Okay, no matter what happened with Seagal afterwards, but I don't find anything wrong with his first five or so movies. 1988-1992 was arguably his "Golden Age" (followed by a steep and drawn out decline of the kind that can only be compared to that of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires)

Under Siege was written by JF Lawton, who also wrote Pretty Woman. Andrew Davis knew the proper formula for a good Seagal movie: keep him offscreen as much as possible, and only have him do "action stuff" when he has to be onscreen. Also cast colorful character actors for the supporting roles. He did the same thing for Above The Law, and that one and Under Siege are considered two of Seagal's best movies. Davis did the same thing for the Chuck Norris movie Code Of Silence too, probably Norris' best. This takes place on the USS Missouri but was mostly shot on the USS Alabama. The Oscars it was nominated for were all in the sound categories; not surprising since the audio and audio effects in this movie are really good. The sound in the scene where the ship drops anchor? * Chef's kiss * The Mad Magazine parody of Under Siege was pretty good. At the end, the stripper is asked what it's like to kiss Seagal and she said "It was like sticking my face into a bowl of mashed potatoes."

@troodon10963 жыл бұрын
It's pretty clear they had a military advisor for a few basic things, like the appearance of US Navy uniforms and such, but the plot isn't the most realistic otherwise. Best advice is either just exercise a willing suspension of disbelief when it comes to the supposed military backgrounds of fictional characters. I did find myself wondering why a Navy Seal that lost his clearance would choose to continue serving in the Navy, or why he'd be allowed to serve even if he was so willing but... this is just a dumb action movie, not a documentary of the life of an actual Navy Seal, so I was willing to give that a pass. This movie twists logic in many more ways than that.

I love moments like at 6:30, the flagrant almost purposeful attempt at firing your weapons to make it MORE difficult to hit your target is a hallmark of Seagal. Why the hell not cross them over each arm to fire in a V-pattern at each wall in a tight hallway? Is he ricocheting rounds off each side to get style points? Probably yes.
@monkchips3 жыл бұрын
Come on, the weapons wrangler in this film must have been drunk for the whole film. Who in their right mind would bring a machine pistol with a 1200 rpm firing rate onto a ship? I suppose ricochetting is a valid idea. 25 rounds a second. So a 32 round mag is gone in 1.28 seconds. That bag he had better hold every magazine on earth to keep up this firefight.

I know it’s been 2 years, but I cannot resist, probably because I use them daily. At 5:53 that is a cutting torch. An actual arc welder fuses metal together, a torch melts it and the handle is concentrated air to blow the melted metal out of the area which simulates the “cutting”. Now you can weld with a torch, but that would be called “braze welding” which I guarantee that is not what he was “doing”. I’m pretty sure you probably won’t see this comment so this was probably a waste of time typing this out but I love your channel, it brings me laughter when I need it most, so thanks

When she explained to him that she was only 16 or 17, Steven replied, "In some countries, that is old enough to be married." That is when Ericka screamed for her Mother and her Mother never let her out of her sight for the rest of the filming of the movie. *UPDATE* This is incorrect. It wasn't this movie or this actress. The mercs had fully automatic weapons and the sailors and marines had no firearms of any sort (the corrupt officers saw to that). What can anyone do against that? The USS Missouri was indeed decommissioned in 1992, and its last voyage was to Ford Island in Hawaii (it's very close the the Arizona Memorial), where it has since been a permanent museum exhibit. Why it would be carrying nuclear weapons on its last voyage to be decommissioned, er... not sure how plausible that would be.

I think this is the point in Seagal's career in which he still had the potential to expand his acting skills and diversify the roles he was playing. Had he remained humble, and smart he could have avoided becoming the clown he eventually became by the early 2000s
@RedEyeReviews3 жыл бұрын
agreed. he should have shown some humility and tried to expand his craft, instead of assuming he was perfect already

At the end, that is one of the worst, cringe-worthy, on-screen military salutes in the history of films. They couldn't have gotten an advisor to spend 5-minutes teaching Seagal how to do a passable salute?
@losttribe30013 жыл бұрын
That was supposed to be a salute?!? I thought he was just blocking the sun from his eyes…. But seriously, you are completely right! You think they could have asked someone working the USS Alabama (the ship used for filming) how to salute properly. Or maybe they did and Seagal, as proven by his career, ignored it!

Under Siege turns 30! Made $157 million worldwide and got nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Sound (it lost to The Last of the Mohicans) and Best Sound Editing (which it lost to Bram Stoker's Dracula) Sold lots of VHS copies too Stinks it's not on Amazon prime video even though it says it's for free on that streaming platform From the same writer who did 'Pretty Woman' Steven Seagal, Erika Elianik, Tommy Lee Jones, and Gary Busey Basically 'Die Hard' on a ship but it became the first film of the 90s to financially utilize the formula successfully Seagal isn't a very good actor but he has his expert fight choreography to make up for it and the villains are entertaining Plus Elianik gets to show she's intelligent than rather be dumb eye candy (she actually was a real playmate in real life) The climax feels a bit rushed and some depth is missing from the script along with subplots that make no sense However it has fun action, good atmosphere making the viewer feel just as trapped, terrific cinematography, good sense of scale, and a decent time killer despite its formulaic structure Good for macho man streamers looking for testosterone fueled thrills

I remember watching this at the appropriate age of 10. For some reason I found the violence in his movies so goddamn overboard and cruel, that it's somehow hilarious. When Steven Seagal for example kicks that dude in the nuts / throws the guy into a running bandsaw? Totally necessary. When Gary Busey spits dramatically in his soup, and that sourpuss face on Seagal? Priceless and got me crying laughing as a kid.

4:16 Extract those stocks, greenhorns! 5:21 SMG =/= "assault rifle." In Russian nomenclature, the AKS-74U is classified as a "submachine gun," but they don't factor caliber into that description like we "Western spies" do. That's kinda beside the point, but an interesting fun fact. 6:18 Upside-down and backwards. Not only should you ought not have the muzzle facing yourself, but you also ought not hold the gun upside-down to load it. Of all firearm formats that use detachable mags, guns with magazine wells in their grips are the easiest (most intuitive) to load. 6:32 He's gunzerking!

Allow me to disagree, AKS-74U literally stands for "Assault rifle, shortened", so it is not classed as an SMG. Although it could be, on the ad hoc basis, due to size, looks, and lack of knowledge.
