Hey RedEye, what the fire department did is 100% normal for a car crash. It's called a standing takedown. If a person is standing and complains of any neck or back pain this is how they are put on that long board without bending their spine. Hope that helps.
@Brian-ic8db2 жыл бұрын
Without seeing the episode in full the part that looks questionable is that they had her stand up to put her on the board. After boarding her they show her sitting with a collar on (I assume they didn't clear c-spine yet). SOPs out here would have us short board her while she's sitting. To make them stand up is potentially risking c-spine.
@Towersheep2 жыл бұрын
@@Brian-ic8db That's how it used to be around here too. It changed to allow those that can walk to get out of the car. Sometimes the pain doesn't hit until they stand. I missed her sitting after. That is strange for sure.

Yes, spent 10 years on an ambulance, and that is actually a common technique. Its called the "Standing Take down" and its usually done with patients who could have neck/spine injuries but are upright when you find them. However removing people from the vehicles without medical responders on hand or a clear and present danger, is a bit questionable.

I was an EMT for six years and that's a standing takedown. We did it a bit differently; we'd reach under the patient's arm, grab a handhold and then, with someone guiding the backboard from behind, walk them down to the floor. So yes, what they did is normal, just a bit differently than I was taught to do it.

I was on a traffic stop once that lasted about a half hour before the vehicle stopped. I was an officer on a military bombing range. It was a Sunday and nobody was on the acces list. I got behind them on a paved road and lit them up with lights and sirens. They turned onto a poll line road that went through an unexploded Ordinance area. Neither of us could drive fast as the road was full of ruts. They finally stopped and they turned out to be university students and they claimed they didn't know I was behind them. Total BS. They got banned from the range. That was the most aggravated I had ever been on a traffic stop.

Asking someone who’s been involved in an accident if they want to get out of the car is an appropriate question. When you’re in a crash, the adrenaline is so high that your first instinct is to get out of the car as soon as possible, you’ll deal with the damage later… getting out of there quickly is number one. When I have felt I can walk, I’ve gotten out quickly.
@mattpatt1992 жыл бұрын
Playing devils advocate here.. i am in emergency services and we are often encouraged not to move them until ambulance arrives as they may have internal injuries or spinal injuries. We only remove them of there is an immediate need to e.g vehicle on fire etc. I guess it would be a case to case thing though.
@doc.resener2 жыл бұрын
you MAY ask for someone to get out of the car, but only after clearing the C-spine. It's not hard, but there's protocol and you need training (and be in your scope of work, specially in the USA)
@mattpatt1992 жыл бұрын
@@doc.resener 100% agree. Here in Australia, you could move someone and if they have spinal injuries or moving them makes their condition worse, they can sue (and believe me it has happened). People have even been sue'd for doing CPR on someone and breaking ribs while doing so. Crazy world haha.
