Thanks for a wonderful profound update. Very handy for me before travelling to Lisbon and Madeira.

Congratulations to the speaker. You did an excellent presentation on the history of the Jews in Portugal. I’m an American, who moved to Portugal two years ago, and I’m always interested in learning about its history. Your presentation was as good as anything I’ve ever seen at a University. Fascinating and informative.

Image at 39:04 the correct name is Pêro da Covilhã, not "Pedro". You should also mention a crucial detail: at the end of the first Vasco da Gama voyage 1497-98, at the end of the certainly troublesome stay in Western India, after fleeing Calicut, Vasco da Gama picked up a Jewish man who was crucial in what happened next. He pointed the Portuguese to Goa, to which they came back to in the next trip. Goa would become the fundamental base for Portuguese activities in all of Asia.

Cristóvão Colombo used the Portuguese caravels on his voyage to what he thought was the direct route to India going west. At the time no one in medieval Europe knew about the Americas and he ended up somewhere in te Caribbean (Isla Hispaniola, presently the Dominican Republic). He was married to a Portuguese lady, daughter of the Capitão Donatário of Madeira Island and lived with her in the Island of Porto Santo for a few years.

When Colombo returned from his first voyage to the America's in 1493, supposedly due to a storm, he and his ship ended up in Lisbon, for repairs, bedore going back to Spain, Hearing about his arrival, Kinh João II, who was resting in a small place north of Lisbon, called Vale Paraíso, sent orders for Colombo do go there and meet him, So Colombo travelled the 50 kms to Vale Paraíso where he stayed with the king for about a week. To this day nobody knows what they discussed. Nowadays the Village of Vale Paraíso has a memorial and an exhibit referring this event.

I'm portuguese. Thank you for this little kown piece of our shared History which had some pretty dark aspects to which we're now coming to terms with. I hope jews find in Portugal now a sanctuary from persecution and feel safe living here.

The inquisition of the catholic church did not affect only jews: it was a cancer in portuguese society which decimated creativity and initiative at a time when it was most needed. Portuguese jews were the perfect people to help with the business which resuted from the new commercial routes being set up. In fact, many who went to Amsterdam and New Amsterdam (today New York City) greatly helped the Low Countries in becoming a competing centre of commerce in Europe. While Portugal became a catholic zealot country, following the example of Castille.

The Jews of Portugal were black and not white yes it's a historical fact. Many of the Portuguese black Jews were sent to Africa.😅

You should mention the totally indamous killing of Jews in Lisbon in 1513. Lisbon has recently erected a monument referring that infamous event which was a dark day for portuguese history.

Salazar was not antisemitic at all unlike Franco. he even wrote about Racism and his best friend was a Portuguese jew , He was however against zionism . He understood its division and he also was proud of the Portuguese Ultramar colonial empire , which was diffrent from from the other colonial empires. In the new Ultramar empire everyone now was Portuguese and had citizenship rights and property rights equally.
