“One interesting thing about Tutti is that none of her component parts were explicitly flammable, yet she’d often melt other dolls. That’s the part people know about. We never made any Tutti dolls. They’d appear in a pillar of flame behind our plants, never the same one twice in a row. Just suddenly a blaze of blood red flame, almost taking a recognizable shape at times but never holding form for long. It’d appear and then disappear. The heat coming off one would singe off your eyebrows from a mile away. The strange thing is, the heat would seem to retract. And then when the thing disappeared, not a mark was left in the cement. No ash was left behind. Just these dolls. We sold em just the same. We all have to answer for our actions some time or another, but we were young then and were untouchable, we were gods who strode amidst men. That legacy was short-lived.” - Elliot Handler, co-founder of Mattel, from an interview with The New Yorker, 1985. (actually john-stamos-ii, deactivated tumblr user)

If they ever make a Barbie and her Sisters Movie, Tutti and Todd should be the villains. Tutti would melt other dolls and plot the Roberts family’s demise for forgetting her, while the other forgotten siblings; Todd, Kelley, Krissy, etc. will be along for the ride. In the end, Tutti dies, but the others get redeemed, because they weren’t truly evil.

As I am as old as Barbie I remember her first family members. Tutti deserved death since she was demonic. But what is up with recycling all those names? It gets confusing when you actually remember Stacie (the British friend…she’s a favourite) and all of a sudden she becomes a younger sister. Kelly? She has been recycled so many times it makes me think I have dementia. Barbie’s callous attitude to her friends and family is causing ageist trauma.

Such a fun video! I was aware of a few of barbie's more obscure friends and family from a book I had growing up that had a spread showing all the different characters associated with her throughout the decades (as well as friends of those characters like jazz's friend group). Kelly's friends are some of the one I remember best because of the Kelly Dream Club cartoons, and because of this I was very confused when I noticed mattel changed the name of barbie's youngest sister (barring chrissy) from "kelly" to "chelsea" since that was the name of one of kelly's friends (spelled chelsie). I can only assume Chelsie took over Kelly's life at some point through the use of dark machinations behind the scenes (or, y'know, Mattel won't let go of the copyright for certain names)

A note about Kayla that should be mentioned is she also appeared in the 1993 Locket Surprise line with A Teresa face, dark red hair and blue eyes but many including myself aren't major fans of the locket bust. Also in the 90's there was a character named Becky with three releases in 96/97' "Share a smile" , 98' with "I'm the school photographer" And 99' "Paralympic champion which would be her last sadly. She was the Barbie world's first wheelchair accessible doll who seems to have been popular but when Kjersti Johnson, a girl with cerebral palsy, realized Becky's wheelchair didn't fit in the dream house elevator, so she wrote to Mattel to ask if the dream house elevator could be modified to accommodate Becky's wheelchair. After several unsuccessful redesign attempts, they discontinued the doll.

Kira is a Japanese name, so it'd made sense for her to be Japanese. And as an Asian American I'm so used to "what ethnicity? uh, Asian! All Asians are interchangeable!" that it barely even registers on my radar as noteworthy. Almost ALL Asian dolls produced in the US do that, even to this day (see all Chinese/Japanese Lila Yamamoto in Rainbow High and Jade of Bratz). The fact that they picked an actually Asian name is good enough for me. The bar is very, very low.

Having multiple characters are honestly essential for households with multiple kids. I know from experience (had three siblings) that siblings generally have to be forced to share things (I think because, just having to share so many things by default makes you possessive of what you don't "have" to share), so having "your character" to buy dolls of makes sense and keeps the peace.
