The OF-40 Mk. III is quite well known in Italy! The problem is that OTO Melara (or, I dare to say, Leonardo - which bought it) just didn't care about restoring it.

It's probably because both Italian landscape and the theaters Italy operates in are much better suited for light vehicles than tanks, would explain why Italian IFVs and wheeled tanks/tank destroyers are up to date but not the Ariete

False. The only problem with the Ariete was the lack of the external ammunition compartment and the weak engine(better than the Chally 2 anyway). In the 90s the Ariete was one of the most digitized MBTs in the world thanks to the TURMS system and because it was the only MBT to have a thermal viewer per commander, something that the first Leopard 2a4, M1A1, Leclerc S1, Challenger 2 did not have(2 eyes are better than 1). The armor is known only that it is Composite in the hull and in the turret from the official website of the CIO (Consorzio Oto-Melara) but the data on the material and thickness are not in the public domain. Stop believe in false legends of Italian tank=💩 In WW2 the Italians built good light tanks, excellent tank fighters and a good medium tank(P26) but the problem was the low industrial productivity, not the quality of the vehicles. Fun fact: All countries at the beginning of WW2(1939) had main tanks such as T-26, Stuart, Panzer I/II, Vickers Mk.IV ecc.

WHAT? Are they nuts? Exactly this makes it unique and why wouldn't you put it into your own museum or offer it to one of the bigger ones in the world? This is exactly what a Museum wants to have, a rare or unique one NO OTHER MUSEUM HAS! (and the technology is from the 80's-90's so it can't be disclosure) This is really sad, the Italian Military (or former), Museum or private enthusiasts should rescue it before they cutt it into pieces!

But how on earth could they think that it's useless or not interesting to the public, Museums in Italy or the world (Military Base or Museum) or even enthusiasts who would pay a lot of money to have them in their collection! Politicians involved i bet! A rare and unique piece is exactly what the Museums want to have! Make it look good and put it in front of a Military Base, it won't rost away quickly and the new recruits can paint it once a year! Everything is better than chopping it into pieces!

An interesting topic might be the Panzer 68/88. I wasn't aware Switzerland ever had an active tank development program before it showed up in WOT. Apparently a team was assembled to study tank design in Russia. The result was a very soviet looking tank with a much higher turret to allow more vertical canon movement to benefit a possible alpine war scenario.

Same tank as French, except power pack was changed to a German MTU V-12, and the radiators and climate control were upgraded for desert warfare. Because of the changes to the power pack, the tank also received a new APU. I forget if it got a different transmission. The rest of the vehicle remained the same. That's regarding the base vehicle. There's an add on ERA package that differs slightly from what the French are using on their own tanks.

The UAE did buy a couple of OF-40 but they were not that good I think because they were under armed and under powerd and they have upgraded some to mk.2 .Now the interesting part is what happened next .There was a plan to convert them to IFV but this process had to be done else were the person who told me this said that it was either the French or the Germans that worked on converting it to a IFV he also told me that when it came back to the UAE they tried fitting a BMP-3 Tower . This transformation happened in the early 2000’s.

It was the Belgium company known as 'Sabiex' As far as i know only one OF-40 was converted to the Sabiex HIFV with bmp3 turret, but still very interesting.

Better Engine no matter what. The turret should be 180MM RHA High quality( or High hardness.) in between that should be every 10MM of Depleted Uranium inserts? Their should be a Air Gap or 5-10MM or the new layer of Titaniums and Alloys. Another 100MM. Varying 10MM alloys. Buff it with some Sort of padding. The main Problem I think is I should’ve mentioned a Scutum Shaped Tank Hull. With a Rounded Turret.

Italy used to have the Leopard 1a5, but no modern variants. For modern tanks there’s the Ariete Hitfact mk2, the Leonardo M60 upgrade and there’s going to be an upgrade to Ariete called Ariete AMV. Other than that sadly nothing.

@@gansior4744 The Ariete AMV project seems to be continuing, however we were supposed to have some photos by the end of 2021, nothing has come out yet. Some sources have said 2 prototypes have been completed ahead of schedule but since there’s no photos it’s hard to verify. All I can really say as of now it’s still being worked on.

Hey Red, something I would love your opinion on. About three years ago I recall hearing that the US Army moved close to 1000 M1’s to Europe. They went to Poland as I recall. Then about a year after that the US Army moved 2500 other armored fighting vehicles to Europe as well. Now if that is in fact the case, those tanks could be moved very quickly to counter any Russian moves into Ukraine. You know more about Russian units and their makeup than I do, but aren’t they still using large amounts of T72’s in a lot of those units. If those things go up against M1’s, this is going to resemble the Great Marianas turkey shoot, version 2.do you have any way to guess or know, are those tanks SepV3 versions. I have to believe that Putin is aware of this, would he really go up against this force. Is he really that damn dumb and that callous for his troops lives?

Number one Russia will not invade and occupy Ukraine, 100k or even 200k troops is not enough for this at all especially in the time frame in which they would prefer to end such an operation. Number two Let's say Russian's do invade and occupy Ukraine, why do you for a millisecond think USA or NATO will begin a conventional war (which of course could easily go nuclear) with Russia over Ukraine? Number tree even if such a thing happens neither Russian nor American/nato tanks will be mostly destroyed by other side's tanks. Most of the tanks will be lost to dedicated anti-tank weapons, be it land or air based ones. There will be no Kursk 2.0 nukes will fly much before even a thousand tanks on either side is destroyed.
