I've never heard an actor mumble so much in my life. As a filmmaker and someone who has recorded audio as well, I can tell you that the sound man for these Seagal movies must have been pulling his hair out. It's no wonder they probably dubbed his voice in post in most of his films, as you've mentioned. I've actually seen a couple episodes of Seagal's "Lawman", and I can tell you it was a struggle to finish watching them. I find it hard to believe any law enforcement agency would sign off on this kind of thing. The episodes came off as highly staged and were poorly edited to me. I'm surprised anyone green lighted Lawman. Anyway. I look forward to seeing you cover Seagal's movies that are in pre-production right now. Happy New Year. And thanks so much for your hilarious content. Your reviews are more entertaining than the movies themselves.

Amazed that in 2019 there is financing for a Stephen Seagal movie. What is the business model? Direct to Asian flea market? You think you're getting a steal on a $1 DVD, but it legitimately came from the studio? Btw, reviewing the entire Seagal ouvre is an admirable achievement.

I'd hate to be the audio guy on one of Seagals movies. You'd have to crank the gain anytime he speaks since he mumbles so much. I mean, how can you tell if it's a good take? Seagal: bar bar bar motherfu bar bar gonna bar bar you boy and bah bar New Or-LEE-ans bar bar . Director: Umm, good take Steven, but one more for safety? Seagal: No. I'm going to my trailer for my snack. Director: We can bring your chili dogs to you. Seagal: OK, one more take.

After finishing all the reviews for all these Seagal movies, the biggest sin is Orientalism. I'm gonna get really nerdy here and go academic. Orientalism is a condescending Western attitude towards "oriental" societies, which essentializes them into static, underdeveloped societies that are nevertheless mystical, mysterious, exotic, and alluring, but also essentially inferior to the flexible, rational, and superior Western societies. In narrative forms of art, like movies, the "perfect" character is Westerner who culturally appropriates "oriental" ways into their worldview, generally perfecting "oriental" traits better than any "oriental." Seagal does this all over the place, but he's hardly the only one. From Lawrence of Arabia to The Last Samurai, movies are littered with that orientalist racist crap, but Seagal is noteworthy that *most* of his movies have some form of it. And when that isn't there, there's often "noble savage" nonsense directed at First Nations people. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the worst perpetrators of Orientalism think they're not racist. They think their condescending "appreciation" of a limited range and narrow interpretation of Asian culture and art means they're racially progressive. This is *super* common in Japanese martial arts, IME. When I was doing martial arts, several of the people there thought they were learning Buddhism by showing up at jujitsu classes. While I'd never train with anyone doing it, I've met several teachers of Japanese styles who thought that they were teaching Buddhism because they were teaching aikido or karate or whatever. Pro tip: they weren't learning Buddhism (and, indeed, it is my experience when a martial arts teacher says they're also teaching philosophy, they're lousy martial arts teachers, but that's a different rant.) Anyway, Seagal is racist. I think we all knew that.

this is very well written. I view it in a similar way. Its one thing to use Chinese influence in a movie, in whatever makes sense. But when the character comes on screen and a flute starts playing, and everyone is bowing at them, and his character has nothing to do with China, other then he likes it...its like, ok. If those aspects are super important to the character thats one thing, but if he just wants to flex his "knowledge" of culture, its just not needed.

@Kit Bradley Respectfully, your opinion here is misguided on Seagal. Seagal is no doubt controversial, and may not be exactly a nice guy, but his embracing of Japanese culture isn't "pretending" in the least. He's 100 percent engulfed 16 years of his life in Japan and learned from world class Budo teachers, including Morihei Ueshiba's nephew and son, several of his black belt students like Hiroshi Isoyama, Koichi Tohei, etc, as well as dedicated Kenjutsu masters, and spiritual teachers that directly studied with Morihei like Abbe Sensei. This is documented and there are many photos of this in the 1970s. There are world class masters in Japan today that studied under Seagal when he was in Japan (Osaka). And Seagal speaks fluent Japanese, with Osaka accent. It's bizarre to me that people let their blind hatred of Seagal misconstrue his actual legitimate accomplishments.

@@AztecUnshaven You should probably read about Orientalism, then. Most people who are Orientalists are quite sincere in their beliefs and legitimately love the culture in question (or, more exactly, love their very specific idea of what that culture "is".) I never said he was "pretending."

@@AztecUnshaven And I certainly never said he wasn't an accomplished martial artist. He is a far more accomplished than I am, though I'm less mind-blowingly pretentious. Did you know he taught Anderson Silva the front kick Silva used to KO Vitor Belfort! *rolls eyes*

I think Steven Seagal should come out with some down to earth movies. Maybe, as a grandpa who’s granddaughter has been taken by gangsters, etc. and let someone professional well known in Hollywood do the editing and writing for this movie. No more of this ex CIA, FBI, US Marine stuff. Most importantly, he needs to show up everyday with a passion be in his own darn movie

@@MrPolicekarim I was thinking that Steven Seagal could do something similar to the Charles Bronson Death Wish movies, but with the helping hand of competent people in the industry to write, edit, and direct his movies. That said, most importantly Steven Seagal needs to have the passion to show up daily and be apart of his own movie. The main star shouldn’t be getting the least amount of air time on screen. If that passion isn’t in him, he should no longer be making movies.

The only way for these big action stars(from the 80-90's) to keep growing and maintain the public's respect is to hit a point where they just parody themselves, and take on the more family friendly roles. Think DeNiro, The Rock(not 90's but he's definitely realized this and is doing a good job imitating it for himself), Schwarzenegger(thank God autocorrect had his name for me already), Stallone, hell even Bruce Willis was doing this at one point(although more recently he's been fucking up trying to get back into really shitty scifi movies that are too serious) The newer generation just doesn't seem to care enough to take "big badass action stars" seriously, they're really better off just throwing a wrench in and taking the piss out of themselves.

Sorry, one more thing - I thought "I will snatch every mother f23ker birthday" was Seagal's greatest line ever, but the raw unexpected delivery, comedy, and power of his "R-word" line in this film almost made me pee the floor laughing. I still can't believe this is the same guy who did the bar-room fight scene (to include the dialogue) in "Out for Justice" aeons ago.
