I discovered Os Guinness in 1973 when I walked into the Church of Scotland Bookshop in Glasgow Scotland (long gone) and found his first book. *The Dust of Death* in spite of its formidable title is a book of bright hope, for it was a critique of both the establishment and the counter culture. It is no exaggeration to say that this book altered the course of my life.

Thank you Dr. Guinness as well. While I respect his research he mentioned Lincoln “freeing the slaves” in 1862, however he failed to state how the “chaos” of Jim Crow laws were established in around 1865. I wonder how many Gen Z kids know what they were, or are we purposely omitting parts of history for convenience. Also, where was his denouncing of white supremacy from the recent terrorist “chaos” attack in Buffalo? (Not sure when this was recorded). I would love to hear more from him and his scholarly knowledge.

I’m going to challenge the argument that there is a significant difference between a “deocracy” and; a “republic”. “Democracy” is a word of Greek origin, combining “demos” or the Common People , with Kratos which is the rule or power. In other words, a system in which the power of rulership rests with the people. “Republic” is a word of Latin origin, combining “res” which is a matter of , or thing of… and “public” which is the people. There is no essential difference between the two. The Constitution or Covenent is the agreed-upon set of rules by which the Democracy/Republic is governed. It is THAT which determines how the government is chosen, how it represents the will of the people, the limitations on government and the protections afforded minorities. There is no absolute rule - anywhere - that the head of a republic/democracy/commonwealth cannot be called a “King” and must be called “President. Kings can be freely chosen by the People, and we know of many Presidents who have not been so chosen and regarded their position as both absolute and inherited. The difference is not in the title and not how often they face election, but in whether they *function* as a representative of their people. Britain’s Elisabeth II is a very clear example of a monarch who spent their entire adult life attempting to serve and represent the people . It takes a little clear and critical thinking if you are accustomed to just one view on how government “of and by the people” is can be accomplished.
