Awesome explanation of tides and how it impacts the bite! You've really inspired me to go fish. I've been using gulp to catch saltwater fish in California bays (spotted sand bass, barred sand bass, calico, and halibut). YOU THE MAN JOHN!!

Thanks for this. I normally fish topwater at low light but this vid inspired me to bring out the spook this afternoon in full sun. Caught my first slot snook of the season - 29”. My wife thanks you also, Snook is her favorite fish! Cheers

The Jumpin’ Minnow is a great plug, and a bargain compared to most other saltwater lures, even when you factor in the cost of upgrading the hooks and split rings. I use it a lot up here in MA for bass, blues, and even albies.

Bill Fiora I agree ...it's an underrated plug...been using it in the NE for several years. It's a better slim bait profile than the Super Spooks and is more aerodynamic.

So as I've been stating, I'm totally new to the fishery and the area. Around every third trip I'm fishing totally new water. Obviously I have no idea how much better it was before, but if this is a damaged fishery - wow! It must have been something.

Made me nervous a couple times when you netted those fish and the trebles were still kinda close to your legs. Happened to a friend of mine and i think Elias. Ive had very close calls and i get chills thinking how bad it would be being hooked with a fish. I actually did get hooked once, i bet youve seen plenty. My fish came off just as i got hooked, i carry mini bolt cutters now. Great videos, excellent transition down south.

Yeah I'm going to test cast one of those plugs with a single tail hook and see what it looks like. I'm not a fan of trebles, especially in a kayak cockpit.

Jumpin' Minnow is a killer. Chrome topwater plugs work so well in Florida but not so much in the northeast where bone is best.

Wow, awesome demonstration of the importance of tides. I have a question about early season stripers up north. For the past few days been fishing little neck bay during late afternoon to sunset mid flood hours. Wading middle to back of bay and caught 4 fish on small soft plastics/Gulp up to 24 inches on very slow retrieves and very gentle hits. Also, each time there were schools of large bunker busting the surface at some point, sometimes feet from me. I even snagged one on a fast retrieve they were so thick and I definitely felt them ticking my line a lot. Also probably saw a bass or two roll. My questions are: if bunker are jumping, does always mean bass/blues are chasing them? And, if so, the bass I caught could not possibly eat those bunker, I don’t think. Can I assume there were bigger bass there? And if so, how do I catch them. When I saw the bunker I threw poppers, spooks and SP Minnows at them and my buddy used a 1/2 oz Kastmaster but no love at all. I know you’re not clairvoyant but just would love to hear your thoughts.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 жыл бұрын
No, jumping bunker don't necessarily indicate fish. Scattering bunker do. That said, it's sometimes the quietest bunker schools that have big bass on them. It may be a little early for big bass there, but I'm not sure. Sometimes when big bass are fixated on bunker, it's tough to catch them on anything else.

Thanks John. You’re the best for taking the time. Every little bit helps, not least to lessen the frustration of having fish splashing all around and not hooking up. Your books are awesome, BTW.

How do you compare between the same size bluefish and a red. I I fish both Jersey and the spacecoast of Florida, to me the blue fights more down and around, and the red makes runs. I would say the big blues, but reds get twice the size. And there is no comparison to a striper, even though I love the meat! Great video as usual.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Not that I've done it, but I bet the best comparison is to catch an equal weight blackfish in 2 feet of water. The reds have more stamina than either stripers or blues. They don't tire. They also don't run like a striper or blue.

Curious as to why do you not swap out the rear treble for a single siwash style hook? Trebles are a PITA when releasing.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome question. I'm inexperienced with both the fishery and the lures, so I'm taking lure modifications very slowly. I started out using this plug with the factory hooks to see what the manufacturer intended for action. Then I replaced those trebles with stronger trebles of the same size. I'll test a single on the tail soon and see how it looks. I'm not a treble fan, especially in the kayak.

Hey man how Florida life and retirement I was guessing that the little bit of Chop on the water would be a good thing for you because the water was so clear you said that it was not the best topwater conditions can you tell me why the chop is not good for you when you're fishing topwater in super Clearwater
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 жыл бұрын
Because those plugs are so small (compared to what I'm used to up North) that the chop messes up that nice side-to-side action. I notice that the Rebel is less impacted by this than the super spook Jr., which I fully agree is an excellent plug.
