This was my mom’s song to me - she passed away today after a short but brutal battle with cancer. She, at the time, was a single mom with me as her son. We’ll always be each other’s first true loves. I love uou, mom.

Hello jrspurs, I'm so sorry for your loss... That was my mom's song to me as well, and hearing the song again, has me crying... Cancer took her years ago, but this is now my song to her. :) :)

I was 12 when this song hit the radio. So picture a 12 year old kid in 1974 who really only wanted to listen to the Beatles, The Eagles, and The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. And this "schmaltzy" ballad is on the radio... but when she sang that line, "And when one of us is gone, and one of us is left to carry on", that was it... That made me sit up and listen. It is such a beautiful, clever line, it cuts right to your heart. Songs like this are so well written lyrically and melodically, and matched to a singer so perfectly, that they can cut through to anybody - even a 12 year old rock n roll kid.

We listened to this song one last time about a week before she passed. I’ll always cherish this song as I can still hear her sing this to me as a small little girl. Rest in paradise momma. I think I was 6 years old when this song came out, and even then, this song made me cry. When my son was born, I remembered this song. I've always thought this describes my son and I. Even though my mom was a big help in raising my son, I always felt it was he I against the world. He's 23 now, and I'm 53, I'm sick with pancreatitis and a pancreatic cyst, and he's been a big help to me. I just found out this incredible singer died this afternoon, and the world has lost another beautiful singer......r.i.p., Helen, you will be missed.....
