I’m not surprised critics liked The Assistant- they’re suckers for TV or movies that have little to no entertainment value but exist seemingly to say something about the current moment. Trust me, I had to suffer through the second and third seasons of Insecure. I swear no one liked that shit besides critics.

Improv sure does suck outside the context of doing improv for the sake of doing improv. For example, Whose Line is it Anyway is pretty funny and entertaining, but Ghostbusters 2016 fucking sucks. Most of 2016 Ghostbusters appears to be improvised when the hack director (he plays Tim in Heavyweights!) told the cast to "be funny! say funny stuff!" in lieu of writing a tight script with constructed gags and jokes.

The movie would have worked a lot better if the entire movie had that kind of tone. That kind of old school dry darker sense of humor. Instead of being just gross out humor, making light of sexual assault etc. Basically if it was directed and produced by anybody except the guys at Happy Maddison. It's one of the few HM films that actually has a good premise for comedy just it's all just pushed so far as to be completely unfunny bar a couple of good jokes.

@@jaredarmstrong992 Woody Allen raped his adopted daughter when she was a toddler several decades ago. The prosecution ultimately did not press forward because of how brutal the legal process was on all involved - if you think that sounds like a cop-out, imagine trying to get a four year old to hold under cross examination after telling an entire room full of people for the God-Knows-How-Manyth Time about what Daddy promised her in exchange for not telling anyone that he put himself inside of her - but between the prosecution taking the Incredibly Unorthodox step of coming out and saying that they were confident they could press ahead and achieve a conviction with the evidence available and the ruling of the judge from the related custody case (which is probably the single most scathing legal opinion I have ever seen written by any professional anywhere and goes on for pages about all the things that were and are not in contention - i.e. other than her rape - that made up exactly why it was definitely necessary to keep her away from him for her own safety), I'm very comfortable asserting that it happened. No one with any sense has spent the time necessary to get a decent overview of the legal facts established at the time and left less than convinced about what happened that day. Generally, most of the public remembers the controversy being him fucking his his *other* adopted daughter - this one technically of age, though not when it started - and marrying her around the same time. Admittedly, he *also* did this, and it's also monstrous in its own way, but the reason people remember it like this is because he made it so. This is because he has put his considerable resources into spinning things this way, making it a 'controversy' about him doing something extremely creepy but not criminal and his ex-wife's bitter rage over it. But that's not it, and never was, and any actor that insists that's what they believed is either lying or chose to 'believe' that deliberately, because none of this is new. This was public knowledge before I was born, and consequently every artist that has made a film with him during my lifetime has definitely been aware of all of this and completely disregarded it for the sake of their own careers. They chose to work with a child-rapist and enable the suppression of his victim's story. The only reason this is a bigger deal today than it would have been five years ago is just that Dylan (the toddler he penetrated) has had a lot more access to public outlets to write about what her father did to her in the last few years - and if her platform expanded when people started allowing her to publish things a few years ago, it went supernova when her brother Ronan won that Pulitzer for exposing another rich hollywood institution as a rapist. Scarlett Johansson went beyond the general collaborationist "I don't really know about any of that stuff, I never looked into anything like that' party line of the bloc of actors and actresses that have chosen to trade their morals for awards with Allen, and genuinely does deserve some very real backlash for it. He's one of the worst people in Hollywood. Maybe just one of the worst people, period. I fully expect some nightmarish tell-alls from his daughters by Soon-Yin, or maybe even Soon-Yin herself, to come to light after he's dead.

Have seen Nick Swardson recently and in person at the restaurant where I (used to, hopefully will soon again) work. From what I understand, he's sober now, so my guess is any weight gain you see is a result of him not drinking or doing drugs anymore. Some people gain weight when they stop using drugs/abusing alcohol because their bodies crave a replacement for the sugar they were getting from drinking. So it might be less coke bloat and more Coke™ Bloat. Also, for what it's worth, he's always been really polite when I've served him.

I remember seeing Elephant when I was like 14-15 on TV and I was not really at the age where I could deal with slow movies but somehow I was incredibly engaged the entire time watching Elephant. The memory and feeling of watching that movie has stuck with me for well over a decade, it was really remarkable to me how it made me stop, sit and watch it unfold so slowly. Lost In Translation while a slightly different sort of movie also kept me engaged in a similar manner. So I always wondered growing up "Does that make Elephant a good movie, that it was able to have that effect?" I saw it with no real context for what it was going to be about or any expectations and I'd never heard anyone talk about it until Mike mentioned it just now in the video. I might have to check out The Assistant.

I hated Elephant when I first watched it as a teenager, then started to like it much more with further viewings. Same happened with Last Days. Gerry I always was mesmerized by though. I'm going to use your comment to point out that I enjoy this show mostly because of Mike and Jay's humor, demeanor and inventiveness, and despite the fact that the range of their taste and reviews is quite limited: there is a lot of pop culture and almost no arthouse stuff at all. So that's why it's always exciting for me (and almost 'sweet', because of how fond of them I am by now) to see them mention movies as avant-garde, radical and bizarre as those Gus Van Sant films. I can barely picture Mike watching something like Gerry, so it's nice to think that it could actually happen.

Man, as a big fan of Lapkus from the podcast circuit, it was hard to even watch the trailer for that movie. She is a genuinely hilarious person in the right context - but the whole film feels so over-wrought, like Spade/Happy Madison/whoever was in charge were just like: 'no, we want it to be CRAZIER, like really AMP IT UP - no no like OVERDO it MORE' But who the hell is the up and coming actor - who somehow gets the paycheck and opportunity to be the lead in a Big Netflix Movie - who is going to sidle up to the fucking Happy Madison guys of all people and be like: "Hey this character is a bit too wacky and unlikable, what if I go for a more understated vibe?" *a foreign grandma falls out of her wheelchair and does a fart*

A bunch of 'Lost' actors took up residence in Hawaii, so I'm guessing the Jorge Garcia was about availability more than anything. The production was probably after the series finale for Hawaii 5-0 wrapped, so he was at loose ends and probably has some friends somewhere in the Happy Madison extended family.

I feel sympathy for the "director" of this movie. There is absolutely no way this person has any control over what is going on. These millionaire actors are there to give it their least and collect a paycheck. The camera department is there to construct scenes in the most economical way possible and go home. This movie wouldn't look any different no matter who is in the director's chair.

im a big fan of L.L..... her episode of The Characters on nf is pretty great. the 13 year old kid who directed the Wrong Missy just kept on going "go bigger! go wackier!" over and over and over probably. its a horrible script too but that goes without saying. its very close to the ben stiller bomb The Heartbreak Kid.... whole movie takes place at a hotel... ben stiller keeps on trying to duck an annoying girl to go be with another girl.

It's perfectly fine to give people who seem decent and hard working a pass when something they do whiffs. We aren't perfect and it's not like most ppl in Hollywood have the option to turn down roles and make creative demands on set. If you want to be positive about it, Sandler seems to prefer to cast people who are easy to get along with and he uses the budget to basically give good people a vacation. So even if the movie is bad, everyone got paid and hopefully got to spend an extra week in Hawaii. That's the best I can do for making you feel good.

I went to a local improv show last year, I also didn’t laugh once. Alternatively I recently watched the Middleditch & Schwartz improv special on Netflix and found myself laughing hysterically, but as I skimmed through my favorite bits I realized I wasn’t laughing at the scenarios and goofs they were making up, I was laughing at them breaking character and questioning each others’ logic of the choices they made, it was like watching a blooper reel. So I guess for me it depends on the performers and their chemistry 🤷🏻‍♂️
