Everyone knows fridges are nuclear blast-resistant. That's basic science. That's why I made Stephen put it in, since he didn't like my idea of Indy dying and becoming a force ghost teaming up with Hayden Christiansen to help Shia LaBeouf fight aliens.

“In real life, he’d probably contract some weird foreign disease” The memorable time-honored scene in Raiders where he shoots the sword guy exists purely because Harrison Ford didn’t want to perform an epic fight scene due to his _dysentary_ that he caught shooting the scenes in Cairo
@aspie182moo54 жыл бұрын
Also, Harrison asked Steven if there was a way they could shorten the scene. Steven's suggestion, just pull your gun out and shoot him, got everyone on location laughing. So they went with that. The scene is also referenced in The Pirate Movie. The swordsman in that shows off his "skill" a bit more dramatically, and the man who shoots said swordsman looks nothing like Harrison, but the film and that sequence is bloody hilarious.

Mr. Plinkett does have a point about the aliens: it would have been far better if the plot was centered around an ancient artifact from Russian Orthodox, Mongol, Siberian, or Turkic mythology, something the Soviets would have been interested in digging up on their own soil. That, and it would have been neat seeing Indy traveling around Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, or even Persia/Iran.
@DinosaurFan885 жыл бұрын
He also has a good point about how the Soviets in this film aren't really portrayed as being all that evil (probably so hypocrite George can get more digs in at American society) compared to the Nazis and Thuggees in the previous movies. There's another missed opportunity in depicting the Communists as being pretty monstrous, especially since the brutal suppression of anti-Communist rebellion in Hungary would be pretty recent in KotCS.
@matiasluukkanen77185 жыл бұрын
DinosaurFan88 Though in the 50-70 this movie supposedly takes place mind control was something that both Soviets and Americans wanted no matter what. So artifact that can give them that (Crystal Skull) is thematically appropriate. Also it's difficult to find any monotheistic religious artefact more hallow than the Arc of the Covenant.

The stuff with the FBI guys makes me realize this movie could have been so much better if Indy spent the movie trying to keep both them AND the Soviets from getting the skull - it would reinforce the idea that the skull is actually dangerous, it would make Max's constant betrayals make a bit more sense, and it would actually pay off all the McCarthy stuff from earlier in the movie.
@gibberconfirm1669 жыл бұрын
My main memory of "Crystal Skull" is wanting to walk out on the ending sequence, like the story had utterly failed in every single way--even basic curiosity to see how Indy ends up. The girl who punches Mutt Williams (Shia LeBeouf) in the diner scene is Sasha Spielberg, daughter of director Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw (Willie Scott from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)). Cate Blanchett and Harrison Ford had never met before this movie. The first time they were introduced was on the first day of filming, where Indiana and Spalko first meet. Blanchett said it was ideal to be introduced to him dressed as Indiana Jones, because she'd always been a big fan of the character. This is the first Indiana Jones movie without Pat Roach, who had a role in the first three movies. Roach died in 2004. The character Mutt Williams is named after composer John Williams This is the only movie in the franchise in which Indy does not fire his pistol. This is the only Indiana Jones movie not to receive any Oscar nominations. The only movie directed by Steven Spielberg to win a Razzie Award (Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.) Though others have been nominated Steven Spielberg cast Russian actors in the roles of Russian soldiers, so their accents would be authentic.

1:00:28 this represents the saddest part of an older artist. They lose the edge they had when they were younger. Sharp edges get rounded off with age and responsibilities. Raiders was an adult movie that still appealed to the whole family. It was a modern violent complex thrilling adventure that didn’t patronize the audience. Skulls and now Dial of Destiny are kid movies.
@steveharvey2102 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. That does leave me with a question. Do RLM & Mr. Plinkett now fit in to that category? Have they lost their edge and are now more careful about what they say? I've been a fan since the begining and have seen all of the "Best of the Worst" ,"Nerd Crew" and "Mr. Plinkett reviews many times. The only content of theirs, that I have not viewed multiple times is "Half in the bag" and that's only because of the potential spoilers. So to make a long paragraph short, (too late) I know their content well and would count them, as the Best of the Movie reviewers online. Overall Mst3k is the best but what they do, is different enough to fall in to a slightly different category. "What the fuck was I talking about?" Oh yeah. Has RLM lost it's edge? I find them to be as entertaining, as they were 5 years ago but I do think there are small signs, here and there, of a softening of the style and a reduction of the angst, they once had. Nothing that would lead me to stop watching but age does have an effect, on all of us, eventually. What do you think Sir? Feel free to let me know, ya Hack Fraud ;)
@CarlosFontes11 ай бұрын
Interesting you mention this. I'm 37 and like many folks age, I was obsessed with Jurassic Park. Watching it now, it's an action thriller for adults that happens to appeal to kids. The newer installments are more family friendly. I enjoy the hell out of them but I can feel the slight adjustment in tone towards more family friendly fare.

@@steveharvey2102 RLM is also a business, and they need to keep an eye on what they say, to continue getting monetized. It's the same with these millionaire/billionaire directors. RLM are older and more mature as well, which means they don't think it's cutting edge humor to offend as much. With life experience comes empathy. I personally still love them, and I also very much enjoy when it's just 2 RLM dudes talking at length in their black void, about whatever they love or dislike. It's so fun.

Funny story. Way back when this movie was released I was in college and my friends and I were disappointed. The alien as you mentioned was a big reason. So over pizza and beer we sat down and wrote up an outline for our version of the movie. It keeps the title, it involves alien artifacts, and it involves Mutt. But so much else is different including not actually seeing an alien. It was actually a fun story that maybe would have worked.

The film should have been set in Romania and played some kind of Slavic Goth theme. The Soviet Union was very mysterious back in the 50s. There was so many rumours and there is a wash of history and mythology in Eastern Europe. I actually like the idea of the Russians trying to get mind control, there was a big fear back at that time that had the CIA do LSD experiments and stuff. That would have made a great theme if done right. Almost like Stranger Things.
@davidwuhrer67045 жыл бұрын
"The Russians could already have done it" was literally how the CIA convinced the government into letting them abduct and torture random people on the flimsy promise of mind control, extra-sensory perception espionage, and split-personality double agents. @Jet7Wave8 жыл бұрын
Mau Jo Eh, I wouldn't call it fair. I didn't watch his reviews for the other two but the first one was mostly nitpicking if even that. If you were to go into the comment section to tell your opinion on the review, you'd be promptly put in place for thinking the Nostalgia Critic is a professional. Apparently, the "critic" in his name is just for show. He's a comedy guy first and is so on the expense of actual worthwhile criticism. I dunno, his reviews suddenly just felt like a waste of time after that. Not even the jokes make it worthwhile when they're so forced and based on things from the movie that more often than not weren't flaws in the first place. I'd absolutely love to see Plinkett review The Matrix though. He's got that thorough structure to his reviews where things are made clear and obvious to the point where it can get outright hilarious. And hopefully he'd focus on the things that actually matter, instead of rooting around for things to make fun of just to fill his review with something.
@maujo20098 жыл бұрын
***** Hey, it's my opinion. You don't consider it a fair review? That's your opinion. I'm sure Plinkett would do a dissection similar to that he's done before to the _Star Wars_ and _Star Trek_ series, which seemingly we both would enjoy, but I believe NC has his own way to present his critique mixed up with a lot of comedy, which is equally valuable and, more important, enjoyable. Plinkett, on the other side, focuses more in the cinematographic aspects and the technicalities of filming. That's cool too. For me, it's the variety of approaches what makes it fun.

22:06 - and @48:25 This is a great point about how "Crystal Skull" can't make up its mind about its villains. The movie's opening kicks off with the now-obligatory anti-McCarthyist riffs; and yet the main plot depends on the Soviets being genuine bad guys. The first three Indiana Jones installments never suffered from this kind of confusion, in part presumably because there's no current respectable political sympathy for Indian death cults or Nazis.

It just does not feel like a true Indiana Jones movie, but like a knockoff. And I am still sooo pissed that they did not go with the story and visual style of the Fate of Atlantis adventure game. It would have been a million times better, and this game had by far the best visual style for Atlantis I've ever seen. It did have aliens, but only very subtly, and it is only implied that aliens visited Earth in the distant past (we never see any). Also, Atlantis would have been the logical next step for Indiana Jones. I mean, an adventurer archaeologist who found the holy grail, and Atlantis is never even mentioned?

The weirdest part of this whole movie is the look of the picture. They shot on real film but then had what appears to be an 11 year old girl using photoshop do the color timing and color correction.
