You know one time I came across a particularly stubborn child who even at the age of five while getting punished would glare at their parents and say if they did not want to do something nothing the parents can do would changed their mind and then proceeded to stay that way the parents really did try everything but nothing could get through that kid's thick skull

This is why I'm an advocate for physical punishment in very rare cases. 99% of the time kids can change for the better with a bit of good parenting. But some kids really won't ever listen unless there's some seriously harsh consequences.

I think it depends on how many pairs of $100 shoes she wants to own and what brands. I usually spend that much on shoes whenever I need to replace my worn out work shoes and the good brands that make standing for hours easier cost a bit. Most of the time I just wear sandals but, if I'm going to be on my feet for 8+ hours, I want something well made and comfy. Good brands also have a better chance of lasting longer too.

12:50 I see Lumo's point but do think he's underestimating the ability of culture to shape people. The problem is that american culture is not only becoming more ubiquitous but more extreme as well. The individualism of american culture is increased. Apparently in 2001 while there was the racist aspect americans were able to come together and mourn a tragedy. Now though americans couldn't even stay inside their homes to save others thinking the sick and elderly should just die. Yes, your parents can influence you to some extent, but that isn't total. And seeing from how the parents of the girl in the post say no, I'd guess the biggest factor is like Zen said. A "new" culture of flaunting excess. Which is just the end point of american capitalism overtaking american culture with the ideas of individualism, materialism, and ambition above all else.
