history and a nice restoration. Just for a bit of trivia - at this time in its history, Rolex was not manufacturing many (if any) parts themselves. They were buying up parts from other manufacturers, assembling them in-house and branding them themselves, eventually Hans Wilsdorf was able to negotiate with these manufacturers and have them produce parts specifically for his company's watches. Believe it or not, It wasn't until the early 2000's that Rolex began manufacturing all of their components in-house.
@dmg4415

That speaks for how complicated the manufacturing of mechanical watches are, it takes decades to learn the whole process, and if some one does a better job than You, just utilices it for Your own benefit.

The perfection of your work is highlighted even more because of no unnecessary talking - you let your work speak for itself. I also love the fact that you have restored something that is antique - to perfection. I'm so tired of seeing things that are made to last only 5 years and then thrown away. Simply amazing. Very nice rescue of a tired old watch, probably the only thing that I would have preferred to do would be to replace the winder crown with a more period correct or even repair the old winder crown, that being just a personal choice, otherwise a great addition to any collection.
@stevewilliams5428
@stevewilliams5428 2 жыл бұрын
There's something wrong with the watch he repaired. Says 'superbalance' on the ratchet wheel but the balance isn't a 'superbalance'.. it's a bi metallic split compensated balance. The case screw didn't fix the movement into the case. I suspect he fitted a stem tube(glued in when he should have used a friction fit tube) and waterproof crown as this helped fix the movement in place rather then the case screw. I suspect this movement is from another watch case and in the past was married into the case.

You have restored this historical timepiece to its former glory. The provenance alone is evident enough by the movement, and cushion case. Well done!

Besides your brilliant craftsmanship, your cinematography skills are on another level. This is one of the most satisfying videos I have ever seen. And then the time machine. What a fine sense of humor. I can't wait to see your next masterpiece. Cheers!

*I am guessing the hairspring is a lot newer than a century in age, given its healthy amplitude of >300 degrees.* It is just wonderful to see an antique from Rolex’ first days come back to life and look beautiful. THE FLUX CAPACITOR SEGMENT WAS HILARIOUS.

Enjoyed watching this. Few people will realise how well it was shot and edited. It is particularly difficult to shoot well-lit close up. Subscribed.

Great upload, exceptional work! I love that style of watch. Still... Can't get over that modern crown on a 20s oyster.

I'm really trying to think of something that we produce today that will be worth restoring in a 100 years. That is one magnificent watch. Simple and dignified.

If it was from the 1920's there's a good chance that the illumination material on the watch hands contained Radium. I hope you had a well ventilated workspace.

Beautiful restoration ❤️! Guess replacing the crown was unavoidable, unless a new part was machined. Nevertheless returning it to a working condition it’s a work of art.

Does anybody else remember when they was a kid and and figuring out how to take watches/clocks and even music boxes apart and reassembling them was pretty easy?,,,,, then you got sent to school to study boring useless stuff and forgot how cool you were?, I do !.

Fascinating how there are no spring bars, the whole "bar" is meant to hold the band
@Psykel

That was the standard in the first few decades of the wrist watch. The strap was sewn onto the fixed bar, or a one piece strap was used. There were also bracelets that had open ends that you closed around the bar.
